EE 2 Ceo ES reer od Es DEFERRED LOCAL ARTICLES. se eeeiee Surtesovian InstiteTion —Prof. Rogers, of hia. delivered the first lecture of the course on ‘‘ Civil Engineering” Friday evening ‘The lecturer made it more in this lecture to introduce the business. the works of the coustry, togetber with a brief des eription of the instruments used by them in sur- veying. Among them was the level, which was used in the laying out of roads, rat! and in the construction of bridges. He did not attempt to trace the different conditions through which the roads have passed to deg pj tle hel He thought, speaking of friages. our country was very deficient in bridges, unless it be on the railroads. In this.country neither the bridges cr roads haye attained the OF those in Europe: The principles rafl bridges are tosome extent identical with those governing common road bridges, only the limits area little different. But before a bridge can be built, there must bea road leading to it. He then to “the construction of roads.”’ The chief object of a road {s-to connect two points together by some mode where a vehicle can pass. In order to construct this road, we most first make ourselves acquainted with the tract of country and with its natural features, and choose from the two or three routes ited the nearest and most economical one, avoiding hills and grades. (Refers to the map to illustrate the elevation of bills, mountal; &c.) The idea that a straight line through a of country is always the is ‘Dill copectally if teers be Bes better to go around a |, espectal isa one, then to surmount it, and is no forther. 4 borse dors not experience so much fatigne in joing a long way around, than over slope; foe by ascending a bill he bas virtually re the whole load, es it were, tothe bightab ve the level. It is grade that the engineer studies to avoid (iustrated by drafts) A great deal of attention has been paid to this subject, as be bas to consider by id half mile in relation to grade. It is a matter of as great importance to c der & vertical curve as a horizontal curve. Yet in nine cases out of every ten our pioneers have taken particular pains te goover a bill instead of around it. It is not so with raflroads for obviows reasons. ‘They were designed by careful men, men who calculated the power of engines running on a . level and over grades, and found it economical to level the country rather than to employ sufficient force in an engine to carry a train of cars over 8 slope, to be wasted on the leng levels, not being required. In building a railroad there must be a gradual or constant grade or slight slope througb- ent, {f anyat all. After having taken a general survey of the country and the features of itin a rough way, and decided his route, the next point is to make dy? f of the route witha Sig marking out the zig zag way on his map hen he must go over the route with bis leveling in- strument, to map all the levels and unlevels. By this be is enabled to procure his figures or data, so that in bis office he can mark out his location, and work, in such a way as to be commenced. The engineer is enabled by the course of rivers, since they always run down hill, to ascertain the direction which the grade takes, within certain Limits. The rivers are put down in our maps now-a-days in a sort of spider track fashion These maps being devised for political purposes more ularly, are not assistance enough to the engineer in Lis topographical calculations; he must make one himself. [illustrates a inke and the contour lines produced the rise and fall of the water] Swiss have 49 to 50 zig zag roads in going down a hill, and we all know the extreme heights of these moun- tains and the deficiency of horizortal des- cent. Here the lecturer gave an account of Napoleon crossing the Alpe, and constructing arches so as to avoid the avalanches. He built these arches, or more properly speaking galleries, Mostly of stone, the longest one is 596 feet long The grade of this road was I to 13, and keeps ita grade. Atsome of the points on this road snow is seen the whole yesr round As to the construc- tion of roads, the work which is done upon them I will have to make the subject of my next lec- ture, the 2d of January Prof. Rogers then concluded by reciting 2 poem descriptive of one of these es or gal’eries, from own pen, which was received with much applause.
