Symmes (by their attorney, Henry S_ Coxe, Esq.,) that they will pay tanto the Treasury of the United States, under the 3d: ection of the’ Spirit ef the Merning Press. The Constitution argues at length in favor of the doctrine that Congress has power to protect Property in the Territories The Intelligencer devotes 2 column or so to a review of the sizvery question fn its relations to the various political parties. ————-e s 7A boy named Henry Nolan recently died in Brooklyn under singular clreumstances. Three years ago he worked in Thursby’s ropewalk, when the boys there struck for wages. Nolan re- fused to join the strike, and kept at his work. By this he incurred the enmity of the other boys, and two of them meeting him alone one day, In some part of the factory, tied him hand and foot and bound bint toa post, with his body in an in- verted position. He remained thus for about two hours, when he was discovered and released. He ‘Was seriously ill at the time and never recovered. Consumption and some disease of the bones en- sued, and, after a lingering iliness of three years, he died. fF" Three Congo negro boys, brought to New York city in the captured slaver Kibby, have been removed to the Eldridge street jail. They only escaped from being landed with the 412 other victims by secreting themselves beneath the forecastle floor. Here they lived for three days, on scraps of biscuit, and but for being accidentally discovered they must have perished, and tify seemed to prefer such a death to falling into the hands of the slavers. When discovered they were much afraid, but by kind treatment gradually became assured of their safety and more bold. They are bright, intelligent chil- dren, the oldest of whom is about ten years, and they exhibit great aptitude for repeating English ‘words and learning the names of things. Each of them writes his name in letters somewhat similar to those of the Chinese. $15,360, with interest from the 30th of September, and possession of the townghip oP land mentioned in said section of said act; and upon a modified proposition of the attorney for the parties, asking, on the payment of the money and interest, “to re- quiet and peaceful possession of the same.” Oblo. Among the latter was one that six miles Square in the centre of said lands should be re- served for erecting an academy under the direc- tion of the then Governor of the Territory north- west cf the Ohio, within five years from date of petent. This fact explains the trust encumbrance for the use of schools mentioned in last paragraph. The proposition of Symmes’s representatives was to obtain possession of the reserved six miles square, which, it seems, was never used for the Purpose indicated in the patent. The lands are now very valuable, being situated near the city Navat.—Advices from the Hartford, flag-ship of the East India squadron, state that she arrived at Shanghai from Hong Kong on the 25th of May. Consequently 1 was surprised tofind Hamilton a ruined city, as it were with every branch of business, completely Prostrated It {s estimatéd that not less than half the tenements and stores in Hamilton are for rent at the present moment, and that not less than ten thousand persons have left the city for «‘ the States” since December last. Probably the num- bets have been over-estimated, but itis certain that the city is in a bad way at present. And yet it has so remarkably a commanding position, at the head of the western extremity of Lake Ontario, and with such superior railroad connections by the Grand Trunk road, Toronto and Montreal way, and the Great Western road, towards the States, that it was considered five years ago to have the most brilliant prospects of any city in that part of the western country. * This decay is attributed to various causes, but the one dwelt on mainly is the crushing taxation brought about by the mismanagement of the governing of influential clzss. For instance, water works, by which the supply is brought from Lake Ontario, bave been constructed at such Cost that the city is at its wits’ end to pay even the interest upon the money. What the city hasdone, however, is done well. The buildings are su- tion to anything we can show in the States in the same proportion, being mainly of stone, and put up asif forall time. The same may be said of Toronto and Montreal. Toronto I found laboring to some extent under the same business depres- sion. Many houses were up for rent, but there seemed to be some improvements going on, es- pecially along the wharves. At Torontol took the lake steamer for Kingston, and found myself among a swarm of the tourists who are just now availing themselves of the round trip tickets issued by the Grand Trunk road to visit Niagara Fails, Canada folks were noticeable in the crowd indi- cated to some extent by acceut and peculiarities of costume. The Canadian bucks are