It need hardly be remarked that if such statesmen as Sen- ator Hale, who discourses of the readiness of the North to attempt force against the South, on one side, and Senator Wigfall, who avowedly regards the Union as an accursed thing that should be de- stroyed under any circumstances whatever, on the other side, are to cunduct the delfberations of the body designed to consummate measures to relieve American public affairs of the difficulties by which they aresurrounded, the result must be as uosuccessful as ever before . The trouble has really grown out of the perti- nacity with which members living, a8 public men, upon the excitability of the country’s nerves, North and South, have used their posi- tions in Comgress as the means of perpetuating their own connection with public life by infla- ming the sectional prejudices each of his own constituents. Had the debates of Congress upon slavery for the last ten years been conducted with closed doors, or even had the Congressional Globe not existed in that time to spresd the poison of their debates broadcast throug hout the land at the cost of the National Treasury, the North would not at thie moment be aggressive upon the slavery question to the point of driving the conservative Portion of the South out of the Confederacy ; nor would the extreme South now entertain the strange hallucination that the Union at best is but 2 clog and a curse to Its future.
