[concLupeD. | The voiee of her son did restore her; and it is needless to ny hee what joy that fond mo- ther welcomed back herlost treasure. It was afull hour before any of them could talk co- hberently; and then Edward, in reply toa le- gion of questions, said, “ led to gamble for one hour once; and as I won, and would ge away, @ young scoundrel of the name of Petrus followed me and pushed me all una- wares over & precipice.”* “Ah, my dear,” said the mother, ‘we know all that.”’ “You do, mother ?’? “Yes, and about the pool—the fathomless pool into which it was thought you sunk.” “Oh, dear no, I did not sink into it, and no- body thought so. I slid down twenty yards along the face of the precipice, and caught = some — in the Le == the rock, a rare good fortune clim a in. ie i ar Petrus left the island that — t, no doubt supposing he had murdered me, but beyond a few scratches I was none the worse.” “ My son—my boy!”’ “God bless you, Edward!” ‘“* Bat who was or who is that person,”’ said Edward, “‘who jumped through the window as I came in?” “Bless us!” exclaimed both Mr. and Mrs. Cattley, at once; “we forgot Pierre'”’ “* Who is Pierre?”’ “Your friend, my dear, who thought you were drowned in the pool—your friend, Pierre St. George. Oh, run out, and see if he is hurt.”’ “Stop!” ssid Edward. “Is he slight and thin? I only saw him on the top of the steps for half a second.” ** He is—he is!” “* Has he a scar on his left brow?” “Oh, yes, yes!” “Ab, then that is Petrus, who would make me play, and then push me over the precipice. Dear father and mother, I see it all now! The villain, thinking me dead, came to you, and by his specious se got you to adopt him. He is stained by a hundred crimes. You have in- deed taken a viper to your bosoms.” The Cattleys were aghast with surprise and fright at the knowledge that they had been actually for so long cherishing the man who had SceoR tm the life of their own son. An eager search was made over the entire neigh- borbood, but no trace of the fugitive could be found; and in the joy of the recovery of their real son, the Cattleys would soon have ceased to think of their adopted one > But Petrus alias Pierre St. George had not done yet with the Cattleys. That he entertained the most deady hatred against Edward Cattley there could be no doubt; and that he would gladly give his own life, if it would enable that hatred to be the destruction of Edward, was evident. Stained by many crimes in the Mauritius, which made his return to those islands certain death, Petrus felt that his only chance was the one which he had so successfully for a time carried out at the Cattleys. That — os by—through the (to him) most unexpected reappearance of Edward—he evidently gave himself up to despair and death; but it will be seen how even in death he hoped to be the fate and the bane of Edward Cattley. About two days after the return of Edward to Mayfield House, there was found, partiall embedded in the lower part of the Rayetic which stood in the meadow we have mentioned = adjoining the garden of the house, a dead iy. The laboring man who first saw it fled with terror to the nearest public house and spread an alarm, so that before the Cattleys knew anything of it, the ten-acre meadow was full of people, and a constable had been sent for, and the body was laid on a hurdle, to be conveyed somewhere, in order that an inquest should be held upon it. Mr. Cattley and his son ran out of the house to the field to see what was the matter, and they both recognized the body. ‘It is Pierre!’’ said Mr. Cattley. “It is Pretrus!’’ said his son. But now we must describe what remarkable ap ances the body presented. n the chest was still thrust a small Indian dagger, which had evidently been the cause of his death, for it had touched the heart. In one hand of the dead man was some hair, which seemed to have been wrenched from the head of some one, during the progress of a mortal struggle. In a pocket-book that was found upon the body, there were several—three in all—ac- knowledgments for mone: jigned Edward Cattley, and amounting in all to the sum of seven thousand pounds. When these circumstances were taken into consideration—at the roadside public house, where the dead en was taken to—by an attorney in the neighborhood, named Watson, who had been at ey with the Cattleys for some time, sbout a real