THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON OITY: TUESDAY ...... +++. August 25, 1860, = Spirit of the Merning Press. The Constitution discusses with an evening paper the relation of Mr. Douglas to the old Wil- mot proviso, showing that he wag in favor of that measure, &c. The [atelligencer deacants at length upon the national Interest and importance at present at- tached to New York politics, and the necessity of combining the elements of opposition, in that State, to Republicanism. 2 oe I> The Danville Register contradicts the re- Port concerning the overseer of Mr. Hairston shooting five negroes who were on the point of murdering him, and says there is no foundation ‘whatever fur the story. Just as we expected; for which reason we did not publish the yarn, al- theugh we saw it in nearly every exchange paper Wweopened. It read decidedly too*fisby for our use. —_—_______. I~ The cost of erecting Victoria Bridge at Montreal is stated at $7,000,000. The force en- gaged in itserection constituted asmallarmy. It consisted of 6 steamboats, 72 barges, beside seve- ralsmall craft. These measured about 12,000 tuns. The boats were manned by 500 men; in the two stone quarries were 450 men; and on the Various works as artizans and laborers, there were 2,000; in all 3,040 men. 10> Messrs. Richard Hawes, William Johnson, As- Payne, James Warren, and a dozen other Tesidents of Fayette county, Kentucky, who are the friends and supporters of Mr. Breckinridge for the next Presidency, having written him a letter requesting him to attend a mass-meeting of his fellow citizens and address them on the polit- ical topics of the day, Mr. Breckinridge has accepted the invitation, and the meeting is ar- pointed to take place near Lexington, on the Sth of September. It is to Le madea State affair. A grand barbacue is to be given, and a very large gathering of the people is anticipated. pao 2 3 ine ana ase! i We are at length in possession of the reso- lutions of the Great Powers with respect to the Syrian outlreak. They are framed with great caution, or rather, to speak plainly, on the strict- est principles of mutual distrust. If any one wishes to know what the Great Powers think of each other and by what close and stringent regu- lations they consider it necessary to circumscribe the free action of each of them, let him ponder “carefully over the terms of this convention, made on the representation of the Saltan that he desires the assistance of the European Powers, in order to restore tranquility to Syria. The great Powers undertake to send a force not exceeding 12,000 men to the disturbed province. Half of these troops are to be found by France, the rest by the the other Powers, as may be agreed upon. They &re to act in concert with the Commissioner of the Sultan; the Sultan must furnish them with pro- visions, and facilitate thelr march. The expe- dition is not to lsst more than six months. Wilson, seems to us to decide this Sewing Macbine Controversy, and effectually to overthrow the efforts of a combined monopoly to extort from the pyblic an exhorbitant and un- just price for an article which, to become the great lessing it is intended, should be introduced into wide-spread and general us-. The partizans of Mr. Douglas have done thelr best to prevent that desirable consummation; but invain. The leaders in the affairsof the Bell and Everett party in New York “have coalesced with the Douglas party there, simply to the end of securing the State’s vote against Lincoln; not because they have any more affinity for Dougiss, than for Breckinridge. They insist that the Douglas managers shall embrace {n the anion be- ing formed, the Breckinridge interest, on fair terms to the latter. That is to say, that the elec- toral ticket to be supported by the three anti. Lincoln parties in New York shall consist of ten Bell and Everett men, ten Breckinridge men, and fifteen Douglas men. Fernando Wood and his efficient army of per- sonal supporters make the same demand. If Fernando and his forces fail to act with the Doug- lasites—voting for a straight-out Breckinridge tcket instead—the latter will poll a beavier vote throughout the State than Douglas. This result ahead Is isso plain that Dean Richmond & Co. already realize it; and must therefore come to the terms proposed, if really caring to secure for Mr. Douglas a single electoral vote in the whole Union. The pressure upon Richmond & .Co. from the Douglasite rank and file, in favor of the proposed thorough union of all the anti-Lincoln interests in New York, is very great, and is working well indeed. a= Naval INTELLIGENCE.