The passage of this resolation will show that the fie of Georgetown are willing todo something or themselves. it will strengthen the committee before Congress, and he would vote for itasa doty to the town. Mr. Dunlop then vacated the chair, which was then occupied until theadjournment by Mr. Stake. Mr. Dunlop stid that this was the most mon- strous i tion ever brought before this Corpo- ration bad eet hae do with railroads, and it was never contemplated by Congress that we should carry on such works. it was a matter for companies, or States, or individuals. Here ‘will be $12,000 interest annually to pay, and we are striving ‘to reduce the expenses by curtailing salaries, &c , and borrowing money. How is it to be paid? * By the ee ofthe town? After some other remarks— Mr. Tenney said he had hoped the resolution ‘would be voted upon without discussion, but be gentleman had opened the ball and he ho} ‘would be fedeiged in replying to him. He nr D ) was a legal gentleman, and’ ? said be ‘‘am net. f am a practical gentiemin—a business man.’ He referred to the corporations of Balti- more and Alexandria subscrib!: ne to railroads, and why not the Corporation of Georgetown? Because we had not power in the charter got from Congress is the very reason we want to ask for power. The people have directed us todo this three years ago, and because their minds may have changed in that time we propose to lay the matter bet ‘ore them again. Afler other remarks of the same tenor— Mr. Dunlop said that it was not a matter for the people, they had nothing to do with it, but the property holders You to mortgage the operty of the town for this debt, it amounts to fiat mortgaging private property for public uses. Nays—Messrs. Dunlop and King—2. Mr. Tenney introdaced a resolution directing the Mayor to call together the citizens in town meeting at Forrest Hall, on Tuesday next, Sth January, to take into consideration the alarming state of the country, &c. Mr. Dunlop saw no necessity for the passage of the resolution. We ought to take no part in po- litical disturbances. Mr. Tenney thought every city, town, hamlet, and village, ought to out. Treason was no longer like a snake in the grass, but stalked abroad like famished wolves, hungry for prey. Let us have an opportunity to ph Soe our sentiments. We are particularly interested in-the preservation of the Union, this will be the battle ground of North and South, and our property would be the nem | of desolating armies. Let every man speak out, show bis hand, and let us know where be can be found. Mr. Pickre}! said that like Mr. Dunlop hesaw no necessity for this resolution. He did not give way in attact ment for the Union to Mr. ‘Tenney or any man, but we had nothing to do with it here. He did not believe there was a disunion man in Georgetown. Let his friend Tenney get up a memorial and express devotion to the Union in as strong Janguage as he pleases, and be (Mr. Pick- Fell) would siga it Mr.Tennev was glad to hear bis friend say there ‘was nota aieunion man intown.
