MeEEtinc oF tex REPUBLICAN AssoctaTION Last Niont —The Books ain’t Closed. —The meet- ing of the Republican Association in this city lest night, at their Wigwam, corner of Second street and Indiana avenue, was eer = and most entbusi: meeting of Kind thet has yet been held in thiscity. The recent b- can victories in Pennsylvania, Ohio, In- , Seem to heve imparted additional ener- to the old members, and had the effect of Gilpnten cendden and large influx of those who have heretofore been shy as to the policy of uniti * with such an organization. The capacious hal was ‘jammed.’ Esputa’s band was present, and, other rited airs, performed a new march, com andset to music by Prof Fsputa entitied *‘Lincoln’s March” The number ot applications for membership on this occasion was one hundred and five! Mr Hall submitted the following; which wes read by the Secretary: Whereas a report been put in circulation,— which hes gained additional credence from the fact of its publication by a city eae the Republican Association had closed its books. and would receive no more applications for member- sbip, because the ‘genuine original Jacobs’’ feared to incresse their list of members, in view of the in election of their candidates, lest there would not be ices enough for the appli- ants, the ssid Association deems it due to I's members snd to the large number of persons who wish to enrol under their banner, to formaliy deciare— That the books are still open, and members are ‘wanted; and all sympathizers are cordially invited to send in their names without delay, and be non. bered with the ‘-original Jacobs Mr Goodloe thought the e of such a pre- amble and declaration would be giving too much eonseqnence to that which had a said merely in a joke, and further would effect nothing The editor of the Star (in which journal the statement ref-tred to appeared) and the readers of that sheet would very soon discover that such was not the case, from the fact of such a large number of applications being received thisevening. Such ‘an interesting fact would soon become generall known; which, ia bis opinion, would Nea suf- ficient contutation of any such idle rumor. Mr. Hall said he thougtut some suet formal dec- laration was necessary. Scarcely a day passed without bis being accosted by some acquaintances in the street, and the inquiry made, ‘-How’s that about the republican association closi: their book itso? He thought a formal declaration on this subject would be highly proper; and not ouly proper, but it was necessary Mr. Cooinbs, the chairman, concurred with Mr. Goodloe in regard to this resolution He did not think a declaration framed in the manner of the one just offered would gomport with the dignity of the jation. It was worded in too loose and jesting a manner, which might subject them to unpleasant criticism. As had already been re- marked, the public would very soon ascertain the fact from the proceedings of that meeting that the books were not closed, but they were willing and desirous to have all sympatbisers unite with them ‘The position of this association and their partial sy ppathisers mig bt be {illustrated by the anecdote of Noab and the drowning man at the door of the Ark ‘fhe waters which were to deluge the whole land had been failing a few hours, when a aman passed near tbe door of the ark, knee-deepin ‘water. Noah noticing this man, invited him within to take shelter from the severe storm n the ark. “Thank you,” said the man, ‘but it is hardly worth while to come in, as 1 don’t think it will be much of astorm.”’ So it was bere, there were a number still lingering on the outside, in- 8 sting that it was not to be much of a storm. The proposition was finally withdrawn At the suggestion of the chair, the executive committee of We republican and wide-awake as- soctations retired toan adjoining room, with a view of arranging @ programme of the torch-light ession to take place to-night. i Dr. Breed being called upon for a s; b, oeen- the attention of the association for some fif- m or twenty minutes in a spirited manner After the expiration of balf an hour the commit- tee returned, and through their chairman, Mr. L. Clepbane, presented a programme, which was read by the secretary. 