Punctual attendaece required. “* By order of the President,” &e , &o. It is needless to inform our readers how our knight of the pencil, fortified with the antict- pation of enjoying a ‘meetin’ what isa metin’,”’ stalked forth upon his errand thtough dismal streets and across mote gloomy tommons, now stumbling in the ‘ness over misplaced curb- stones, and then plunging Into treacherous man- traps, with an occasional ‘‘drap”’ into some of the man} Uk aga which abound in that neighbor- rome jw, upon reaching the Hall, he {nnocentl) broke in upon the enjoyment of a harmless *‘mil- ingtary kumpiny,”’ one of whose members was energetically giving Jessee to certain streaks of repobtioen doctrine—how, after knocking off a section of his boot-toe against a scraper in the third story, he finally reached the council chamber of the organization The room contained four desks, two gas burners atone end, anda couple at the other, a row of ancient ‘‘ onsartin’ ” seats, a president, secretary, twenty-nine thy as and he of the Star. zhe President having calied the Meeting to order, Mr. Henshaw Wanted to explain why be had not formed the duties im upon him at the Inst meeting » -orresponding secretary. He didn’t understane : tly what these duties were, and he wanted a little {nformation on the subject. The Secretary —Why! it was about the ar- rangement of the Executive committee. Mr. Henshaw —Ob! yes, that’s it, eh! I did attend to that. Well, I suppose its not out of order to make a report of the proceedings of that committee President —No, sir. Mr. Henshaw —Well, we had a meeting at the Avenue House, and a resolution was offered by one of the executive committee to nominate can- didates fer offices, from the Marshal of the District to the Warden of the Penitentiary. Some of the committee had committed themselves upon their nominations, and had stated that they bad par- ticular friends whose claims they should urge 28 candidates for the fat offices, and he felt that it ‘Was no more than just that the other associations shouid have something to say about it. But the had choked off every attempt to increase their number. and he hed concluded to let them alone. Mr. Willet said he wasn’t a member of that association, but belonged to the parent associa- tion He didn’t know whether he had any right there or not If he wasn'ta member, he would like to become one. The President informed sir. Willet that there ‘was no question as to bis right tocome in to their meeting The y question was as to his joining. Mr Hensh sw proposed that Mr. Willet should be forthwith made a member. And it was done Mr. Bateman —Mr President, I should like to know if this is a republican association? Itseems to my mind that it ain't. I think ifa man signs our constitution and pays bis initiation fee he be- comes 3 republican, and eligible to # voice in the parent association. Mr. Henshaw explained that a person could not be eligible to an office in the parent association unless he was a member of it. Mr. Batewan —Well, if the parent association thinks that a member of this association ain’ta republican what's the use of paying fees? ‘be President —That’s not it [Mr. Henshaw— “Oh! no-o.’}] He must belong to the parent asso- ciation to be a member of the executive com- mittee Mr. Bateman subsided. A cordial invivation was then extended to de- linquents to pay up; and while the members were eagerly listening to the heavenly music of *‘chin- capin’ money— Mr Bateman gave expression to his desires not to be misunderstood in the matter, and to know if a man who joined there wasn’t a republican;— if it dida’t make a republican of him, what was the use of paying fees and fooling away his money? The President requested Mr. Henshaw to take the chair, as he had business which called him away. Mr. Henshaw shut bis eyes, ‘grit’? his teeth, and with the air of a martyr ascended the plat- form. He said: “1 believe the President basa tight to put anybody in the chair he has a mind to; so I suppose there won't anybody object. If anybody wants to pay dues here’s « good oppor- tunity, as there is no other business ** Here the Secretary remarked to the Chair that this was very dry business; to which that digni- tary respond-d, ‘very dry.”” But we were of the opinion that, from the way tobacco juice rainod down upon the floor, a life preserver would soon hecome Indispensable After some further time spent in chewing and spitting, somebody moved that the Chair make a Speech. The Chair seemed rather indifferent to enterin upon the performance of such a feat, but would give a song if they wanted it. A Voice —Anything to keep us awake. The Chair —f supposed that there was to be something of importance to be laid before the meeting upon reading, the notice, but 2s such is not the cese, I will entertain with great pleasure & motion to adjourn Mr. Littie wanted to know a little more about those fees, whether in order to become a repnbli- can they should pay them to that association or to the present association. The Chair being apparently somewhat drowsy didn’t understand Mr. Little stated his case again, but the Chair couldn’t decide The ‘‘meetin"’ then adjourned.
