THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON CITY: MONDAY. April 30, 1860, Spirit of the Morning Press. The Constitution, under the head of «* Newspa- per Immorality,” deprecates the prevailing prac- tice among self-styled “enterprising” papers of getting up bogus news. It alludes particularly at this time, to the burden of Sulealined eatiete- representation which it says the telegraph wires bave groaned beneath tank tha uictiogt ot the Charleston Convention, all intended for the news- Paper press. ‘The Intelligencer is devoted to news and mis- cellany. : IL? Lincoln, Mayor of Bostor, Scott, U.S. A., are at Willards’. i The New York Commercial Advertiser speaking of the effect of the account of the great fight on that community, says: “The ery of the newsboy met the ear of steady ee ore just as they were emerging from their homes for the purpose of pursuing the labors of the day. The papers were carefully ex- amined to see if the news was authentic, and to avoid the hoax which was played upon the people on Wednesday night, by the issue of a us extra. The price Temasted for the valuable in- formation was duly paid, and the recipient seated «--« Hon. F. and Lieut. Col. himself to the details. Business was sus- pended asifa calamity had hay . The merchant could not pursue bis business or read his letters until he satistied himself about the fight. The clerk must read the details before he could be in a fit mood forthe labors of the day, and all classes, with hardly an exception, gave themselves up to the porasal of the important in- formation, which, when carefully conned, dis- cussed and commented upon still occupied their minds to the exclusion of the more important topics of the day ” OxyoENated Bitters, a Sure Cure For Dys- persia.—The story of this remarkable medicine and its success in obstinate cases of op tony Asthma, and general debility of the system, laces it among the most wénderful discoveries fn medical science, and has given ita reputation far beyond aay et: known for these com- plaints, in all their lous forms. A day.ortwo since I notified you that the real fight was upon the platform. After the most exciting debate and time I ever saw, the Convention adjourned to-day to meet again at 4p. m.; having referred back both platforms, (of the mejority and minority of the committee,) together with Bayard’s proposi- tion. The test vote was on entertaining Mr. Big- ler’s motion to refer back—152 yeas to 151 nays. The motion having been entertained, was carried byan overwhelming majority. The Douglas men fought the motion to the death, as being equiva- lent to fnstructions to report back Bayard’s resolu- tions or something equivalent tothem; which was the end nud aim of the anti-Douglas party in the Convention. ‘The committee, in their anticipated report, will surely do that thing, rely on it, cad then we shall have another struggle as severe as that just ended. I entertain no fears of the result whatever. A satisfactory platform will be adopted, and Doug- las will never receive the support of a majority of the Convention. A minority of the Georgia del- egation—Alex. Stephens’s men—are endeavoring to bolt their virtual instructions. If sustained by the Convent'on in the wish to be permitted to do so, they might swell Douglas’s vote up to four or five more than a majority; but I entertain no apprehension that the Convention will accommo- date them. Situated as I am just now, it is impossible that I can write the Star at length this afternoon. Guthrie's stock, and Dickinson’s for Vice Presi- dent, continues to be in the ascendant here. CORRESPONDENT. wargeseiiasbemaie Mr. Pucw’s Mu RESENTATION OF SENATOR Hunter —We have not yet seen in print the de- tails of the effort made by Senator Pugh on Friday last in the Charleston Convention, to convict Sen- ator Hunter of having favored squatter sover- eignty, by quoting that gentleman’s speech of the z2ith of February, 1854,0n the Nebraska-Kansas bill, to that end. Mr. Pugh could only have quoted a single paragraph of that speech for that Purpose (the first we quote below) taking due care toconceal from his hearers the paragraphs thereof following immediately thereafter; which entirely disprove the allegation of Mr. P. Below, we quote every word said by Senator Hunter in the speech in question bearing directly or indi- rectly on squatter sovereignty, that the public may see at a glance that injustice was, indeed, done, in charging Senator H. with ever having favored the heresy of Senator Douglas : ‘But it has been often said by those who admit that Congress has the power of governing the Territories, that it is a power to be exercised, not in reference to the rights of the States, but in re- ference to the good and welfare of the people of the Territories. Now, if in exercising this power we are to be confined to the single consideration of the good and welfare ofthe Territories, then I say the whole subject of the government ought to be left to the people of the Territories. That isthe true American principle. Ifthe only considera- tion which is to apply to their government be the good and welfare of the people of the Territories, then they ought to determine all questions in re- ard to their domestic institutions and laws. But in iny opinion the government of these Territo- ries ought to be administered with the double object of securing the rights of the States as well as those of the Lape of the Territories, and to these last should be given all the rights of self- government, which are consistent wit the limita- tion that they shall not interfere with the equal rights of the Xrates, or violate the provisions ofthe Constitution With those limitations all the pow- er that could ey be given to the people of a ‘Territory oughttobegiventhem. All that portion of the Layard which is to be exercised with a view to their interests ought to be exercised as they wish it. That, in my opinion, is tbe true princi- Pit know we have most high, distinguished, and respectable authority for the opinion thet the peo- le of the Territories have a sort of natural right exercise all power within those Territories. It is not my purpose to raise an issue upon that qnes- tion. I do not mean to argue it. I do not wish to raise an issue with the friends of this bill, with those whom I am assisting. and who are assisting me to pass this measure. Nor will I do it unless it should be absolutely necessary, which is nut now the case. For happily the bill is so framed that itcan be maintained not only by those who entertain such opinions as J have referred to, but by those also who entertain opinions like my own.” be Tre Weatuer.—The following report of the weather for the morning is made from the Amer- lean Consolidated Telegraph Line to the Smith- sonian Institution. The second floor is used for storing corks, &c. Some idea may be formed ef the extent of this business when we state that the cost of the corks which we saw piled up bale upon bale, is reckoned by hundreds, and the bottles ‘ked in hogs- heads, of which there is literally a yard full, by thousands of dollars; that they keep always not less than thirteen heavy draught horses, which are models of equine strength and beauty; and that on run crap d from six to ten wagons—some making three trips a day. The exhibition at Forrest Hall, this evening, of colossal photographs, beautiful statuary, &c., is worthy the patronage of our citizens, and we hope tosee a full house.
