The levee at Forrest Hall, at night, is expected to be one of the most pleasant entertainments ever given here. There was a fair attendance at the meeting of the Republican Association in the wigwam, cor- ner of High and Gay streets, last evening. But little business done except appointing a com- mittee to devise ways and means for getting the election returns just as quick as ble on the 6th prox. A prominent member of the parent As- sociation in your city (who is said to be a candi- date for the marsbalship) was on hand with a formidable —— of documents, pre, , it was supposed to elighten the members as to his views of political matters and things in general, inclu- ding, perhaps, a rehearsal of his celebrated Chi- ras, 5} ‘h, but one of the leaders was overheard to hint to him that he believed the Association would prefer not to have any speech making. ‘This was rather an unkind cut, and the would-be orator took bis denarture a sadder if not a Wise-r man. One of the most prominent of the few Douglas democrats in our city, (who defended his candidate with spirit and al paged before the Bell and Everett Association here, a short time since, it will be remembered,) was, we are told, on en- tering the room, loudly applauded. We cannot vouch for it, as we were not there at the time to see. The association adjourned until next Friday evening. We regret to learn that the work on the dis- tributing reservoir has been suspended by the con- tractor, Mr. A. A. McGaffey, acting, it is seid, by direction cf the Secretary of War. We presume the suspension is only temporary, in order probs- bly to consider some proposed changes in the character of the work. Secretary Floyd will robably visit the reservoir this morning, and we ae some arrangement will be made for an im- mediate recommencement of operations, The laying of the tbirty-inch water pipes in Bridge street is pre ressing finely. and the same may be said of the brick work of the high-eer- vice reservoir.
