We take it, George's official head falls in the basket by sundown to-day. = Crarieston, April 28. Editor Star: Yesterday George Saunders sent long appeals to many Democratic leaders in Washington, to use their influence to induce the Seuth to accept Douglas. A few hours afterwards 2 Georgia delegate received a dispatch from Mr. Toombs, one of those apps. to by Saunders, saying, ‘The South should insist on a sound plat- form and the nomination of a sound southern man on it, otherwise leave the Convention in a solid body. Show this to Georgia delegation ” Mk. Hunter GRrossiy Misrerresentep.—Sen- ator Pugh, yesterday, in the Charleston Conven- tion, 1s said to have quoted Mr. Iunter’s speech of the 2ith February. 1859, on the Nebraska- Kansis bill, to prove that gentleman a squatter sovereignty man; thus doing him great injustice Want of room prevents us from to-day showing— as we shall do on Monday next—most conclu- sively, from the same speech, that no other American statesman is more firmly principled against the heresy of Senator Douglas. = Tuz CaarLeston Convention. [Correspondence of The Star.} Cuareston, S. C., April 26—p. m. Dear Star: We have had another very ex- citing day of it—indeed much more exciting than any that had occurred here. The excitement bas been over the platform proceedings in the plat- form committee, where the real battle involving the question of the nominations, is being fought. It seems to me that every delegation has offered a diiterent platform for the committee’s considera- tion, and it is already clear that no one of th will be accepted, as a whole, by that body. Each delesation has got to instructing its platform com- mittee-nan upon every question arising in their consultations; until no sooner isa question started than an adjournment is proposed and carried, to enable some committee-man or other to consult his delegation as to how he shall vote upon it The resuit is interminable delay, of course; bid- ding fair to defeat the possibility of having a majority report made, the Lord knows how long- Many of the northern delegations are getting heartsick of this system of doing business, more particularly as they Lave steamboats under charter that are to mulct them in damages at the rate of from $3) to 3500 per diem, additional for every day they are kept here after Saturday next. Tius, instead of finding it the cheaper mode of attend- ing the Charleston Convention, these who have chartered steamers to that end are likely to find that it will cost them ‘‘a pretty penny’ besides what should be the entire cost of their trip coming by rail and pay while here, the arleston hotels’ extravazant c large of $5 per day, without extras. All eyes are on the New York delegation, which is evidently playing, vety earnestly, the game of “heads | win, tails you lose.’ The heavy vote for the admission of the Richmond- Cagger delegation, it now turns out, wes the result of a positive pledge of Richmond & Co. to sustain a platform acceptable to the South, from whence the bulk of the Democratic elec- toral vote isto come In November. Richmond & Co. consented that Croswell should be the New York platform committee-man only in order to satisfy the South of the integrity of that pledge ef theirs. And the ruse succeeded; for Croswell (personally) possesses the entire confidence of the South, which he deserves. But having been ad- mitted, Richmond & Co. seek to turn their backs on their pledges, and proclaim the purpose of making a Northern Democratic party irrespective of the South and her rights; assum ing tocontrol the action of Mr. Croswell in the committee. Coch- rane, at the head of the Guthrie men of the dele- gation, aud Croswell at the head of the Dickin- son men, are doing their best to break Richmond & Co.'s control of the delegation; and at this hour yesterday I thought they had succeeded in ing; but a subsequent vote of the delegation. 0 23, instructing Croswell to reverse his vote on the platform, satisties me that I then reckoned without my host. Croswell did reverse that vote, leaving the plat- form (agreed on by a vote of 15 to 15—a mixture of Bayard’s proposition and the Missouri plat form) to be reported by a vote of 17 yeas to Ibnay Had it not been so that the change of Croswell's vote could not defeat a majority report, 1 do not believe that he would have changed it. The dif. ficulty between Richmond and Cochrane on this subject ran so high ina public hall in the Mills House, not long since, as tu attract the attention of all by-standers—C denouncing Richmond for a faithless man, without personal character or principle; and Richmond retorting with curses against the South and the National Admin’stra- tion. The upshot will be that Cochrane will here- after act with the Wood interest in New York city, backed by three-fourths of what has hercto- fore been known as the Soft Democratic party of the city. Wood's estimate is that the change in tue position of Cochrane and his friends wi!l in- sure the defeat cf any Douglas Presid: in the city and county of New York ant:-Democratic party States run Douglas) by a majority of at least 30,000; Which will, in turn, lasure the defeat of any such ticket, in the whole State, by at least from 50.000 to 100,000 votes ! The only point in it (the platform reported) upon which I have time to comment, or that Is of particular interest at this time, is the plank with Teference to slavery in the Territories—upon which really hinges all the constitutional rights of the South with reference to slavery, involved in the National contest of 1560 in November next. Whit is it?) Simply the aifirmance that the Democretic party will maintain the constitutional rights«f the South, as those rights have been affirmed by the Supreme Court of the United States. The Douglas interest on the platform committee op- pesed its adoption, te the death—fizhting for the Cincinnati platform, with the addition of the Dred Scott decision, as Douglas proposes to inter- pret that. That is te say, that the Dred Scott de- cision simply affirms that the negro is not, and cannot be, a citizen; and (in their construction of the Cincinnati platform) claiming authority ia Territorial Lezisiatures elected by instruments of Emigrant Aid Societies, or what not, to exclude slavery from United States Territories. There is really danger to-night that some few dclegates from slavebolding States may desert th: South in thisemergency; voting in the Convention against the platform as to be reported. Not more than adozen in all, however, can pessibly doso; and their defection will be more that made up for. or 1 am greatly mistaken, by Northern votes for it— the platform as reported. If the Southern delega- tions be permitted to split on the platform, divis- ions of Northern delegations—twice as numerous as the Southern splitters—will claim the same Privilege. So, I have no fear now, that the plat- form to be reported can be defeated. Yet, if by any possible chance that may occur, we shall have ‘music’ here. Nota Single State certain to vote for any Democratic Presidential candidate on any platform, opposes this platform. There may be, possibly, here and there, a vote against it from two or three such States; but such defections will only go to shown, by contrast, the overwhelming sentiments of the States voting for it Mr. Slidell, who is quite an imperious man, by the by, .:safd to have cursed Dean Richmond ‘up bill and down dale” to-day, as an unmiti- gated scoundrel, better fitted to grace a peniten- tiary cell than a position in control of the New York delegation in the Convention. Richmond, however, pockets what Slidell is reported to have 8 id of him, as he pocketed what Cochrane doubt- less said to him. My belief is that the platform to be reported will carry in the Convention, unless there be far more treachery in southern delegations than I now apprehend CORRESPONDENT. ee c ine weeks old was smcthered to adi a's touther bed on Monday, in St. Louis, having rolled out of its mother's arms on its face.
