[Correspondence of The Star.] Cuariestonx, Monday night, April 23. This day has been a very exciting one here, the real business of the occasion baving got fairly under way. All were dissppointed at the slim attendance of outsiders in the galleries of the Convention hall. I counted but fourteen ladies in the gallery set apart for the especial accommo- dation of the fair sex, and they are said to have been altogether ladies who have come hither with their husbands, members of the Convention, and other attending from a distance. The gallery for males, too, was not much more than half fall, which may be owing to a squabble which Mr. Chairman Smalley has got into with the “third estate’’ relative to their tickets of admission and positioninthehall. Heis decidedly a ma! apropes gentleman. That is to say, he lacks readiness and tact, essentially in coming to conclusions about his arrangements, and energy and decision to carry them out. Mr. Flournoy, who acted to-day as temporary Chairman—without any power other than about that of assigning the floor, is a Douglas man per sé, but is under strong anti-Douglas instructions, which he has pledged himself, it is said, to carry out from first to last. Otherwise, he could not have obtained that position; which, under the circumstances, was a tub thrown to the Douglas whale—a bait to keep them quiet while their can- didate is being scientifically knocked in the head, The contest of to-day’s three-hour session was over the New York contested case. Fisher, of Virginia, who is credited with being the Wise fagleman in the Virginia delegation, managed Wood’s cause; while John Cochrane, of New York, managed that of the Cagger and Richmond side; and he managed it badly enough for his clients, as the sequel showed; for Cochrane, with Flournoy’s help, beat him out of water on every turn. Hunter’s friends, by the by, are alarmed at the fact that the majority of the Virginia delegation agreed, for the sake of propitiating their Wise colleagues, to sustain the claims of the Wood delegation. They now see that the latter cannot be admitted, and are not to be trusted for Hunter, if admitted; and, further, that the pertinacity with which Mr. Fisher fought for Wood to-day has got big Dean Richmond’s dander up toa point likely to make him, the real dictator In the councils of his (Soft) delegation, do bis best from first to last to prevent the vote of the Empire State from being given for Hunter in any event. It is settied that Caleb Cusbing is to be the permanent President of the Convention. The Douglasites on the committee on organization did their best first to contirm Flournoy in the position, and then, as a dernier resort, to place Orr, of South Carolina, there. But in vain; they were fairly cut-voted by a considerable majority by their anti-Douglasite colleagues, who concentrated on Cushing, the ablest, as well as, perhaps, the bit- terest and mest confirmed anti-Douglas delegate from all the non-slaveholding States. I do not think that Hunter stock bas advanced to-day. The Virginia movement for Wood has damaged it with the New York vote, zsexplained above; aud the expediency men from various Northern States are running around protesting thetr inability to carry Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Indiana with him, though professing to re- gard him as the man the Democracy should elect to the Presidency, by all means, if they could. ‘Though no formal communications between the parties have taken place, the Pennsylvanians have certainly urged that argument on the Hunter del- egates, and are endeavoriig to induce them to take Breckinridge in H.’sstead. So far they have made little progress in that work, though some of them claim that seven southera delegations will take either Guthrie or Breckinridge, as Pennsyl- vania and New Jersey may elect between those two gentlemen. Of course the Douglasites claim the New York Soft delegation. My information, however, leads ime to believe that that claim is worth no more than their ridiculous claim that Georgia, Vir- ginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee will vote for Douglas somewhere between the fifth and tenth ballots. Dougtas is in a decided minority in the New York delegation, and if driven to the wall. mark it, the majority of it will combine upon Guthrie—making him a very formidable competitor for the nomination. If Kentucky would drop him and consent to go for Breckin- ridge, the latter's chance, as matters now stand, would be best of all the aspirants. But with Kentucky and New York against him, and a considerable portion of Pennsylvania amd New Jersey really favoring Guthrie, bis prospect does not strike me just now as being as bright as bis advocates claim. The Missouri