The lecturer prefaced his lecture with & few remarks relative to thespbere and influence of women in early times. Those who adorned the European capitals in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were distingu’ for their tact, wit, corer ipeh aoe and attainments. ‘They were sought ai Princes and nobles, and their names have been ered in later bg Modern times had seen a new development in the history of woman. They had become writers and authors, and bad come to be respected for their intellect and talent. Female authors had become aclese in communities, and claimed an equality in the ronk of mind with those who asserted to be her master. She had shown her ability to co ‘with man jn intellect; and as novelist, critic or historian, she had borne off ber share of prizes ard distinction in the world of literature. But no truly immortal female writer arose until Mad- ame DeStael astonished the circles of wit and wenlus with her brilliant productions. Her father, however, gave her a splendid education, and at an early age intro- duced ber into socie hen she soon made her power felt. At fifteen she wrote a work that ex- cited much attention, but health finally gave way uoder her arduous mental jabors, and she wus compelled to suspend her writing for a season It was no doubt best for ber that she was com- Ppelled to do so, as it removed her from the re- Straints of a rigid system toa life of poetry and mental freedom he was twenty she wrote poetry; but % impatient under the trammels of French, she abandoned it for prose. She was not techni- cally beautiful, bat there was an attractiveness ce that was irresistible, while her ntranced the listener. Highly educated, talented, accom- ished and fascinating, as well as the richest ress in the kingdom, sbe was eagerly sougbt after by the great men ‘of the times, and hearts end fortunes were offered at ber shrine. In 1736, when at the age of twenty, she married Baron Holstein, and presented him with a dowry of 2.6 0,000 francs. Their married life was neither iniserable nor h«ppy. They finally separated outa divorce, but she returned to him aud parsed him in his last illness. At her country seat. near Geneva, she wrote her first work of dis- ‘tin In . upon the very day that Napoleon, as first consul, seized upon the Government, she re- turned from ber exile in Switzerland ana came to Paris that she might pay her tribute of homage to his genius. But when she saw him, she turned from bim with aversion and dislike. While she felt awed before the gleam of his cold gray eye, yet she saw in him, as by intuitien, the destroyer of her happiness and the liberties of France.
