Ilis crime, escape. recapture, and adventures have from time to time been published. Durtng his exciting trial, Gordon, with bis hands ame addressed himself to the jury. He was very much affected. and his youthful appear- ance excited the sympathy of the crowd in bis be- half. The court charged the jury, when they retired and soon returned with their verdict. They handed it sealed to theclerk. He went to the door, opened and read it to the crowd. As the word guilty fell upon their ears there was no outbursts of passion or pe apnea was quiet. The pris- oner heard it with composare, es if ne expected it. He asked time to prepare, to settle up his business, and to see his mother, whose arrival he was dafly expecting. The court sabmitted the question to the people how long a time should be granted be- foro hisexecution. 1 was proposed that six days beallowed. A vote wus taken an@ it was granted; In Phiiadelpbia, Wm. Byerly, return judge of the Fourth Ward has been arrested, charged with presenting at the meeting of return judges a forged copy of election returns, which gave the choice of Cengressman from the First District to John M. Botler, Republican, instead of Wm. E. Lehman, Democrat. who was legally elected, according to the duplicate returns filed in the office of the Prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas after the election. From tie tes- timony ef the judges, it-was clearly proved that a fraud had been perpetrated; thet the returns from the Fourth ward were falsified, and that on them depended the election of Mr. Lehman. ‘There was no testimoney toshow that Byerly committed the frand, thou the magistrate held him to bai! mn $1,500 for court. The aifair has caused great excitement and indignation. Spencer, the owner of two of them. They were seutenced to be hung on 9th of November next. The effort to kill was arranged by placing astrong ad- mixture of some poisonous herb or plant into a basin of milk ‘he peculiar odor of the poison proved to be sostrong that the suspicions of thoee for whom it was intended were aroused before the miik was drank, and to this cifcumstance are they doubtless indebted for the Preservation of their lives.
