Its total gatly circulation is more than déuble that of any other Daily printed in the District of Co- lumbia. . Lord lectured at the last night on Bacon and Phileso} ‘The lecturer denounced as unjost the wor: ft xerei in which Bacon had been handed down as ie ‘“@ isest, brightest, meanest of mankind,” together with the descriptions of Lords Macaulay “and Campbell, which reptesent him as being the Judus Iscariot of the seventeenth century. Bacon ,""vas eminent as a lawyer, statesman, and pkiloso- phet, and until bis ignoble fall there was nothing to im b his honor or integrity. We received the Itveliest impression of his character when be ‘Wes but a youth atthe Court of Elizabeth. He was “noted, as & courtier, for bis wit, politeness, and Jove of truth, and,in after years, when he occupied high positions in the government, whenever bis opinion was asked concerning any state policy, he ‘would Invariably advocate the side of truth, even though It was in ditect opposition to the wishes of the Queen. At the age of ten he forsook the ga of the palace to study the causes of a celebrated echo in the Meteo § At thirteen he was sent to Cam- bridge, and at sixteen was so disgusted with its pedantry and learned dullness, that he left it and ik up alone the task of of knowledge. At nineteen he was found among the philosophers and learned men of the day, a Youthfal competitor for the prize of distinction. He studied law at Lincoln’s inn, and mastered every legal technicality, (objects which he alway hated.) and at the same time was deeply versed in Prose and poetry. He was made Queen’s Coun- eellor at an early age, and when forty-seven was elected Chancellor, from which he soon became Lord High Chancellor His corruption as judge was no greater than that of bis cotemporaries, but bis adversery, Coke, through envy and vindictiveness, blasted bis re} utation ther Bacon or Buckingham had fall, and King James was mean enough to sacri- fice the Chancellor to save his favorite. His bribery was no greater than that of his associates, and it was no wonder that he fell in with the stoms of the age, practices no worse then those fathers who give out contracts to scoundrel tends. The lecturer defended Bacon from the assaults ‘Ybat bad been made upon his integrity and private ‘character, and considered the attacks of bis co- ‘temporaries and bistorian as being the result of malice and an inability to appreciate the man. le dweit perticularly upon the peculiarities of pollosopby, 2nd considered the progress and improvement of the present time, as being the Gevelopments of those mysteries which his philos- ‘Opby grasped. 2 Guan House —Before Justice Thompson.—J Morphy and Wm. It weighed sighty-one pounds. This occurred yesterday. This morning, Bolden and Pelliar went to George- town and found Jock, and engaged him in co! Yersation till they saw two police constables wear- ing stars. They called these officers to comeand arrest Jock, and the officers refused, saying they were not on duty to-day. So Jock escaped from justice, while the two men were ying to find Some officers who were on duty. ‘Trrater —Perhaps the most brilliant audience of the season was that of last nizht, ma p very largely as it was of ladies, who, by the way, are ‘usually drawn out in force w! the roman’ and affecting play of « The Stranger” is up. Some Tuincs That Miout Bz Dont —Among the numerous complaints of the neglect of the city sto provide for the bealih and comf rt ens, some are certainly without real but there are others based upon facts cannot be denied. Among these are many the eastern section relative to the exposed ition of property to fires by reeson of the want rater supplies at diferent pointe; and from the 1 and northern sections relative to the clean- of the streets. The difficulty of keeping rs open and the crossings clean in such a the present is not small, but it might be and it would give employment to men really suffering. Evitor: Can you inform the public what rogramme js for the military parade on the 2d Fevruary? We think it due to Georgeto ‘that the parade should include that old town its limits, for her military have always joined in rades of her sister city, and there are many sitet cas ‘whic! ani to bea itary '—passing through ber streets, say as far as the College. The time being it which to complete the work, it will be commenced on next Monday morning, and will furnish a short job for some 75 to 100 earpenters. Messrs. These gentlemen thanked the company for the honor conferted, in neat and appropriate addresses, which were loudly applauded. The reason for the reorganization of the company is, that a large namber of persons being desirous of joining company, the officers elected on a previous occa- ¢cesion resigned, so as to afford an opportunity to the new members to vote for officers. A commu- nication was received from Captain Edward C. Carrington, inviting the company to join the Union Regiment; which was declined. This company now numbers seventy odd members, and conlinue to receive accessions nightly. Ata late hour the meeting adjourned, with three cheers for the newly-elected officers, three cheers Fd be — and the Union, and three for en. Scott. A Biericunty oocurred last night in the hall of the National Hotel, between the Hon. Mr. Kel- logg, of Iino’ nd MrgMedill, editorial cor- respondent of the Chicago Tribune, in which the latter received some pretty severe blows about the head and face before the by-standers could inter- pose successfully. The affair. it appears, grew out of what Mr. K. considered personal remarks about him, in the Washington Lees Geapeery of the paper above mentioned, in regard to his late course in the House of Representatives with ref- erence to the national troubles. Last night the two met atthe National, and Mr. Kellogg requested Medill to step aside with him, as he alleges, to remonstrate with him about the matter, an to bring about an understanding. Medill refused to enter into any explanations, and evinced no dispo- sition to accord the interview sought by K., who thereupon administered the blows above noted; and thus the matter ended. Roven Burctars.—Last night, the offices of Messrs. Coyle & Bro. and McLean, lumber mer- chants, Canal street, near Thirteenth, were broken into and the desks ransacked, papers scattered over the floor and papers destroyed. At the Messrs. Coyle’s the entry was made by bursting a panel from the door. A lot of papers were piled upon the desk and saturated with vil, and set fire to, probably for Light. A coat belonging to Mr. A’ ‘oyle, snd another belonging to the foreman, were stolen. The scamps bespattered the wall with Ink. and battered the iron safes to get in, showing that their object was money. Not suc- ceeding, they departed after scrawling their ral- lying cry—“ Ob, you Night Owls!"—in large characters upon the wall. This is the third re- ceat attempt upon this office. At Mr. McLean’s, they entered by forcing the lock, scattered and destroyed his papers, but did no other damage. IxcenptaRy ATTEMPT ast night ahout seven o'clock the stable of Mr. Gardner, on South B st., between New Jersey avenue and First st.,was set on fire A servant girl seeing aman lurking about the premises ad: going out of the yard; called Mr Gardner’s attention to him. Mr. G. supposin it to be some wood thief, ran down in the yard and reached his stable in time to discover the flames bursting out of the door. With the afd of the servant he succeeded in extinguishing the flames. A few minutes later, and the fire would have done considerable damage, as there are sev- eral stables adjoining, all wooden structures, and but 8 poor supply of water in the nelghborhood. Laxp War Money.—The market bas not been exceedingly lively this week, though the indications are still favorable.
