THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON OITY: THURSDAY Spirit of the Morning Press. The Constitutron treats wpon the virtual Douglis and Republican fusion which it contends is pro- posed by Forney’s Philadelphia Press. It also argues that the presidential contest lies between Breckivridge and Lincoln. The Intetligencer gives the second article of its current series on ‘Parties and their principles’ — the first hoving analyzed the motives of the Con- etitutional Union party, and the present being de- voted to a discussion of the position of the Repub- cans. eee U7 Mr. Edmond Armant.a gentleman of one of the oldest families in Louisiana, committed sui- cide recently by cutting his throat with a pocket knife. The cavse was supposed to be distress from incurable ophtalmta. 1 Drowned, oa the Im the Red River, near De Kalb, Bowie county, Texas, Charles S. Bell, eldest son and only re- maining child of Commodore Charles H. Bell, U.S Navy, in the Sith year of his age. Mr Beil, atthe time of his denth, was engaged as civil engineer on the Memphis and El Paso Rail- road, Texas. A Nsw Campaign Parer.—This morning, the ‘first number of Ths Union Guard made its appear- ance. It is the new campaign paper of the Bell and Everett party, to be published in this city weekly until the end of the canvass, by N. D. Larner & Co., at the printing office of Mr. George S. Gideon, on Ninth street. Its editorial depart ment is under the direction of the Bell and Everett National Committee, we apprehend. U7 As we have stated, terrible civil war is now raging in Syria. The Druses, aided by ‘Turks, Moslems, Arabs and others, have simulta- neously attacked and massacred the native Chris- tlans. Their villages have been burned, and every violence that barbarism could invent has been visited upon them. It appears that the war is the result of a long and violent animosity, and that unless interrupted it will be one of extermin- - hanks to the pub- lishers, who send us, through Taylor & Maury, of this city, the following new publications, viz: Lovel, the Widower; a novel by W. M. Thack- eray, with illustrations. New York, published by Harper & Brothers, Fraaklin Square, 1960 This is the last novel of Thackeray published in this country, and being unknown to most Ameri- can readers, will of course be universally read here, as no American novel reader now falls to read each succeeding publication from T.’s pen Also, Castle Richmond; a novel by Anthony Trollope, just issued from the Harpers’ presses. It 16 equal in most respects to any work of the same popular author so far republished in the United States. Also, the first volume of Euripides, (in Greek,) being a portion of the now well known series— “Harpers? Greek and Latin Texts.” No European bouse, in these times, gets up better cheap editions of the classics than do the Brothers Harper. In that branch of their business, as in their scientific publications, they are public benefactors indeed Taylor & Maury also send us Leonard Scott & Co.’s republication of the June, 1560, number of Blackwood—always welcome upon our book table. Tus Hon. Wituiam A. Ricnarpson.—We | Larrers oF THz PRESIDENT AND THE QUEEN ON learn from a gentleman, formerly in Congress from Pennsylvania, that the Hon. Wm. A. Rich- ardson, of Illinois, does not hesitate to proclaim openly that as between the election of Breckin- ridge and Lincoln, he prefers the triumph of the latter. We make this statement with pain; be- cause, from Mr. Richardson’s antecedents, we had hoped that he would have been the last of all the Northern supporters of Douglas who would willingly affiliate with the Republican party. We have frequently taken occasion to point out the fact that Douglasism is but one of the roads to Republican party-ism, and this proclamation of Mr. Richardson’s proves unmistakably the cor- rectness of that impression. ee EXAMINATION INTO THE CoNnDITION OF WEST Pornt Mititary Acapemy.—By direction of the President, Major Robert Anderson, of the first artillery, and Capt. A. A. Humphrey, of the corps of topographical engineers, have been detailed from the Army as members of the commission created by the act of June 21, 1560, to examine into the erganization, system of discipline, and course of instruction of the United States Military Academy. In addition to the above, the commis. sion will consist of two members of each House of Congress. Senators Davis and Foote, and Rep- resentatives Stanton or Curtis, and Winter Davis, bave been designated to act in such capacity. Tue Praric Printinc.—There is said to be no truth in the report that the House Printer has sus- pended operations, as the Attorney General has not yet rendered an opinion as to the construction of the law reducing the prices to be paid for the printing. The report of the Covode Committee makes eight hundred and forty printed pages. Of the one hundred thousand ordered by the House, thirty thousand will be ready for delivery in the course of a few days. Congress, at the late session, ordered printing involving an expense of at least $500,000. 5 oe Conngcticut.—We have reliable information satisfying us that the State Committees of the Democratic and American parties of Connecticut have agreed upon a programme under which a portion of their respective electoral tickets are withdrawn from the field Jand the other portions will berun asa jointelectoral ticket. Ifsuccessful, each portion will vote (in the Electoral College) its own sentiments—possibly voting together, if that course proves necessary to compass the defeat of Lincoln. ——~—— Tux AcricutturaL Rerorts or tHe Patent Orrice.—The Senate Printer on Monday deliv- ered to the binder ten thousand of the three hun- dred thousand copies of the agricultural part of the Patent Office Report ordered by the House. Twenty thousand copies additional will be ready in afew days. The printing of this document was delayed by the action of the House in post- poning the order until the close of the session. The Senate edition of the report has already been printed, bound, and delivered Beier OSES Tue Paracvay Commission —The commissicn to setile the claims under the Paraguay treaty will probably be in session two weeks longer The testimony for the American claimants is not yetalltaken. It includes much valuable infor- mation relative to the natural advantages and productions of that country. The Republic of Paraguay is represented by J. M. When, therefore, the public duties for the performance of which the Prince undertakes the voyage across the Atlantic to her Majesty’s North American Colontes shall be concluded, both the consider- ation above referred to, and the natural desire on the part of the Prince to visit some of the institu- tions and some of the most prominent objects of interest in the United States, will prompt his Royal Highness on bis return from the Jpper Province of Canada to direct his route through a rtion of that great country; and that route will nelude a visit to the important city of New York.