—The Saranac, Captain Ritchie, arrived at the Navy Yard, San Fran. cisco, on the 25th of July, where she will un- dergo repairs. Dear Star : Since my lest nothing of importance has transpired, save the State and county elections, which came off on the 7th inst. The State ticket of the popular democracy of Texes came out tri- umphant on the Rio Grande, and we will doubt! less hear that it has also been victorious he out the State. The election took place but. little local rivalry being manifested by our, loca} candidates, notwithstanding that several persons were in the canvass aspiring for the sheriffalty: _ The vote on the Rio Grande for State ofticers bas been, and at the next Presidential election will be, the smallest that has ever been cast since our counties were organized. Why this is, I shaller- deavor to explain: URjustly, and with little more than prejudice for a cause, it was sy by some one not long since that no poll be ed in the upper precincts of our county at e late elections, giving as a very logical reason that the-greater part of the i 0 on in that aarter are Mexicansand, hence, ill Voters, I shall not stop to explain the motive for this in- tended outrage on rights of citizens of Mexi- can origin; suffice it so say, that the late Cortinas war has wrought a climax {n the feelings of Mex- ican haters which are now beginning to find vent. That this mode of revenge should have been sug- gested and approved by men who formerly on election ie el gorge nrinne in legalizing Mexican votes, is atall strange when, in the words of Decker, I tell you that ‘We have here some ish and fantastic, will with a fe ; So ap! = ry ic, As Play Sfether; Others again we have like hungry lions, Fierce as wild bulls, untamable as flies.” Again, the Mexicans in general are not pfrrticu- larly anxious to cast their votes, good citizens as they may be, and when they do, it is sim, ly because they are carried to the polls. They fear the recriminations of Americans, sea this will account hasoafies fa= tha ama It must be said, however, fn Sia Re cue Proper authorities, that the upper precincts of the county all held polls and gave a majority for the ‘ht candidates. ne thing is to be remembered, however, that if anarchy and contention is to relgn among us, we know who have sown the seed of discord. On the 10th instant a grand mass meeting was held at the Market Hall of this cit » for the pur- pose of ratifying the nomination of Breckinridge and Lane for President and Vice President. The demonstration was certainly a grand one. The enthusiasm manifested for the democratic cause on that occasion, not only by speakers but by the ple he tet makes it indubitable that the Rie Gran eee at least, will do the thing “up brown”? for the candidates of the Union democ- racy. Some correspondent, writing from this cit to one of the New Mier oe rs, has said, wit more loquacity than know! ‘e of our political affairs, chat on the frontier, those who are not Douglasites are Bell-Everetites; but the late ratifi- cation meeting, attended py almost every citizen of Brownsville, has tacitly given the lie to this statement, far as the New Orleans Crescent may circulate. Deeds speak higher than words, and this is an instance. Our true position, politically and otherwise,-has more than once been mistaken; but this once, at least, we will assert that the reasoning of our traducer, addressed to sensible men, ‘ Falls on their heads like an inverted cone, Wanting its own base to stand upon.”’ Things in Mexico remain in their former state : little done, much lost, and nothing gained. Gen. Vidaurri, governor of the State of Nueva Leon, has, by his late acts, lost all the prestige which he formerly had. He bas been playing a high-handed game. He has enforced loans on merchants and rivate citizens, detained whole conductas pass- ing through the State, and done everything to jus- tify a movement which was set on fuot to depose him. ‘The general-in-chief of his forces, Juan Z: uagua, ‘was recently killed, which has thrown great con- sternation, not only among the Vidaurri clique, but also among the greater part of the Liberals, who claret his valour, staunchness, and mi]- itary skill, all of which he possessed in ahigh degree. [ tr: ite the following item of news concernin, affair from the newspaper pub- lished in Matamoras, Nexico : “ On the 30th ultimo D. Santiago Vidaurri left Monterey, accompanied by D. Juan Spo er and a considerable escort, taking the road to = waltillo, and having been preceded by several parties of the State forces, who, some days previous bad left for the same place. On the night of the 30th Sr. Vidaurri and bis men bivouaced at San Gregerio, where they were surprised at about two o’clock in the pete | by a sinall force said to number twenty men. Four of these separated from the rest and came up to the place where Vidaurri and Zuagua slept, where wasalso to be found the fa- mous Galvon. They heard their approach, but had no time left them for defence, and Zuagua was killed, having been struck by two balls. Vi- daurri is said to have escaped by prawiing under the cot, on which he had been lying, although some would make bim out to have been standing as sentinel in one of the dark corners of the room where they were attacked. It is guid that Vi- daurri’s bed received three shots.”” Zuagua was buried at La Cafullaina, and Vi- daurri continued bis march towards Saltillo. More anon. Excuse haste. Yours, ever, FRONTIERSMAN.
