Whether this course has been adopted by our city officials toward all the hawks that followed the royal party to Wasuington, we do not know, but one thing was apparent yester- day, last night, and this morning, and that was the perfect freedom which seemed to be enjoyed by them. Notwithstanding there was a detail of the city police to do detective duty, want of knowledge of the service or a lack of willingness to attend to It, seemed to obstruct them. Cer- tainly there are many lawless characters in Wasb- ingtoa, ——- for op) nities to operate upon the unwary, ai they do not appear anxious to escape nekioe, but rather court obscrvation. A gang of Baltimore shoulder bitters passed up and down the Avenue, using the most profane and in- decent language, in the hearing of ladies, per- — regardless of the law and unchecked by officfals. At night they were driving about in coaches, singing and yelling, and ‘making night hideous;” but they were undistarbed. ‘This morn- ing a gang of “‘knucks” were going up and down the streets, and took no care to hide their weapons. Atan early hour they took their break- fasts ander the porch of the Bank of Washington butlding, from whence they were followed bya detective officer not in the city employ. A num- ber of fights came off during the early part of last night, and no arrests were made. The grandmother is very old and feeble, drawing near to the close of life, and she has a little property, which will be for disposition after her death. The Savoys have theold woman in care, and this excited the fear of Butler that an improper influence would be exerted over ber mind in the disposition of the property, Bad feeling was manif-sted by harsh language, and Butler, in a moment of anger, tq thrash Savoy's wife, during his nce.
