Reuisiove.—The churches yesterday, notwith- standing the threatening ~ * aguas of the Weather. were well attended. regular pastors of the Methodist E; and Methodist Pro- Yestant Churches being absent at their respective ‘Conferences w in their annual session, their ‘pulpits were filled by ministers of sister churches and by the local clergy. Waugh Chapel —Rev. Father Taylor, of Boston, preached from Luke 1323. Men were [acoder avoid the truth when the question was aught home to their consciences, ‘' Will you accept sal- vation?" by equivocation and skepticism. They ‘would endeavor to pick flaws in the Word of God, and by ingenious questions seek to divert the Tea gems from themselves. Although God had said man should be saved, yet he bad pro- vided no way whereby his salvation could be se- cured without the ition of man himself. He wasa free moral agent. with life and death tet before him. If hecomplied with the terms of salvation, he secured the former; if he neglected them, be must inevitably meet the latter. The way of salvation was plain and simple. Let him forsake his evil ways, and turn unto the Lord with sincere repentance, and he would be taken into the fold of God. No man need have any doubt sto his position before God. He cannot serve God and the Devil. If he is striving to walk in the way of the Lord, be will feel in his own heart the change that has been wrought in his de- sires and inclinations, and will not be in doubt with regard to bis acceptance before God. If mon in sn unrighteous condition felt himself guilty and liable to punishment, wby should not he who ad complied with tbe command of his ileavenly nding feeling of safety and bis work well, never feared Father have a corres repose? He who di to meet his master. Grace Church —The Rector, Rev. Mr. Holmead, delivered an excellent discourse appropriate to the times, from 24 Thessalonians, 3:16. Thetext, Now the Lord of peace himself give you peace always by all means,"’ indicated the paramount importanc tached by the Apostle to the attain- mtof peace. The preacher proceeded in the ¢ connection to treat upon the desirableness te and in the chure pig oe e peace was not with us at aH times; and any set- tlement of existing difficulties not founded upon christian love and kindness would be of no value or permanence. Wesley Chapel._—The service was conducted by Rev. Mr. Hill, who preached in the morning from the text of Job, 9.30to31. The prencher dwelt with considerable force upon the impuri- ties of human nature, and the insufficiency of man’s efforts for his own purification. Christ's power alone is efficacious In the cleansing of our pature. St. Patrick's Day esterday, the anniver- sary of the birth of St. Patrick, Ireland tron Saint, passed off quietly and pleassntly in our city. Atan early hour onr streets were thronged with worshippers, repairing to the various Cath- olic churches to engage in the religious exercises of the day, while an unusually large number of visitors were attracted by the interesting cere- monies. The churches were, of course, densely packed, and numbers were obliged to go away without an opportunity of witnessing the exer- cises. St. Patrick's church was crowded to its utmost capacity, many being compelled to stand about the doors and passayes. Father Maguire hed from Ecclesiastes 44: 1,15 It is natural for man to reverence the name of those who have in the past been benefactors of our race; but at the same time man was too prone to pay homage to those who bad recured there benefits by meana of war and bloodshe." t. Patrick had wrought out for Ireland more han any other man or class of men fils privatious, bis self-denial, and his virtues ‘were equalled by po man, and from his life could be learned lessons = -meekness, of patience, and holiness. Hisca; ‘te and bondage when young, wasonly one ofth _ysterious ways of providence. which, though grevivus in affliction, yet it worked out.for him and for ireland a great and eternal weight of glor He bad left to Ireland a bright and glorious faith, and while many of her sons and daughters were poor in the things of the world, yet they could leave theirchildrena legacy which would make them rich for time and eter- nity. Rumorep Insurrection.—The Grand Jurors of Montgomery county, with most commendable prudence and zeal, thoroughly investigated the report in regard to a negro insurrection near this place on Tuesday night of last week. and we are leased to learn from a report which they made to he Court, that there was no foundation for the rumor. A fire was discovered in a secluded place, and the eppearance of the ground showed that there had nm an assemblage of persons around it; what their object or purpose is not certaini: known, perhaps it wasa social gathering, an maton a negro frolic, with a jug of whisky.
