Richards offered two resolat the associat: last Saturday night, and the secon@ as fol- Re. That while we would not presume to advise the President elect as to whom be should call into bis Cabinet counci: ‘we would hail! with delight the selection of Col. Cassius M. Clay for the office of of War, and we believe said appointment would meet with the most cor- dial approval, cere 7 of all blicans in southern States. but of intelligent men of all par- ties, whether of the North or South The resolutions were unanimously adopted. Mr. Ualance, of Iilinois, being present, was invited to address the meeting. Mr B. took the stand, and expressed his pleasure at seeing what the people in his section of the country would think g strange sight—a republican audience fn aslave cSuntry. He bad two objec- tions to addressing the audience; one was that he did not like to undertake what had been designed for another to perform, and the other, he did not like to address republican audiences. When he spoke, he wanted to hammer away at those whose minds are yet 1n the fog with reference to the doc- trine of republicanism. He presumed that all Present were already enlightened. The speaker expressed his gratification at the stand the republicans of this city had taken ; alluded to the troubles now impending over the country, and hoped that the great God of heaven would grant that the day might never come when he might not be able to address this audience as fellow-citizens. Alluding to the sectional differences at more length, Mr. B. sata that if the demagogues on doth sides could but be kent out of the way, our course 2s a nation would be posed ros pe- rous, that the peerle are having no voice in this matter; that the demagognes ate ruling us, and misrepresenting the real views and wishes of the people. Let the people themselves take this ques- tion in band, and our country would be united In the North we bave demagogues who don’t speak the voice of the people; in the South they have demagozues who never speak the voice of Sete, nor let the people speak for them- Mr. B. went on to speak of the obnoxious per- al liberty bilis, which he claimed ought to be repealed; but while saying so, he would state that the personal liberty bills were nevi r thought of until the action ef South Carolina drove the North into their pessage asa retaliatory measure. ath Carolina had a law that any colored m that cawie te Charleston on a northern ship, whether bt be free or slave, steward, cook, crew, or what nol. ‘ue must be taken at once from the reseed wd "1aced in prison and remain there until the wesse) be ready to sail home, and then only be got out after the captain had paid the costs of his Smpr'sonment Massechusetts sent one of her ‘W* st distinguished and conservative legal counsel to Charleston to test this question of the legality of the law before the Supreme Court, and they wouldn’t even permit him to go into court to pre- pare his case. but mobbed him out of town. Mr. B. said the republican party was r dy and willing to enter Into such compromises «s would be entirely satisfactory to the Border Slav He alluded to the pains that are taken all over the South the speeches of abolitionists; and held that the conservative re- poblicans are never heard, and that they are the great mass of the people; that they are neither crazy on the subject of slavery, nor would they faterfere with itia any way. Phat they want the — sr telemig their right, and if our south- ern brethren vea ie patience t! will see that the oo are not er paced After Mr. B. bad concluded, Mr. Nathanie!
