HOW BLYSNKS WON THE WATER- MELONS Perhaps the best watermelon a Backs county is that of Mr. ——. ell, “for the sake of argument,” and to keep from burting his feelings, we'll call him Mr. Thingumbob. Mr. Thingumbob didn’t embark in that branch rtieulture to which watermelons belong, merely for the fan of thething. He went it to make money, and he has done it. Thingumbob has ness for 8p: the world it is for that specie of posket ture which the preach jously denounce as “ the vile dross of earth,” and the b’hoys style “spondalicks” and ‘spizserinctum.” If Mr. Thingumbob were to suffer a watermelon of the market value of fifteen cents to fall from his cart and wreck itself inst the pave- ment, he woulda’t get done feeling bad about the loss within the ensuing six weeks. In short, Mr. Thingumbob is the stingiest man ou ever saw, and if he ever dies of a broken : Toast it will be over the loss of « shilling. \ You have oftem.seen suel On Saturday Mr. Thingumbob brought a load of watermelons to town, and aa we gazed into the cars where they reposed in sullen grandeur upon their pallets of straw, we re- marked to # considerable number of specta- tors, and to the community at large, that ‘they aro indeed very fine,”’ a remark which, we are proud to perceive, elicited the cordial t hb silent approbation of everybody within the sound of our voice. We hadn't more than finished the observation when =P came d says to Mr. Thingumbob : ese melons rf yours are per- “ Strange , *d like to swindle you eut of one of them. swindle me out of one of them, you're weloome « Well,” said Mr. Thingumbob, “‘if you ean to it.” “Oh, I was morely joking about that,’’ said Blyanks, ‘ but really Iam very fond of water- melons, and probably can eat more of them than any six men you ever saw; it’s astonisn- ing what aquantity it takes to. dome. How 5 many of them large ones there of yours do you suppose I could eat ?”’ i “Why,” said Mr. Thingumbob, measuring the size of Blynak’s mouth with his eyes, and casting them down till they rested at a point near the lower extremity of his vest, ‘I don’t suppose from your looks that you could eat more than one.” “One! why, great ess, stranger, what are you talking about 1 tell you what I'll do—if you'll furnish me sixof the best you've got, and if I don’t eat everyone, I'll make you 8 present of the finest hat in town,”’ Mr. Thingumbob looked at Blynnks with on wide open; then took off his hat and t that, and ¢! clapping it on his head and pressing it firmly, laimed : “Tf I don’t do it, blow m “ All right,” said Biynnks; “ hand out half a dosen.”’ Mr. Thingumbob began to hand out the “‘per- fect whales,’ one by one; while Blynnks iaid them down on the pavement with their ends against the carbstone. ‘+ Hold ca,”’ exclaimed Mr. Thingumbob, as he rested the last one on the sideof the wagon- bed, ready to be lifted off, ‘“suppose you should eat ‘em all up, who’sto pay for em 5 id Nobody, of course,”’ answered Blynoks; “in that case you lose; but if [ fail to eat them I lose, and am to give you a ten dollar hat.”” “Go ahead,”’ said Mr. Thingumbeb, hand- ing down the sixth and last melon. Biyoaks drew forth his jack-knife, and say- ing to the bystanders, as he seated himseif on the eurb-stone with his feet in the gutter. « Gentlemen, I would like to invite you tojoin me, but circumstances over which I have no control, force me to withhold the courtesy,’’ he split the best looking melon in two, and taking one half of %t on bis lap, commenced leisurely to eat 3 ; id he, after having finished it, ri- blade of his knife with the “li lay that other half iy dinner; I'll try another after supper, and I think by about Monday night or Tuesday morn- ing I'M wipe out the pile.” “Hallo!” exclaimed Mr. Thingambob, springing to his feet in the cart, ‘that won't do—you' ve got to finish them no “ Finish them now! What tho deuce do you mean by that? I hope you don’t expect me to eat them all at once? «Of course I d ssid Mr. Thingumbob, excitedly; ‘that’s what you said you'd do, and you've got to d er . “Look here, cid man,I bet you a new hat that [ could eat six of your water melons, but I didn’t tell yoa [ would sit down in the public street and make a confounded hog of myself.’’ me for the one you've cut open,” | b. 5) .”” said Blynk: am still willing to eat the balance of the but if I do, [ am going to take my time for it “<I see now what yeu've been after all the time—you just wanted to swindle me out of a water melon.”” ; “And you think I've done it too, don’t you?” « Yea, I'il be darned if I don’t; but you’ ot to pay forit, or there’ll bea fight rig ere.*” “Pay you for it, be hanged! ple Z didn’t you tell me at the start, if 1 could swindie you out of one, I would be welcome to it?’’ «« Well—yes—I believe I did,” said M Thingumbob, shoving bis hat aside and scratch- ing his head, “‘bat you told me you were only joking.”’ : yt I tell you so now. I've been joking all along, and if you can’t see the point of the _ by this time, you're & greater sight bigger ‘ool than I took you to be. Mr. Thingumbob put his water melons back into the eart in silence, and almost in tears he kicked the unfinished ha! the gutter, and mounting bis vehicle, drove slowly across the uare. Half an hour after, we saw him driving along, crying at the top of his voice— oe hn ‘s them water melons!” oe Suootixe on Tas Wixi is astonishing how stubborn young sportsmen are to believe in the principle that it is necessary to fire in advance of a distant flying object for the pur- pose of killing it! They persist in the foolish notion that almost on the instant of pulling trigger the shot reaches the object aimed at. Many years ago I was among that stubborn ass, until convineed of error in a simple and traordinary manner, which I e for the purpose of endeavoring to impftess upon my readers the importance of this fundamental prineiple.