2s follows ; PROGRAMME OF PROCESSION TO-NIGHT ‘The association will meet atthe Wigwam’? at 7% o'clock. The republicans expect to muster one thousand Strong in their W wropreson to-night. Additional torches (lamps) have been sent for to other cities, for the use of the escort of wide awa es. which body will doubtless turn out in considerate force. Sowe epprebension is felt about town of disturb- auees in uence of the procession, and the police force will, it is supposed, be concentrated slong the line of march. ‘* maRsWal WISE’’ DEFINES a4 eer At the republican wigwam on the night before Last there wes a Livelytime, after the following ‘That well-knowa *- Original-Jacobs” re- bifean, Mr. James Wise, of the meal depot, enth street, and adelegat to the Chicago Con- vention, took occasion to refresh the memories of the new-comers and eleventh-bour wringers-in of the wigwam upon the fact that be had been both Wise and wide —_ the’ + 3 ogee the interestt po! fog se oF whic’ aber 2 fem pting and luxarious.s dispj of tat ies in tag petapective ’ Ar. The case was dismissed accordingly. Beit ano Everett Meetine Last Nieut — There was quite a large and enthusiastic meeting of the Central Beil and Everett Club last night. After the transuction of the usual routine business, and a number of gentlemen had enrolled their pames ou the list as members, the Spon ga Mr. Kennedy, made a few b»ppy remarks, reviewing the Pennsylvania election, and saying that they had met the enemy, and, for the present, they (the Bell men) were theirs (the republicans), but in a few weeks they would again meet face to face. when it was hoped the tables would be turned. He also poured ‘‘hot shot” into those traitors who Were rushing to the republican wigwam and joining the Wide Awakes, because they now thought Lincoln would be elected, and there would be some chance of getting an otfice Mr Tayloe, of this city, and late president of the association, making his appearance in the room, was loudly called for, wheu that gentleman mounted the rostrum and delivered a lengthy speech, alluding to the defeat of the fusion ticket in Pennsylvania and saying thet New York was yet to decide whether Mr. Lincolm would be elected, and from information rece} from that ‘Stite, be believed it would cast {ts vdte for the Union. He alluded to the fact that it was claimed for Mr. Lincoln that be was a Clay whig, proving conclusively that such was not the case He also poked fun at the office holders, siying thata trunk inannufacturer bad arrived in the city, who ex- pected shortly to make large sales of these conve- niences. ‘There were a great many gentlemen now realding bere who would go traveling after thed4thof March He spoke of tbeantagoniom ex- isting between the Douglas and Breck!uridge men, and urged them to rally under the banner of Bell and Everett, as the only hope of defeating Lincoln. The speaker was ee uently and loud! applauded throughout his address) The elu then adjourned with three hearty cheers for Bell and Everett. ar At br Acatn.—Fight No 5. —Even after the last arrest mentioned in the Star yesterday, bel- ligerent spirit was not extinguished in the locality of the “‘old stamping ground,”’ Sixth street and the Avenue, where the city authorities in ther zeal for the preservation of the public peace bave ordered a detachment of policemen to b- stationed. The last affair was between H A. Cook, P. M Dubant and George Dubant. The parties were arrested and taken before Justice Donn. who held all concerned to bail for a further bearing on Monday next, at 5 o’clock p m. Considerable excitement was caused by the complaints of various persons that a police officer refused to do bis a when called upon to make arrests. Dr C. Boyle, President of the Jackson Democratic Assocfation, went with the parties to the mayis- trate’s office, and there accused Policeman Jaines Irwin of refusal to arrest an individual whom he had pointed out as requiring to be arrested After the a were beld to ball, Dr. Boyle proceeded to the Mayor's office end reported officer Irwin for refusal ty do duty. The “stamping ground” begins to recover its former notoriety, and last night quite a number of ‘the boys"? were about, to havea sight of any “‘sclence” that might be displayed. Even the residents of the suburbs were arriving at the ground and making inquiry relative to the time set for the next tight A gen- tleman inquired at the Nationa! with the most perfect simplicity, “Can you tell me, sir, what time the next round comes off?” The person asked replied that he did not know the exact time; but presumed that by inquiring of the uni- formed police at the corner he could ascertain. The charges to be considered next Monday by Justice Donn include assauit and battery, pro- fanity, and boca by 3 concealed weapons. The arrests were ma y county officers Piggott, Basher, and D A. Harrover, except the last arrest = ae Cook, which was made by policeman rwin. Temperance D. IN ALEXANDRIA.
