CoLtjsion oF THE Srramer Gronce Pack wit « CasaL Boat—A Cup Daownep.— ‘Yesterday, as the steamer Geo. Page was making her Il o'clock a. m. trip from Wasbington to Alexandria, while passing the mouth of the Ana- costia branch, she came in contact with a canal boat towed by the steam-tug Belle Haven, the usual signal to avoid colifsion, itseems, havi. been given by both Loats.. The ebannel bere 4 extremely nairow, and in it lay a schooner at anchor. The pilot of the Page steered to the right of the anchored schooner, the passage on either side being very narrow, and when too late, discovered that the steam-tog was beading in the some direction. ‘The engine of the Page was in- stantly stopped and reversed, and the steamer headed as far as possible to the west, in order to zllow room for the tug and eanal boat to pass be- tween her and the schooner. When opposite each other, however, the steamer stru-k the md and veered from her course, coming in tact with the stern of the canal boat, and car- Tying away hercabin. The collision wasso great that It knocked a smell child of the captain of the canal beat overboard. The child immediate- ta k, and never rose to the surface afterwards, giving rise to the probability that it was struck bya plank. Every effort was made to recover it, hatin vain. Geduey, of the George Page, and Capt Levin Duke, of the Belle Haven. The Page being a Meensed steamer, comes under the recent law of Congress for the regulation of licensed steamers, which requires an investigation before the Kxam- iner’s Court in the case of that steamer. The tug does not come under the same regulations. The justice, toaliow the regular Examiner to arrive Trom Baltimore, set the case fora hearing on Mon- day next. at !2 o’clock.