~ I was shooting one day, in the month of October, bt large turvip field, ee my dogs and gun, when a brace of partri: po ae the distance of fifty-five or sixty yards; they flew rapidly to the right, in direct line, one behind the other, at a apace of about two fect apart. I took deliberate aim about two inches in advance of the leading bird and fred; when to my su }, the hindmost bird fell dead, and the lending one, which was the ob- ject of my aim, few away untouched. At the moment I felt so astonished at the result that I could not recover myself soon b to dis- charge the other barrel at the bird which had Ou pieking up my bird, I found feet six inches im advance of the bird killed, was not apy too much at the the erroneous aay upon which I made my own error, that I felt as if a curtain had risen before me and exposed the true secrets of the art of killing cross shot. And I eso truly assert that this simple but singular me in and sin and ninety slaves; the San Jacinto one with tween five and six hundred; and the Mystic one witbout any negroes on board. So you see the steamers now do the work quite prettily. Our chances, I fear, have rather me in,” thor we are a fast s! and captured a brig last winter yee ar oe at Loanda, which fun of course iug of sea-wall, wharf, Naval Depot. Loanda the margin, and at the head of a deep bay, bear- ing the same name. It has many large buildings, some of them prettily situated; also several cathe- drals, one now entirely without roof. The whole of the large houses seem the old church of fallen roof, and I set them down asbaving flourished about the same time. On hots hud struck it in the head and so that my aim, which was at least two “ nce and rate at which they were flying. I felt so foreibl Pa Prom the African Const: Weare favored with the following interesting extracts from a letter received in this eity from the African const: U.S. Prac Sur Constsxcation, St Pauls de Loanda. Aug. 20, ieso. * We are again at anchor off after an it absence of n: we visited M . and Princes Island. Niagara, Mohican, San Jacinto, Masion and he ‘steamer Mohican captured, a few da: ship having on board ‘about nine x rm! he was not, however, condemned after being sent to the United States. Apartfrom slave catching, African cruising is more than Loanda looks much as when we left last winter. The squadron went to sea and left me here, where I spent about a month ap tegeeo os He aoe c., connec! wi dilapidated old town, situated on place has a gloomy and say 6 mere gor ut in keeping w! ate in a wall much defaced, yet [could make out 1653, (one of the officers informed me he saw one date 1416.) which is no doubt about the time this antique looking town was most prosperous In those days the slave trade being legal, the best buildings presume were put up by slavers. Near the old custom-bouse, on a pier, still may be seen a large stone chair, elaborately chiseled. and in tolerable good state of preservation, which was occupied, it is said, by a priest during the embarkation of slaves in days of yore, whose cfflce was to bless each slave as he passed into the boat, receiving a certain fee foreach one. Of course this was consistent in those y times; but would not much please er Harper ty Brown discipies. I have idea the trade is still familiar to the Portuguese and Spaniards of Loanda Scarce any English oken here, except in the two American mercantile houses; scarce any- tering but negroes to be seen, but no lack of them assure you. They can be bought for about $30. Those who can speek 2 little Spanish or Portu- guese of cou ommend more money. I wish you could see the interior ple coming in, laden with beeswax, elephants’ tusks, &c Sometimes six or eight hundred may be seen making their way to the town, resembling so many ants, for certainly they are quite as black and nearly as naked; their burdeus, too, bear about the same proportion to the carrier as those of the little Insecta. They are, indeed, rude specimens of the human family. “Soon as they reach town the greedy traders readily relieve them of their burdens. Then bere group about the streets, basking in the scorching sand, with which the place seems filled, or crowd about a few ing embers, each one cooking or scorch- ing corn or cassani, to suit their view agenda tastes, then filling up with the rough f with equal lack of ceremony. Such crowds present not the most beautifal picture to look upon, and I assure you thelr proximity is objectionable, on account of a certain accompaniment which in this hot climate necessarily pervades such acrowd. You must not, however, suppose that there is no other way of getting over Loanda sand besides ing through so interesting acrowd. The Portuguese use a novel little fixing which iscarried by two slaves, called a ‘‘Machilla.”’ By this arrange- ment the motive power becomes intelligent for jour special comfort, or in other words, the horse begomes also the driver. All you have to do is to step intoa *‘Machilla”’ and intimate what point you wish to make, then draw your curtains and choose the most comfortable posture till you ar- rive at your destination, for so smoothly do these fellows walk, you scarce realize you are moving. The Portuguese have also introduced a new mode of riding at Madeira since I was there in 1847. A sled, on which a nice spring carriage is arranged, drawn by well fed and well cai for oxen, and as — Jog along with their easy gait, their glossy hides almost reflecting the sled, a kind ef lullaby feeling is brought about, bearing no analogy to those break-limb apprehensions which are ever in attendance when darti ng along bebind a 2 40 horse Weare daily expecting the sloop Portsmouth, when I presume we will again make a cruise, (1 mean on her arrival.) “Potice Gcuaap.”’-—-A mounted camer. for police purposes. limited to twenty-five In num- ber bas been orzanized at Leonardtown, Md., under the ‘title of “Police Guard,” for the pu pose of affording protsction to their immediate section und the country at large.