or supposed right of way over the ten-acre meadow, he ran off to the nearest magistrate, and after a consulta- tion, got @ warrant for the arrest of Edward Cattley. At the inquest the next day, the hair that was found clutched in the hand of the dead man was found to be so exactly the color and quality of Edward’s, that no one could doubt it to be other than his. The Indian poniard he admitted was his own. ‘i The acknowledgments for the seven thousand unds, dated from the Mauritius, and found in the pocket-book of the dead man, he de- clared to be forgeries. But after a very long inquiry, Edward was committed on the coroner’s warrant, for willful murder, on the following grounds : That he had, in the pursuit of Petrus, after he, Petrus, had sprung through the window, at his father’s house, come upon him in the ten-acre field, and after a st: le murdered him, and half concealed the body in the hay- stack. The motive of the murder was presumed to lie in the fact that Petrus had the acknowl- edgments for money, no doubt—as the coroner took upon himself to say—tost at play in the Mauritius by Edward Cattley to Petrus, with whom he acknowledged te have had a gaming transaction. Such, then, was the case against Edward Cattley, and when I was retained for the de- fense I had an interview with him. The Government prosecuted, because killing is murder in this country, whether the persen killed be a British subject or not, and wha’ ever may be the character of the slain.indi- vidual, unless some circumstances can be shown which will convert the act into a justifiable homicide. Edward.Cattley’s statement to me was most clearly and distinctly that he never met or saw Potrus after his evasion of him by leaping through the dining-room window. The poinard he avowed was his, but he had not seen it since he came home; and had, on the occasion of his leaving home for the Mauri- tius, left it in his dressing-room, at Mayfield Bi jouse. The bair, he admitted, was wonderfully like his, only that he did not wear his hair so long as to admit of so much being torn from his head in any he The acknowl ents for the money he knew nothing of, as he had never played with Petrus but the once, for the one hour, when he won two hundred pounds. I was quite convinced myself of Edward Cattley’s entire innocence of any part in the death of Petrus, but still there were the facts for the jury. Edward Aad been into his old dressing-room before the pursuit and search for Petrus, and 80 might have possessed him- self of the rd. H ht not be telling the trath gambling matters; bh might have cropped his hair somewhat a! after the murder All these were uncomfortable rappegiions, and by the time the trial of Ed: came on, I felt very upesay on the subject. t F : ir + —Ebenmg. vo, XVII. Star. WASHINGTON. D. C.. THURSDAY. FEBRUARY 14. 1861. never held a brief in acase which I felt de- pended more upon the humor of the jury than this one; and when in Court I saw a small box on the barrister’s table, in which was the hair which the murdered man in his death st les might be supposed to have torn from the head of the murderer, and when the identity of that hair would, I knew, be sworn to by competent sons, with Edward Cattley’s, felt full of fears. And I must confess that I had no means of satii g either Judge or jury, by any reason- able hypothesis on the subject, of the inno- cence of Edward. I felt that there was some mystery in the whole affair, but what it was, puzzled me spoeodingy. It was to come out, though, and it did come out in the most marvellous manner. The Attorney-General conducted the case for the prosecution, I thought, with too much animus Sater the prisoner, and made too much of the ‘death-struggle, in which Provi- dence decreed that the murdered man should e,”” he replied, “Lottie is well, ant. « In want!”’ Jane repeated. “Yes, in want of a mother, and I of a wife, and I have come here to-night to offer myself to little Jane Milford as her Valentine for life, Ee Nitl soeept siks old enough to be her father.” “Why, I am very plain!” she faltered forth; ‘I have just received the most horrid carica- ture you ever saw, in consideration of my claims to extraordinary ugliness.”” “I recollect thinking you plain when I first saw you,” he replied; ‘‘ but now, in my eyes, you are the prettiest of the four. Besides, I do not base my preferences on personal beauty. You are good, gentle, and sweet-toned; and I tove yeu. But about the Valentine—do you comida me particularly ill-looking ?”’ “You, Mr. Lee!” said Jane, innocently; “why, you are handsome ” " We 1, I received a Valentine to-day quite bound,”” and a8 grotesque as pout own, I'll be hold in his dead hand the evidence of the iden- | he unfolded a s! it, revealing a lone widower tity of his murderer.’” shivering over a miserable fire. ‘ But this n fact, this handful of hair was the thing that made all the impression against Edward. And we, who were for the defense, had no- thing to say to the case, but a simple denial of ever seeing or meeting the dead man in the ten-acre field, or anyWhere else, after he had leay through the window at Mayfield House. Everything was going wrong at the trial. The judge looked ominious; the jurg grave. I anticipated a verdict certainly of manslaugh- ter, when I sawa sisty and mysterious bit of paper handed from usher to usher, and finally to the Judge through the hands of his clerk. Then the Judge, after reading it, handed it down to the Attorney General, who then hand- ed it tome The dirty bit of paper contained the follow- ing words, in the following orthography : ** Bil Simms has seed the go will be a heavy- dents cos wy he hisent toe be nabbed for the cendri go. Kes in.cort.’’ This was a most incomprehensible epistle, and I looked at the Judge with a puzzled air. Then the Judge spoke. ee or ag ont has been handed to the Court,” he said, ** which seems to imply that one Bill Simms is in possession of evidence in this case. I can only say, that if such a person comes for- ward, and incurs peril by so doing, I will do my best to hold him harmless.’’ ** Here you are !’" said a voice, and amanin that indescribable costume of half tramp, half gipsy, which is looked upon with so much sus- Picion in suburban districts, made his appear- ance. ‘Here youare! I’m Bill Simms. I'll awakened me to a sense of my desolate condi- tion, and I determined to appeal to you, not- withstanding my fear of your reply, when I considered my thirty-six and your eighteen years. Is thata barrier, dear Jane?” Dear Jane! What a charm lingered all around those two little words! Who had ever pronounced them so sweetly and before? No one, she was positive; and she naively replied: ‘Oh! I should never think of that.” ‘“ What can keep Jane so long?” said Clara, restlessly, “I can’t think for my life what cousin Charles could want.’’ Jane entered the room just as she had spoken these words. “« Where is Cousin Charles?”’ queried Fanny. ‘In the study with papa,’’ was the answer; and, taking a light, Jane aes from the room to be alone with her new happiness. The next morning, wonder, chagrin and dis- appointment could be discovered in the faces oF the three sisters, on hearing their father congratulate Jane on the very eligible match she had made. ‘For,’’ said he, “I have al- ways hoped to see Charles Lee my son-in-law, and, though you are ne beauty, I think he has manifested good sense in his selection.” Jane keeps her caricature. She says she Ieoks at it occasionally, for fear her other Valentine (Charles) should succeed in making her believe herself pretty. CLOTHING, Ke. DENTISTRY. Farewell, world I hate; I shall, perhaps, yet know of vengeance from the grave.’ Arter that, gents all, he gives a sort of a howl and two shrieks, and then all was as still assmoke. Tha 4 No sooner had Bill Simms ceased speaking, than Edward Cattley called out, “I know the mystery of the hair. Lefore I went to the Mauritius I cut off my long hair, and now I recollect my mother took it, and said she would preserve itin a cabinet. The villain Petrus, during his residence in the house, bas got at it. Itis clear to me now.” There was a distinct clapping of hands in the court at this. The Judge looked at the Attorney General, who at once said, “‘The prosecution is aban- doned, ed lord ” Edward Cattley was free, and the body of the suicide was buried where four roads met, not far from old Hendon Church, at midnight. And the strong case that circumstances got up against Edward Cattley afforded another instance of how dangerous it is to jeopardize life and liberty upon an evidences, however ap- ope conclusive, that admits of any possi- le explanation consistent with innocence. ———__- e+e JANE’S VALENTINE.
