That is, about the platform embraced in the Senate’s Democratic caucus resolutions. Noses have been counted, and a majority of fifty votes for it are confidently calculated on by its advocates. We are all at sea with reference to the probable candidate. All on that head that is certainly known, is that Douglascannot in any event obtain a two-third vote of the Convention. Hence the evident desire of many of his supporters, in and outside of the Convention, to bave matters so managed, in the consideration and disposition of the platform question, as to drive from three to five Southern States out of the Convention before it begins to ballot for a Presidential nominee. They will, however, fail woefully in the accomplish ment of this trick; as the Democratic States will beat them (the Republican-party States) out cf water in making the platform. The state of tixed determination on the part of the South not to abide the nomination of Douglas manifested in that meeting, is but of a piece with all | have seen since arriving here. Its etfects on the Nat'onals from the North is very great. ‘Thus, many Northern delegates who came here with secret or avowed leanings towards Douglas, are according to previous resolution, adjourned until Tuesday next, the ist day of May. Hovse.—Mr. Smith, of Va., rose to a point of order, charging Mr. Bingham with having libeled the State and the people of Virginia, in his speech of yesterday. He then read the portion of the speech referred to, which charged most of the people of Virginia’ with being narrow, bigoted, and selfish in their views, and that of this class be (Mr. Smith) was one. Mr. D. Smith desired the gentleman to retgact this offensive janguage, or otherwise he should denounce him as a willful calumniator. Mr. Bingham said the gentleman’s declaration was not likely to cause him to strike outa fact of of history. What he said he stood by.
