[coxcuupED.] The wretchedness of the family at this alarm- jing and unexpected visitation was extreme. My son immediately communicated with me, and we allconsulted together. Henrique de- termined nevor to join a band who disgraced both their country and humanity, and, if the opposite party had come up, I verily belie ‘ue would have taken refuge i their ranks and Secome a soldier; fortunately, as we considered, they turned off to intercept the fugitives by a near cut, and we saw them no more. We knew Matamoras was in the ion of the pa: to which the ruffian belonged, but it was the first time they had ventured in our neighbor- hood. We finally agreed, all except Henrique, thatit would be better for him to leave the country for awhile. He strongly opposed it, until Maria, with tears in her eyes, besought = for her sake, to go out of the reach of soon arranged the route he was to take. Thad a friend I-ving at San Antonio, in Texas, to whom I him ak and that night he crossed the Rio Grande was on his road. The young ones pledged their truth till death, with promises of as frequent communication as ible, while I was to write to our friend the op, then at Monterey, and endeavor to ve the affair arranged se that Henrique might return to his home. Alas! man pro- poses, but God disposes. Several days passed, and nothing was heard from the officer, though eeveral parties of his faction, as well as of the opposing one, were heard of in the neighbor- hi A troop of the other party, which was recopnoitering, halted at my house. I knew the commander, id, relating the circu stances to him, idvised me to visit Mata- moras under a flag of truce, which was to be sent in, and see the chief in person, with whom I might be able to make some arrangement offering to one placed under the protection of the flag. I gladly accepted the opportunity; but, alas, instead of listening to my remon- strances, he threw me in prison, refusing to recognize my rights under the flag of truce. “In the meantime, the raffanly butcher, for such was and is his reputation, had heard, it seems, from his subordinate, extravagant socounts of Maria’s beauty, and determined to have her as well as Henrique seized, for of course I had said nothing about the Iatter’s flight. I learned afterwards that negotiations hed been arranged under the flag of truce for s evacuation of Matamoras in twe days, during which there was to be a suspension of hostilities “That night, as my son’s family were sit- ting up later than usual, expecting my return, the clatter of horses’ feet was heard. My son started up, and ran tothe door. He saw, by the moonlight, half a dozen lancers, whose equipments he knew. He immediately closed the door, and, seizing a loaded pistol, placed it in bis m. Maria and her mother sat pale and trembling. The lancers halted at the door, and in a few moments three of them rus in, headed by the brutal officer him- eelf. “Where is a recruit, Henrique Valdes? Produce him instantly !”’ exclaimed Captain Mendez “He is not bere,” said my son, calmly. “* Where is he, I say?’’ demanded the ruf- fian ** He has gone to San Antonio on business,”’ answered his uncle. * Hell and fury seize him !”’ exclaimed the Officer. ‘ Well, I am beund to take a hostage for his appearance; so, comrades, do your duty —carry that girl along, and mount her on the spare horse we brought for the recruit; we must hurry back.’’ “Take my daughter! Never!’’ shouted my eon, placing himself in front of her, and grasp- ing his pistol. “Ob, spare my child! ther, cla: in her arms. ‘-You shall not! you shall take me first !”’ ** Dare you resist us, villain ?”’ said the lead- er of the party, furiously; ‘‘ stand asi: orl will cut you to pieces. Take the girl away, I exclaimed the mo- prs: My m instantly drew his pistol and called out The first who touches my obild shall perish ' The leader ai: blow at him with his sword, which, striking the pistol, glanced off; but, alas! fell fatally on his defenceless wife, whose blood gushed over her daughter, as they both fell together, the one in a fainting fit, and the other 1 death!” The ald man paused a few moments, over- come by his emotions, then he resumed : Well, even the bloodhounds were for a mo- ‘ment arrested at the sight of that terrible deed, ‘and wy son started back horror-stricken, fixed his g ring ment on the beloved of ‘bis heart of madness, he seized a knife from the table, and a terrific conflict ensued. Maria remained senseless amidst the tumuit, and was spared the sight of whatoccurred. How long she con- tinued in that condition she could not teil; but when she awoke she was at my house, lying on a bed, and an elderly military man was lean- ing over her. 5 : is it with you, my good girl ?”’ asked a kind and feeling voice. = My father and mother !’’ was all she could presently; = yourself—we are friends,”’ said yz “General, [ think she is safe,” said another and younger officer, who was surgeon. +‘And the other?” asked he, iz a low voice. * May last twenty-four hours.”’ Well. I will leave a sufficient guard with Jou, for I must be off to Matamoras. Let them want for nothing, for her uncles were brave soldiers, and fought by my side.” “It was on the third day that my prison ‘doors were opened had are of the ¢| Again the old man's head some minutes before he raised it he did so, there was record of aa feeling man never likes to ai to him the sad news, Wienen onan ooreion of the affair, it ap; ed that wehed all been murdered. My friend Jast I had an immediate, our raised the yoiase ns « of ‘wore preparing to tear her org of their enlistment, and a well-drilled and gal- lant body of men, inured to the climate, who had proved their eagerness to vindicate the honor of their country by the promptness with which they left their avocations and rushed at the first call to the field, were deprived of op- rtuaities which they so well deserved. Many, jowever, determined to remain and see # little fun on theirown account. Some of these joined the gallant Texas rangers. It was during the siege of Monterey that several companies of rangers were e: ed in & severe conflict with a splendid regiment of lancers in a cornfield. For a time the rangers were worsted. The leader of the Mexicans en- countered a ri r whose carbine was dis- charged, and whose only effective weapon was a revolver with but a single charge left; there was no time to reload, for the lancer was = him; taking the best aim he could, he dis- charged it, as he intended. full in the Mexi- can’s face, an instant before the encuonter; but, with the splendid horsemanship of his countrymen, the other had thrown himself out of the saddle on one side, avoiding the shot, while the ranger’s horse, rearing, received the lance full in his chest. and went down bearing hig rider to the earth. Abandoning his lance, the Mexican drew his sabre, and in another minute, before the fallen man could have risen he would have-finished him; but another form interposed between them. It was that of a youthful horseman of powerful frame and fisshing eye, who waved a bloody sabre in his ht hand, and carried a large revolverin the left, while hi: charger seemed to obey the volition of his rider. Ha! Juan Mendez! we meet at last,’ he shouted, as he intercepted the impending sword of the Mexican with his own. At the saroe moment bis steed, as if trained, caught the lancer by the arm, and slung him from the saddle as a terrier would arat. The youthful warrior was on his feet, and at his side in a minute. Placing his foot on his breast, and hissing ‘some bitter reproach over the fallen man, he drove his weapon again into his breast. All this time his horse stood by calmly and quietly. His work finished, he approached the ranger, who had risen to his feet, and ten- dored his thanks. «You owe none, senor,” he replied in a tone altogether different from that with which he thundered defiance into the ears of his foe; **but if yon will mount that villain’s horse, which seems waiting for you, I will guide you to our men, who are following the retreating enemy.”’ * But may I not know to whom I am indebt- ed?"’ I asked, as I took advantage of his sug- gestion. * He ue Valdez,’ was the reply which stunned me. Need I tell the sequel? How I rendered Henrique the happiert man in the army, in return for saving myflife, at the same time he had rid himself of a toe, that night by the fires of the bivouac? Or how, some weeks later, after an armistice had followed the capture of Monterey, I accompanied him to his old home, and acted as his groomseman? Reader, are not these conclusions the legitimate property of your imagination? Ah! while gazing on the soft radiance of her lovely face, as she stood before the altar with her lover, how truthful did I find her name, Maria de Guadaloupe! — Can We MAKE REAL Diamonps?—All the world knows that nineteenth century alchem- ists, ever since the date of the discovery that the diamond is composed of pure, crystalized, colorless carbon, have been trying to transform carbon into acrystalized and colorless condi- tion, that is, to turn gas into diamonds. Many a time the announcement has been made of the success of some enthusiastic operator in this direction, but results have always given the lie tothe announcement. Dr. Stockhardt, of Leip- ig, and Mesars. dela Tour and Despretz, of France, all thought they had made i tion on carbonic acid h were mistaken. We 850, of soine galvanic n chem small as to require a microscope them. But the French papers which have just reached us contain one more announcement of thesame kind; and, if any ekepticism had been engendered by the past failures, there would really be hope for believing that the long sought art of making diamonds had, at last, been discovered. According to these French reports, published by M. Rossi, of Toulon, orystals, twenty in number, having all the roperties of diamonds, were made by Professor Bannal. They were obtained by tho action of phosphorus, water and bi-sulphide of carbon upon each other for the space of fifteen weeks. The crystals made were found to be so hard that no file would act upon them; they cut giass like ordinary di ds, and scratched ; in brilliane: id trans) rency they were in no way inferior to the best jewels, aud some few possessed a lustre surpas- sing that of moat stones. Last—not least—the sabstance 80 produced was erystalized in do- decahedra, (that is, having twelve equal sides,) the crystaline form characteristic of the real diamond. Ic fact, if all that M. Rossi asserts should prove true, there is little doubt that Professor Gannel has already succeeded in making diamonds. If he Aas done so, the reve- nues of Golconda and Brazil must suffer an in- calculable decrease, and a large number of millionaire diamond houses of the great capi- tals of the world will inevitably subside into bankrupte A certain ent to another king, saying : blue pig with a black tail or The other in high dudgeon at the presumed insult, replied : “ T have not got one, and if I had”—— On which weighty cause they went to war for many “aggre = a! a satiety of fea en and miseries, the; ly bethought m that, as their Gemiat anh Fesources were exhausted, and their kingdoms mutually laid waste, it it be well enough to a ni ; but before this be concluded, a diplomatic explanation was first needed of the insulting language which had formed the ground of the quarrel. “What could you mean,”’ asked the second king of the first, ‘* by saying, ‘Send mea blue pig with a black tail, or else?’ »— “« Why,”’ said the other, ‘-I meant a blue with a black tail, or else some other color.