all wearing canvas (sailcloth) shoes for coolness, and these being of snowy whiteness, givean exceedinghy barefooted look to the wearers till one gets used to the kink. They also patronize colored shirts with white col- lars, parti-colored hats, and other oddnesses of costume. These, in conjunction with sundry Great-Britainous peculiarities — leg - of - mutton whiskers, ruddy color, Perked-up noses, baggy trowsers, &c., &c., mark them quite distinctly from the’ somber-costumed Yankeedoodles on board. The Canadian girls wear the turban hats, as worn by their cousins of Albion, and have a wrinkle of their own for traveling purposes in the shape of pea-jackets of the coarsest and heavicst materials possible. At Kingston we made the usual change of beats, for the passage down the St Lawrence, the lake boats not being suitable for the river navigation. We entered among the Thousand Islands early in the morning, and there was a general tumble-up and turn-out of the passengers to see these world- renowned wonders of the upper St. Lawrence There was a leaden sky, however, with unfavor- able lights, and the islands didn’t show up well. I wes almost tempted to sympathize with Mr. Gradgrind, who was on board, and who made the following observation : Gradgrind (to wife of his bosom) —‘« My dear, let’s goto breékfast now, and be ready for the 5), Lt-seelng when we come to jt.” Wife —* Why, dear, we are in the most inter esting part” Gradgrind —‘‘Are we? (consulting bis guide- book hurriedly.) Why, so we are?’ Even Mr. Gradgrind though was forced to ad- mit that there was something in it as we com. menced shooting the rapids; and in going down “the Long Sault” more or less of the ladics felt, or imagined they felt, really sea-sick, from the tossing of the boat in the boiling current. ‘The excitement culminated at Lachine, when the canoe of the celebrated Indian pilot, Batiste, shot out from the shore and that worthy mounted. the steamer’s side, and taking bis stand by the quartette of robust steersmen required at the wheel in these troublous waters, entered upon the serious business of taking the steamer down the dangerous channel to Montreal. But these and other matters of interest on and about the St. Lawrence, have been so fully and graphically described by the Editor of the Star, in bis letters of last summer, that I shall venture to touch upon them but lightly. The Montrealers were busy with preparations for the reception of the Prince of Wales, triumphal arches (shain affairs of wood, covered with imusiin) were being erected at the corners of all the Principal streets; an immense ball-room of our Fourth of March- Inauguration sort, had been improvised; the shabby statue to Nelson was being touched up with fresh stucco and paint, and a general titriva- tion of the whole city was going on. To all out- side appearances the disposition todo boner to the Royal family was universal. An explosion which took place but a night or two ago at the meeting of the Montreal city councils, indicates, however, that this is only surface smoothness. The row broke out in consequence of a Proposi- tion by some patriotic member to substitute the name of Victoria Square for that of Commis- Sioners Square, and the. French Canadian op- Posing members are said to have expressed their dissent with extraordinary violence and bad tem. per. Montreal presents a thriving, business as- pect, although most of its shipping is now away, not yet returned from what iscalled the first of Spring voyage of the year, Quebec, which 1 reached by the St. Lawrence, bas mach more shipping visible about its wharves, and the display.of lamber in the acres of rafts moored along the banks is a wonderfal spectacle to the eye of the stranger, but on landing the difference between the live city of Montreal and the half alive city of Quebec 16 at once. manifest. ‘The business of the.Grand Trunk road at Point Levi, opposite Quebec, gives an animated. appear- ance to this locality, mueh more so than is notice able at any point of the city itself. The Grand Trunk seems to have done much to quieken in- dustry and open up new markéts and feeders botb for Canada and Maine, but is financially in a bad }. - way itself, having been, like the Hamilton water works, perhaps, of unnecessarily expensive con- struction and management. From Point Levi to Richmond, the junction with the Montreal branch. the road passes through a ‘rather uninviting fract of country,—cold, ‘ston y'Iand, wit: blasted , scathed trees, 2nd the houses were slight woes shanties, evidently recent. erections since th building of the road. We shot through miles of raspberries, the bushes being quite red with them, and at the stations numbers of ‘little girls, Frenchy in dress and dialect, came to the cur windows offering these berries in delicious freah- ness for sale, put up in unique little birch bark boxes.
