[concrupse.} “Ob, you must leave me now,” she said. ‘I see mamma and the children walking on the road. They must not see me talking te till all is settled properly. Good-bye, dear Mr. Vickery, you do not know how happy you have made me,” and ef che tripped, leaving good old Vickery to pursue his homeward way, alternately upbraiding himself with being a confirmed Don Juan without knowing it, and exulting in this present happiness. . He had hardly disappeared, when Miss Ta bitha Buckram, who, as the judicious reader knows perfectly well, is the real owner of «Tae Heant to se Let,” Sees the seven firs, and was about to take the seat that Fanny had just vacated, when a tall figure came bounding round an angle in the path, and ran straight into her arms. It was Jack V. et “ Bless my soul!”’ exclaimed Jack, ou athoustnd pardons. I hope not hurt you. Very clumsy of me, indeed, but I have an appointment, and preg not to keep a lady waiting must plead my excuse for such awkwardness.’’ «« Appointment ?”’ thought Miss Buckram. “‘Then ‘tis he—’tis my ‘Theodore,’’’ (the ery had signed in his let- e the seven fir ieve. This is the little valley—and shere—here am I.”’ “Oh, I see," Jack said to himself, “ Fanny can’t come, and this is the old nurse she spoke or “ Young and handsome,” paces Miss Buck vam, gazing fondly at the wart Ve8per. ~- He seems quite struck, too, with my appear- ance. It’s love at first sight. I feel the soft emotion myself.’’ “* Well, my dear madam,” said Jack, seat- ing himself beside her, ‘as you have taken the trouble to meet me here, I must tell you all my intentions.” Miss Tabitha Buckram bestowed a languish- ing look upon the unconscious Jack ~ I am resolved,” continued he, ‘to endure no more delay and concealment, but to be mar- ried at onc “Ab, the ardor of youth!” sighed the Buck- ram, ‘ E shall, therefore, confide all to my un- cle, and ask his consent to our union; that is, proviied that my sweet darling, my best and truest love !’* “Oh!” exclaimed Miss Tabitha, closing ber eyes, “ this is exstacy!”” “Tell mo, then,” Jack resumed, “dos she consent? Will she let meclaim her at once*’ ‘She will, ehe will,” murmured the deluded spinster, leaning tenderly against J ack’s shoul- der for support. “Then Tm the happiest of men!” exclaimed her companion, jumping up; thereby causing + Miss Buckram to fall meh. ‘Oh, I beg your pardon again he, assisting her to rise. ‘Be com; d, pray; remain bere, please, I’ll be Sock a balf an hour, and tell you the result of my conversa- tion with my uncle.’ Then away ran Jack, as fast as he had come. ‘*He might have touched my cheek with a chaste salute,” thought Miss Tabitha, fondly watching the retreating figure, ‘‘but all in time. Vy, bless my soul, there's that odious old bachelor.’’ “Confound it !’’ eried Mr. Vickery, who. of course, was the new comer, ~‘here’s that prying old maid.” “ Now I tell you what it is, Mise Buckram,”’ he continued aloud, “I’m not going to stand this; I’m not going to be dodged and followed sbout by you. What haveI done? You ain’t & detective officer in disguise. are you?”’ “Follow you!” retorted the Buckram, in- dignantly, ‘‘the man’s out of his senses! and as for your insults, sir, I'd have you know that I am no longer unprotected; my husband’’—— “ Your what?’’ said Mr. Vickery. ‘My intended husband will protect his bride from your coarse insinuations.” ‘- His bride! ha! ha! ha! You will excus: Miss Buckram, but—his bride, ha! ha! ha'’’ “Ab, you may laugh!’ ejaculated Miss B.; “there are some people whom nobody would marry at any price, acd who are naturally spiteful when others enter into the happy state I can make allowances for suck people, Mr. Jeremiah Vicke nd a8 you are so ungentle- manly as to doubt my word, sir, read that i bim bis-own letter.) my intend: epistle, sir, inviting me to meet him he: and we have met. sir, and he has just left me the pompios of men, sir.” Mr Vickery took the letter, still laughing at the idea of theancient Tabitha becoming a bride; but when he meat and saw its con- tents, his lower jaw fell, his knees trembled, and he looked the very image of abject, speechless misery. **Do—do I understand you,’ he gasped out at last, ‘‘that—that you have already seen this devoted individual ?”’ I have, sir!” replied the dameel, ‘and he is now Preparing his friends to receive me.”” = bee ™ thought Mr. Vickery, taking heart, somebody else must be after these dilapidated remises. “I wish you joy, my dear Miss uckram,’’ said he, aloud. “Hl do anythi: for you and your beloved Theodore. Arrains IN CHaRLestox —In compliance with an official request, W. F.Colcock, Esq , Collector for the port of Charleston, has furnished the State Department of South Carolina. with the returna, showing the amount of business done with his office since the e of the Ordinance of Seces- sion—as compared with the receipts for the same period of the preceding year. Ina communica- lion accompanying the statement, Mr. Colcock offered the following explanation; @ No record has ever been kept in the office of our Oustwise Cy pete bo an you ay official information on this head. ‘That in- Tmation must be sought from the newspapers. to our foreign exports you will observe a con- siderable decrease last period. This is ow- ing to several causes, and among them to the fact that an unusually large amount ofcotton and other merchandise was sh ped just previouly to the Ordinance of Secession, and since that time much ofour so have gone forward to Northern ports, to be shipped from there. The cotton crop has also been very slow in coming forward. in regard to our prospects of business for the coming season, I would submit the following re- marks: Under any circumstances the business of the approaching season would be com: atively light, in consequence of the short provision crop in several of the States which trade with us. W hat amount of business we = do, in this state of things, will depend very muc upon the ques- tion of or war. If we have peace we will havea unount of business, but not as much as in the years immediately preceding this. The shortness of the provision crops, to which I have alluded, will be one cause; and in addition to this, the credit of our merchants has no doubt been affected by the change fn our politica! rela. tions. Lam informed that the orders of merchants have been reduced, and in some cases counter- manded, and, as a general result, we may expect aconsiderable deduction in our bi ess for the coming season. On the other hand, if we estab- lish a new Government, and maintain peaceable relations with ail other States and nations, we may confidently look fo@ward to a very extended iucrease ia our trade and commerce. poe SI iat an acl Terriate Ixuxpatioxs In HoLLAND.—A com- munication appears in the London News, that several provinces of Holland are threatened with inundations, arising from the giving way of the dykes under long continued beating of the waves. ‘he lives and ory, of thousand are said to be in imminent peril. In Guelderland the distress and damage have assumed a fearful aspect. The people bad battled with all thelr might against be destroying waves, and had become utterly ex- hausted. In many places they had abandoned their abodes and in others were huddled together by hundreds in temporary sheds, where disease Was ravaging them to fearfulextent. The Govern- ment and private benevolence bad ndered assistance, but these were utterly inadequate to méet the distress already existing; and a stron, appeal was made to the people of England to assist in retieving their Dutch neighbors in their calamity. ——_________ Tue Great Sarva” Certiricare.—DearDoc- tor: I will be one hundred end seventy-five years old next October.
