THE EVENING STAR. THE LITTLE BOY THAT DIED. The late Dr. Chalmers is said to have been the author of the following beautiful lines, written ‘on the occasion of the death of a young son whom he greatly loved : 1am all alone in my chamber now, And the miduight hour is near, Aad the faggot’s oraek. and the clock’s dull tiok, Are the only sound: ar A over my score gsi weet ings of sadness glide ; Por my hea tand my eyes are full when I think Of the littie boy that died. Field, lying at the dock between Bates and Randolph exploded. and the boat was a wreck. A mass cks and planks was all that remained to be discovered of the tug, and her timbers, cab- ins, portions of her boiler shell, flues, wood, &c., were lying in heaps upon the dock by, and strewn about the neighbor ‘ises for the distance of three or four hu: feet. Outside timbers of the dock had been thrown several feet out of lace, and some lifted high yoy dd ‘wood ‘here Were upon the tug at the time of the explosion seven persons, viz: the mate, Remo Dumont; the wheelsman, Wm. McKenzie; cs or Eaton Owen, of Newport; two firemen. one a negroand one of whom we understand was George Abbott; the cook, Mrs. Morey, and a negro boy named Hoover—seven in all, and five of whom are killed. Mra. Morey was thrown u the dock Sbeis not much a pet one side of her face bet burned, and one side and arm bruised. The fi mate was found und ponad sore wood near by, still alive, but he died im: ately before or just after be had been got out. He was scalded, and cut, and bruised. G e Abbott was blown several rods away and over a low building. He was dead wheu found, being terribly cut and scalded. The boy Hoover was a! found dead on the dock. He @ severe cut in the forehead. It may be men- tioned as showing the immense force of the explo- sion, that the ight of the safety-valve on the engine of the tug—a solid iron ball, weighing, probably, seventy-five or eighty pounds—w-s found embedded in the earth Sader the sidewalk on the east side of Bates street, between Atwater and Woodbridge. The spot where it was found is at least five hundred feet from the place where the a occurred. The ball bad ro through the two-inch plank of the sidewalk, and had penetrated. through eighteen inches of the sotl.? Fe eee Sea eee Latest From Cuina —We have Hon; Kong beer to the 7th of May. The editor urges further conciliatory measures, declaring thet every consideration that shouid de. cide the action of great minds demands a peace- fal solution of |aase ‘ing difficulties. Nothing fur- ther bas transpired of the progress of n tinticns! if any, with the Chinese Government. Chusan ‘was occupied after some | ypreeyed negotiations, and the Chinese were told they would be treated amicably if no resistance was made. The Proposal ‘was at once acceded to, and the 67th and 9th regi- ments, with 400 marines and detachments of ar- tilery and engineers, were soon after landed. Tux Mitrogp Rossery anv Svicipe.—At Mil- ford, (N. H.,) on Tuesday, a man named Samuel Scripture was detected in stealing from the ticket master’s drawer, at the Wilton ra{iroad depot. Oa arrest and examination, a pocket-book containing at five dollars, including a marked three-dollar bill, which he had just taken, was found upon him. He confessed that he had been in the habit of taking money for a year or more, by means of false keys, to the amount, as near as he could judge, of four hundred dollars. His wife. after hearing the news, was soon missing. and was traced to the river, where her bonnet was found upon the bank.
