THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON OITY: TUESDAY... ...... -..-...+« Jume 26, 1960, pul vorably upon the President's protest against the inquisition of the Covode Committee, the House of Kepresentatives The Intelligencer ts devoted to Congressional Proceedings and news. WASHINGTON Ni —— Brecxineipse axp Lane —Though the temper of the Douglasites, as manifested at Baltimore last week, betokened their disposition to work as much mischief to the Democratic sible, fortunately their power to that end is by no means commensurate with the spirit of revenge actuating them. Thus, they cannot subtract votes from Breckiaridge and Lane in any State otherwise sure for the Democratic ticket in November next, sufficient to endanger its success there. They may, possibly, give Maryland to Bell & Everett, and may compel the Democracy to make « vigor- ous canvass in Louisiana, owing to the fraction of votes they might otherwise subtract from the Democratic ticket there; while they may also cause Kentucky to cast a pluraiity vote for the Bell ticket. There their power for mischief in otherwise probably Democratic States will surely end AND GOSSIP. So far as the Middle and debatable Northwest- ern States are concerned, the Democratic ticket will doubtless run better there than any other that could have been nominated; the names of | Sbout7 o’clock. : eae both Breckinridge and Lane being towers of tot Strength {n all of them—Indiana, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Indeed, they were clearly se! lected to the end of strengthening the Democratic party’s cause in those particular States. So far os Iilinois is concerned, it is already clear that Lin- coln will beat Douglas there from six to ten thou- tand yotes—leaving him without the slimmest conceivable chance of obtaining a single electoral vote in the Presidential election. sane RE ANOTHER Protest FxoM Tur PREsipeNt.—in a » TBO, the House, yesterday, the Speaker laid before the Barometer at the Smithsonian at 7a.m., (cor- dody another message from the President of the | T@ited for temperature,) 30.2 United States, in relation to the action of the - ot Covode Investigating Committee, and reiterating | New Booxs.—We are indebted to the publish- his former protest on that subject.