delegation are having a hot time of it. It is said that four of its members who pledged themselves up to their eyes in their State convention to go from first to last against any sjuatter soverciznty candidate, now proclaim in their delegation meetings the purpose of voting for Douglas, and more than one absolute fight among them is expected to grow out of the course of those gentlemen, their anti- Douglas colleagues being exceedingly wrothy on the subject. I be- lieve that the vote of the delegation will rest in great part with the course that Judge Crum, of S:. Louis, may take. He isan original Douglas man, but so far is understood to hold it to be his y to carry out the instruetions he voluntarily Fcepted as the law for the government of his course in the Convention. The extreme anti-Douglas men of the South are most vehement this evening in their comments on the recreant Missourians, in whose behalf it is alleged that there is a letter from Douglas in Charleston, offering to accept the nomination on the Missouri—intensely anti-squatter-sovereignty —platform, if thus tendered to him. I place no contidence in any such story, because if such a letter were exhibited here, it would only serve to embitter the South more intensely against Doug- las than at present. hen, he would be regarded by them as being simply a most intense and reck- 1-ss ottice-seeker, willing to be anything whatever f+ office—abolitionist when seeking reélection to the Senate, and intensely pro-slavery to catch southern votes here. I de not see how the Convention can get to bal- loting for a Presidential candidate before ‘Thure- day. The Committee on Organization will to. motrow doubtless report in favor of the adoption of the rule of the Cincinnati Convention, author- izing the majority of each delegation to deter- mine how the whole vote of the State shall be cast. That will be opposed by the Douglas in- terest, who may be from fifteen to twenty-five votes stronger if it be rejected, than with it in operation. When the question comes up, the de- bate upon it bids fair to bea long one. Next, there will be an interminable debate upon the New York contested delegation ques- tion, which though a clear case in my judgment, will give rise to the utterance of an ocean of words, consuming at least half a day if not more. The case is so plain ‘hat it must finally be set- tled upon its merits, though there will be more Or less votes upon it dictated by hopes and fears with reference to the probable vote of the delega- tion upon the all-absorbing question After that will come up for consideration the Proposition to adopt the platform before nom!- are endeavoring which they will with a fair prospect of suc- hough | doubt the fact. All the Douglas iaterest will vote with the extreme South upon it, it is believed. in the hope of driving Missiesippi, Texas, Georgia and South Carolina from the Convention before the nomination be made. The Douglas men in authority herelevidently despair of ever gettinga two-thirds vote for him, and seem to me to be into the presidency through a disruption of the Party in which he will receive enough electoral votes to get before the U. S. House of Representatives. Undeg such circumstances, there is bound to be along and earnest debate upon the proposition to make the platform before making the candidates—the Breckinridge, Guthrie, Lane and Hunter interes:s nating the candidate. The South to effect an arrangement through act as a unit upon it, cess it is claimed, tl Florida, Louisiana, looking to getting him being apparently dead against it. CORRESPONDENT. CiarLeston, Sunday, April 22. Breckinridge stock is decidedly up; Hunter declining, and Douglas dead broke. The South, that is, the cotton States, are as firm asa rock, and are evidently determined to bolt if Douglas should be nominated. Hunter's friends refused to confer with the other delegations last night, and said that Hunter should be taken Without a platform; and that if any platform was essential, they would only consent to that of Cincinnati. This offended many, and hence the coolness for him to-day. Joe Lane is decidedly weak—he scarcely stands atall. Jeff. Davis is looming up, but things are so fluctuating he may be out of sight before to-morrow. —— Matt Lettincs ANNouxcrp.—Pursuant to put- lished notice, the awards of contracts for mail service in the middle section were yesterday an- nounced at the Post Office Department to a large number of persons, most of whom were bidders, It was found on examination that 3,700 bids had been made for the 409 routes in Ohio; 3,100 bids for the 525 routes in Pennsylvania; 400 bids for the New Jersey routes, 97 in number; Delaware and Maryland, 1,131 routes, 700 bids were re- ceived.
