Tae Brace ix tHE Pvazic Scnoots — Mr. Editor: In the Star of this evening I see a further communication in to the use of the Bible in the public schools, which I beg leave to answer, notwithstanding the uncom: limentary manner in which I am addressed. ad that com- munication been received on a warmer day, it would have been as valuable as a whole load of Boston ice. Iam asked, ‘‘ How long freedom to Worship God endured unstained on the wild New England shore?” Answer—Until the present day, (namely, August 14, 1860) And it will endure while the peer a banner waves on Ameri- can soil. We will have no crowned heads, and no higher potentates to kick off crowns. As for Puritan reputation, | most respectfully submit that subject to the public, believing that all unbiased people will agree with me, that truer- hearted women, or better men, never lived Then the writer speculates upon the terms ** Repub- Hean’’-and “ Protestant.” { take my Webster's Dictionary, which | believe to be admitted by all to be the standard dictionary of the English lan- uage; I find the words defined as follows: rotestantism, the reformed religion. Repub- lican, petising to or consistent with a republic. Republic, a State governed by Ue apbcearoay phe elected by the citizens It was in this sense I use the worgis. If they have ‘negative’? or affirmative meaning, where js the authority to be found? Beware, sir, how you volunteer to ‘Pull the moat from your neighbor’s eye, while the beam may be found in — own.” I am invited, ‘First to find ont what the Bible is, if 1 know enough.” Yes, sir, [ can read English. The Bible, the which contains the Sacred Lent sage e of which there are seven different translations in English, besides one that was translated by one of the Popes. It would be a useless waste of time for every individual to translate the Bible for them- selves. We therefore ask which of those transla- tions have been made with the most care? His- tory answers the one called King James’s Bible. We therefore accept that as the most correct. Again, the Bible is the law of the Lord, “‘ which is perfect.” The Bible, in its quintessence, is this: ‘Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all ibys heart, and thy neighbor as thyself. Upon this rests all the law and the —— Secondly you ask, ‘‘How is {t to be identified ?”” 1 answer, “Ifany man lack knowledge, let him ask of God who giveth all things liberally.” Last of ali there comes that pbarisaical boast of a ‘‘Certai nty of faith.” You are of the “‘Seed of Abraham,” I su I should my pares you have traveled far in divine life, by the display you make of “‘Chris- tian graces.”’ Methinks I see the look of contempt with which your lip is curled as you think of those who do not believe as you do upon theolo; 'y- I suppose your prayers sound somewhat like the old gentleman’s we read of, namely: ‘Lord bless me and my wife, my son John and his ser! us LOCAL NEWS. i Though Tx Star fs printed on the fastest steam press in use south of Baltimore, its edition is 20 large as to require it to be put to press at an early hour; Advertisements, therefore, should be sent in before 12 o’clock m.; otherwise they may net appear unt!l the next day. Tue HvcksteRs’ Wacon License —Yester- day seven licensed hucksters were taken before Justice Donn upon a charge of runnin: wagons without license. They were not pre; to enter u a trial, and the cases were med till ‘uesday next. As the case seems to be important to this numerous class of our citizens, and others, non residents, engaged in this business, we make a extract from the act of 1854, on the sa : Pp. 13 of the laws of Sist council is “An act nse and regulate huckste:s,” in the follow- “That from and after the passage of this act, it shall not be lawful for any Person or | agensag eon resident or non resident, engaged ‘nm the business of buckstering, or of trading, bay- ing, selling, or dealing in Poultry, eggs, butter, wild game, vegetables, fruits. and other market stuffs, family provisions, horse feed or corn meal, or of vending, or retailing any other such articles, except fresh fish, within the limits of this city, unlegs said person or persons shall first obtain ‘trom the _— and Register a license therefor, for which license he, she, or they shall pay to this Cor; ion the sum of $15, which sum shall be in addition to the cost, hire, or rent of the stall or stand occupied, and of the license paid for the running of the wagon or other vehicle used in = ness as aforesaid. and which license rps authorize the person or persons to whom it is is- sued to use one wagon or other vehicle, and te occupy one stall or stand in the Center market, and one stall or stand in one of the other markets of this ay not held on the same dav as the Cen- = brag ; the selection of < —_ to ty come y the person or persons applying for, and clearly Specified in the body of t : lisenss. For each and every additional wagon or other vehicle usea and for each and every additional stall or stand occupied in either of the several markets of this city, a separate license shali be required. All licenses granted under this act shall expire on the Ist day of January of each year.’ ‘The second section of this act repeals the first section of the old act of 1553. For some time this act was con- strued to permit bucksters to use one wagon in their business without paying an additional tax, but that constraction has been set aside, and hence the contest. The defendants argue that the horse and wagon used by them ought to be as free from tax as the tools in a mechanic’s work shop, and ask why they should be made to —_ two or three times for the ape? ey . They regard the old con- struction as intention of the law-make s, who, taking the view that, as their horse and wagon were essential to their business, for the privilege of which, they were licensed, these were included in it. That, as the horse and ‘wagon would be assessed in the personal Property, it would be un- fair to tax them a third time. That, as the horse and i were not engaged in the public carry- , they ought not to be taxed as ons. that were. And they hold that the law provides for the licensing of the ‘additional stand or stands” and the “ additional wagon,” clearly im- Plies that the first were included in the license. Potice MatrEns.—Before Justice Barnaclo — ‘Tom Welsh, hackman, was brought up to answer several grave charges. A member of Tom’s fam- rd had surprised bim in company with a colored € rlatacertain house, and desired him to come ome. Tom wason aspree and wouldn’t; and the colored girl, whose name is Sarah vis, cursed profanely at the person who had come to fetch Tom away. In the magistrate’s office, Tom interrupted the testimony by avering with a large sized oath that the witness was a d—d liar, and When remonstrated with by the officer, insinuated with many more oaths that the police were a set of paupers and bumbugs, and that our local mag- istracy, from the Mayor down, was a complete fizzle; that the entire local authorities, without exception, were a set of contemptinie beggars, and not worth ‘‘shucks”’ When the magistrate informed him that he was fined $10 and costs for nity, Tom pitched into that official witha rade of profane abuse calculated to show that pv en eo iaraey more infamous than the 4 was ing on to” ve his assertions, ‘when the Justices ecotmitted bine to jail for con- tempt of court. Sarah Davis was fined $5 and costs for ber portion of the affair. The editor of the Star has had occasion to cause a mile of it to isd gi up, and now uses it for various purposes; and, also, is so pleased with it as that he is having another mile of it built. He finds that any farm hand can make 350 feet (running) of ita day, and that it takes but about fifty feet 'd measure of inch Beak to the panel of sixteen feet to make it; and, further, that two hands, with a pair of oxen, can place in position (set up) perhaps a mile of it aday. It cannot fail to last much longer than an ordinary post and board fence, as its uprights are not inserted in the soil. ASzrtovs Loss —Saturda night, a gentleman residing in the Northern Liberties, went to mar- ket. having in his possession about $140; met with some lively friends and took a drink or two, which rather Intoxicated him. He displayed his cash to his companions at the drinking places freely. After staying his time out, he started for home, and was accompanied by two or three of his companions. After his arrival, upon lookin; for bis cash, he discovered that he was minus all except about $5. Such Incidents should serve to urge 7 young gentleman, when he has “‘a pocket full o’rocks’’ and meets lively company ,to obey the Scriptural injunction, “Watch and be sober.”?
