The ‘‘stars and stripes’ once rent asunder, we immediately sink to the po- sition of a second, third, or fourth-rate power, and from the Canadas to the lower extremity of the can continent, there will be presented tacle of the wo "E. of our much- epulican system In the dreary pros- re is not a citizen who does not feel per- ated. The jolloxing actually occurred at a neighboring town: . In the midst of a crowd of witnesses the clergy- man bad just completed that interesting ceremony which binds tn the silver bonds of wedlock two wi ling hearts, and stretched forth bis hand to im- lore the blessing of Heaven on the union. At nis peiat the groomsman, seeing the open bands eacbed out, supposed it was the signal for bim to rrender the wedding fee, which was burning in bis pocket. Accordingly, just as the clergyman closed bis eyes in prayer, he felt the pressure of two swetty balf-doliars upon his open palm. Rercstxe To Give Ur tae Nationa Sonos — A correspondent of a New Orleans paper an- nounees termined opposition to the absn- donment of our National Songs, as indicated in the action of certain public gatherings in South Carolina and Georgia, confessing toa peculiar love for thé brave eld straius under which our fathers fougbt and won, he naively adds: I sincerely believe I never could learn to get entirely over a certain moisture of the eyelids that always comes to me when listening to the sweet and stately melody of the Star-spangled Banner, whether issuing from a company of mimic soldiers in the broad glare of day, or whether at nightfall, cently swelling over moonlit waves from a far-off line-of-battle-suip. Nor do | think I could easily conquer a certain tingling of the fingerends, aud a peculiar combat! ve tendency which will creep over my usually quiet nature, when the soul-stirring notes of Hail Columbia, marching onward like an army to the field, sud- denly breaks upon my ear. Much less, in view of the fact that even Yankee Doodle, plaved ona tw stringed fiddle by 3 negro boy, ed upon a cotton bale, will cause emotions patriotic !n char- acter, would I guarantee to nerve my heart to utter forgetfulness of any other of our national melodies, endeared to us by so many recollections of bravely-foug bt felds. and hard-earned victories. TRaNsogsDENTALism —This word is in fre- quent use, but it is not always correctly under- stood. Anything which {s peullarly abstruse or absurd, which is highly metaphysical or intensely silly, which is so profound that no bottom can be, discovered, or so shallow that It cannot even be skimmed, which coutains the best lesson of wis- dom or the shabbiest philosophy of the pretender, which is expressed In the simple language of Plato or the bombast of a modern newspaper s_ribbler, is indifferently called transcendental But the true signification !s this: The basis of Locke’s philosophical system is that all knowledge is received iuto the soul through the medium of the senses, and 1s to be judged of and analyzed by lerstanding. ‘Tis may be called the sen- sophy. Kant, on the coutrary, denies know eis received ogee @ the senses, and maintains that the highest and universally received truths are communicated to a faculty witbin the soul Go peonte mere under standing, which he dgnominates pure reason, dis- tinguisbing it from the undefstanding. Accord- ing to this system all perceptions of true, the beautiful and the good are revealed to the pure reason; while it is the province of the understand- ing to determine upon external things, such as facts, scientific laws, etc. This philosophy is nained transcendental Revotvtionaxy Onivorme —The December number of ihe Historical Magazine contains a valuable paper by Mr. Thompson. Westcott, of Philadelphia, correcting erroneous jotions which are prevalent relative to the colors and materials of the uniforms of the contineatal troops during the revolutionary war. The popular notion is that the lar colors were blue and buff. Such undoubtedly were the colors of the Commander- in-Chief and his staff; but tae rank and file rarely wore these colors. The prevailing colors, says Mr. Westcott, were browu, mixed up with red or white, and green with like trimmings. We have in our Atlautic cities certain companies of volun- teers called ‘Continental Companies’? which through ignorance of this subject, have adopted uniforms such as the private soldier of the revolu- tionary war could never bave worn; and indeed in these modern companies, each member appears with blue and buffcvat, buff breeches, and usually top boots, cocked hat, and ruffied shirt, such as ashington and the major-generals usually wore upon grand p: ie days. ‘This is very absurd to the hb storical student. Mr. Westcott gives de- scripti. ns of the uniforms of many of the comp:- nies which served in the revolution, and ‘‘Couti- nentallers’” would do weil to look them over A Romantic Trie oF Three rs, all fast, recently set up a gambling house in St. Petersburg, Russia, aud being waz ply and clever, assed much money. an married men o!
