ll Sr. Gzonox To Tee Rescur'—Mr. Ex-Secre- tafy Cobb’s newspaper, the Washington Consti- tufion. rallied to his rescue in its issue of Saturday evening last, we perceive. In so doing, it takes a o to strike a back-handed blow at the Star; ‘this journal being the only one in the Federal Metropolis that has spoken of Mr, Oobb’s conduct im terms reflecting the opinion of all Bere but he disunionists per se, who, however y rejolee that he, among others, is laboring the Gevernment of the United States, their heads in very shame on hearing the cifemmstances of his betrayal of his trust dispussed, The para- graph to which we refer is as follows: ‘- The black-republican journals and their allied cotemporaries of every stri pe here and elsewhere, to have drawn with more than ordinary recklessness on their stock of slander, vitupera- tion, and estes Sarr in pot to assail the late of the Hon. Howell Cobb. There te'uct not a day ny that Suie one of the pack may not be heard yelping at the beels of the ex-Secre- tary, and the noisest of them are those wao, got all they can from the democratic party, are now hoping, by their desgusting readin:ss to bite the hand that fed them, t@ cara a few crumbs from the party that will soon have some loaves to ‘divide ” .(The italics are ours.) We say that this courteous paragraph is leveled at the Star, because on a formét occasion, when smarting under its (the Star’s) rebuke of the reckless mendacity with which it sought to strengthen the hands of those who would destroy the Government of the United States for the sake of its destruction, it threw out similar false in- sinuations: First, tuat the Star had received pecuniary favors from the Democratic party; and, next, that its aim isto obtain similar favors from the Republican party. With reference to the first we have'to say that, knowing as well as the Constitution does, that it, itself, has enjoyed aii the favors which the pre- sent and last Democratic administration have had to bestow lawfully, its intimation that the Star has received a share of themi, amounts simply to an aspersion upon their honor. Upon the integrity with which they have administered their trust. Those who conduct the Comstitusion know weil that the Star has never received sixpence on ac- count of any public priating, and has published the public advertisements only in pursuance of the law obliging the Government here to have them printed in the two papers of largest permanent subscription; which law has received no other interpretation since the Star has been in existence, than’that given to it by the previous administra- tions of Harrison, Tyler, Taylor, Fillmore, and Polk. That is to ssy, no new interpretation for the Srar’s benefit Its second insinuation, that the Star, inseeking to preserve the Government and the interests of the people of this immediate section of country from the wanton destruction it (the Constitution) is now striving to bring on both, is endeavoring to.obtain patronage from the in- coming Republican Administration, (which has literally none to give, as it well knows,) is simply worthy of its own history. Thus, it has notoriously lived, moved, and had its being, from its birth, wholly upon Government pat- ronage—which in its case has been little more than plunder; for the record of the legislation of Congress and of the frequent outside and inside ‘HE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON CITY: WEDSESDAY . December 19, 1860. Resioxzy —Brevet Lieut. Colonel Wm. H. T. State he ie 2 native. resi, Al in Nay, Spirit 6f'the Morning Press. The Constitution seems considerably netiled By the thrusts.of the Intelligencer of yesterday, and in reply showers the latter paper with such an as “ malignant,” “ unscrupulous, *” “stupid,” &c., &c. In a recently published letter Senator Hun- ter, contemplating the — formation of a © Southern Confederacy,”> argued in favor of Virginia’s accession to ft, as she would soon derive all the advantages which the non-slave- holding and particularly the New England States now derive from the markets of the cotton States. The Hon. Willoughby Newton has an- nounced similar expectations. This, the Jnieiii- gencer thinks, is based upon the supposition that South Carolina, after opposing a policy contrary to sound political economy, would forego her convictions for the sake of concilfating and en- riching at her own expense the border States. ee An Lerortant Cozrection.—We find that there are grave mistakes in the account of the meeting of the New York delegation of the House, of Representatives on Tuesday evening last, at the chambers of the Hon Jon Cochrane, pub- lished in yesterday’s Star and Baltimore Sun, from the gossip of correspondents of other papers. Of the meeting, we have to say that it was simply one for consultation; to see whether common action om the part of all the New York Repre- sentatives could possibly be obtained with refer- ence to the distracting questions of the times. It ‘was understood oa coming together that no reso- lution whatever should be proposed and voted on. and that determination was carried out in good faith. Mr. Cochrane stated generally bis views of the grievances of the South, and their proper ress. From that subject the meeting passed an informal conversation on the pro- priety of ceercing aseceding State, Mr. Reynolds embodied bis views in favor of coercicn in writing, which were discussed; developing thus an oppo- sition to coercioa on the part of Messrs. Cocbrane, Briggs, Sickles, Clark, Maclay, and Barr. It was supposed that rome of the Republicans were hardly prepated to take such extreme ground as Mr. Reynoldsadvocated. Mr. Sicklescommitted to writing and discussed the expediency of inviting the Virginia delegation to a consultation. He and Mr. Cochrane strongly urged this course; which seemed to meet but little favor from the Repub- licans. The meeting then adjourned until this (Wednesday) evening; having disclosed the fact that the points at issue in the House and before the country were the same points which divided the New York delegation by nearly strictly party lines. So much for its attack upon the Star. Now, a brief word further, in its ear. Does it still fall to realize that its open labors to destroy the Government on whose bounty it bas lived, are fast bringing all to believe in the truth of the fol- lowing paragraph from the letter of Secretary Floyd, which we find published in its issue em- bracing ite attack upon us? “itisa pe error to meppeee to foster the plant ing f of the aid prompt er From the Prince con- sort, who sat silently. by and witnessed the delib- erate insult of an American minister by a British eer before the con; i ‘of all ‘Lristendom, simply because mast existed fn the United States. down to the wretched cocknsy, bimself forty times the slave to suffering and “ire eumstances beyond what any ro is to law— there is not an Englishman who does not 4n his beart abbor slavery, if Ae does mot also abhor the country where tt exists.”’ (italics again ours.)
