THE EVENING STAR. ee WASHINGTON OITY: THURSDAY . September 13, 1860, Spirit of the Morning Press. The Constitution treats upon “Mr. Douglas— His Labors and his Reward.” The Intelligencer bas an article of nearly eight columns against “‘ The Assumed Right of Seces- sion.” 0 (07 Mr. Seward is now in Wisconsin, having ‘deen joined by Charles Francis Adams. On ac- count of the disaster to the steamer Lady Elgin, there was no public demonstration at Milwaukie. U7 Trenton, N. The population consists of 7,302 white males, ©4604 white females, 245 colored males, and 315 eolored females apmrenennpnaearsentenstinnapentias U7" At a late meeting, the Loudoun Agri¢ultu. ral Society unanimously re-elected all its officers, as follows: President, Col. N. Berkeley; Ist Vice President, John Aldridge; 2d do , Col. William Fulton; 3d do., George D. Smith; Secretary, J. W. Edwards; Treasurer, J. W. Wildman. I> Referring to the late dreadful catastrophe on Lake Michigan, the New York Express well notices a startling truth, namely, ‘that there are Scores of other steamers on the inland waters of the United States, carrying thousands and thou- sands of passengers to-day.with no better provision for saving life, in the event of mishap, than the Lady Elgin bad. If the appalling sacrifice of human life on Lake Michigan can de any thing to induce a remedy for this criminal negligence, some little good will have come of a great evil, and many of the unfortanate beings who went down with the wreck will not have had their lives thrown away wholly in vain. {1 The eighth session of the National Pomo- logical Society, at Philadelphia, was commenced on Wednesday, at the Assembly Buildings. The display of fruit in the saloon on the second story is unnsually fine, and includes peaches. pears, apples, grapes, plums, quinces, cherries, black- berries, &c. Nearly every State in the Union is represented in the collection, and even Kansas has her quota on the tables. Among the prin- ¢ipal contributors are H.R. Roby, of Virginia, ‘who has twenty-two varieties of pears and twen- ty-five of apples, and Franklin Davis, of Vir- ginia, who has seventy-five varieties of apples. {> In referring to the rumored intention of certain influential Mexicans to place Comonfort once more at the head of affairs in Mexico, the New York Commercial pays the ex-President the following compliment : “‘We always regarded President Comonfort’s administration as approaching very nearly to ‘what Mexico needed. His policy was a moderate conducted with fairness to all parties, and swith marked ability. It was indeed too mode- rate and impartial for the present generation of Mexicans, and would be so to-day. He felt the necessity of greater executive power than the con- stitution gave him, and he sought it legitimate! through the Mexican Congress; but the church interest was too powerful for him, and would be mow; and we greatly doubt whether Miramon and Juarez would cease their rivaly to make way for him.” Persenal +++ Capt. After some persuasion, our Captain consented to give us permission to go, and | can assure you that we seldom, if ever, passed go Pleasant an evening. We were agsin invited by the ladies of the piace to attend 2 dance the next morning, and yet again we went tw 4 third on Saturday evening. Now for e few words in regard to the ladies. J aasure you, dear Editor, § never expect to find so Pleasant and agreeable a set of ladies at one place. ‘There was oue in particular, a Washingtonian at Present, who seemed to be the fzvorite of all, and it was nothing strange, for she was gifted with as engaging manners as is possible for any young lady to possess. 1am glad to be able to claim her as oue of the daughters of the sunny South We are much indebted to the ladies of Old Point and to W. Caleb Willard, proprietor, for their Kindness in rendering our stay agreeable. ‘We sail to-day for Point Lookout, and thence to the Patuxent, near Leonardtown, which we ‘will reach about the 20th of September, and con- elude the practice cruise on the 30th, ouly tecom- mence aseries of hard studies and stern discipline te meet our future examinations This little Fecreation at Old Point we deserve after our severe cruising, which has been anything but a Pleasure excursion Our hammocks are not beds of unruffied rose leaves; nor would our fare tempt 2 Sybarite. Senator CLINGMAN, we are gratified in being able to state, instead of taking the stamp for Douglas, has taken it for Breckinridge and Lane, basing his change of position on the ground that the current course of D., in doing bis best tobring about Lincoln’s election, and in avowing most ultra anti State rights (‘force’) @octrines, in or- der to curry favor with abolitionism, proves him to be “‘a desperate poli bler.”” While we congratu r. ‘man on the fact that his eyes are at length open to the (to the South) dangerous tendency of the labors of Doug- las, we hail bis conversion as evidence of the truth of our oft-repeated declaration, that ere the first Monday in November, every honest and un- selfish Democrat throughout the South will be found arrayed against Douglas freesoilism as being far more dangerous to the South than tbe triumph of Lincoln; because it seeks to create a freesoil party there, while if Lincoln triumphs, the result cannot fail to be a South united in her own de- fense—the only key to a full and, we sincerely believe, a peaceful and happy solution ofthe polit- ical problem of the slavery question. —.—— A Sexsation.—The decision of the Commis- sioner of Patents, extending the Howe sewing machine patent, is destined to generate most in- tense excitement throughout the country That ts already evident in the comments of our ex- changes upon the fact. The similar extension or renewal of the patents of Morse, Goodyear, McCormick, et. al., out of which enormous for- tunes had notoriously been realized, in shocking the country’s sense of justice and propriety, paved the way for the manifestation of great popular indignation in this case. The question is simply one between monopolists and the public at large— not between unfortunate and under-paid inventors, and the monopolists. The result is, evidently, to be a prompt change in the law which authorizes whoever may happen to be at the head of the Patent Bureau to mulct the public in damages to the extent of millions upon millions of dollars, in cases wherein the parties seeking to secure them have already become enormously wealthy by and throngh their profits upon the patents the extension or renewal of which they seek.
