Ebening Star. WASHINGTON, D. C., FRIDAY, APRIL 13, 1860 THE COMING PRIZE FIGHT. Fear of molestation by the local authorities have compelled Heenan to change his training quarters, he has removed from Salisbury to a spot near Bath, of which Mr. Wilkes gives a description in a letter to Wilkes’ it of the Times. We make the following extracts from this letter Heenan’s mode of preparation has been al- tered a little within the last few days, and is now as follows: He rises about 6 o'clock in the morning, being awakened by his faithful at- tendant, Cusick, and after taking a good wash of the face, head, and bear in cold water, he s forth. He employs the hour and a half efore that and breakfast time in a brisk walk, and with a run in of afew hundred yards at the top of his speed. He takes breakfast precisely at 8 o’clock, that meal being a la fourchette, beef or mutton yes broiled, without fat, and bread, being the features of the meal. The breakfast being over, he, after the lapse of half an hour, takes abath of cold water with plenty of roch-salt in it, is well and briskly rubbed down from head to foot, and then dis- charges the clothes which had become satura- ted with his morning run, and puts on fresh linen. He then starts out at 9 o'clock, in heavy clothing, with a pair of light dumb-bells in his hands. and takes a walk of eight or ten miles, varying the direction according to the wind, so as to have it behind him coming home. When within a mile of home, he bursts forth into a strong run, coming in at full speed and under profuse perspiration. He is at once seized by his careful attend- ants, as grooms seizes a racer when he comes in lathering from a “‘breeze,”’ and is stripped ot his clothing instanter, and then they fall upon him with strong towels, and rub him vi- olently till his whole skin isin a ruddy glow. Fresh linen and clothing is then put upon him, and he sits down or walks gently about inside of the house and out of the air, a few minutes. He then proceeds to the barn, elose by the house, and exercises with the clubs, dumb- bells, and bag, until he is well fatigued at each, and then loiters about until the dinner hour, which comes at 1 o’clock, and which varies between beef one day and mutton the next, with no vegetables, and the chief con- comitant being bicad, moistened occasionally with a glass of Scotch ale. Spirituous liquors are of course never touch- ed, and tea, coffee, and all fluids, even water, are carefully eschewed. He remains quietly about after dinner till about 2 or 2! o clock, when he goes out fer another long waik, say eight or ten miles, and always with a companion, in order to keep him in cheer- fui conversation, and the route is usually va- ried, so as to sfford employment to his mind and cheerfulness tu his imagination, for everything like monotony must be carefully avoided. In this point of view that trainer or companion is most desirable who has a fund of anecdote and lively conversation, so as to keep him continu- ally m a buoyant humor. He gees along in the afternoon walk at the pace that is the most agreeable to him, and he usually returns by five or half-past five o’clock. He has tea and bread at six o'clock precisely, and towards seven o'clock he takes another slow walk, and returns ateight o'clock. At half-past eight he is furnished with a large bowl of oat meal gruel, which serves him for his supper. and at nine he goes to bed. This has been his daily routine ever since he has been at the Box, and it will continue with little variation down to the day of the fight. I repeat that he is obedient and docile, and his trainers have the utmost confidence in his success They speak of him in the same extravagant terms that Aaron Jones did when he first tried him, just after his arrival in America; but they say they will have him in far better “ fix’? than Jones turned him out, and better than he could possibly ever have been before, for since the fight with Morrissey he has become de- veloped into a much larger and heavier man I am quite sure he will not fight at I:ss than 190 Ibs., (13 stone 8 Ibs...) notwithstanding the Tepresentation to the editor of Bell’s Life that he would fight below 12st. 7 Ibs.; but I sup- pose, tocover that slip of the tongue, he wi!l not go to scale at all, and Sayers will remain ignorant of the weight of his opponent, even ahter the fight is over. Heenan is marvelously well advanced, and could be made ready for his battle in a week, were it necessary to hurry him for that pur- pose; but there is no such need, and he is just where he should be four weeks in advance of the day of trial. The object of training is to produce a man at his highest point of physical perfection at a given day and hour; and the art of the trainer is exhibited in conducting his man to his climax by regular degree. Like ahorse, he can -‘ bloom’? but once during a preparation, and it is all-important that he do not bloom a day too soon or a day too late. He ean hold perfection but a little while, and when the climax is reached we may at once see the beginning of the decline. It is the intention, at present, on the part of his trainers, to make a long fight of it—at any rate not to feree the fighting, and make a “hurricane battle” of it, as in the vase of Mor- rissey. They speak with confidence of beating Sayers at hisown game; and in evidence of their sincerity are willing to bet at evens that the fight will last over an hour; which means, I spare, that it will last just as long as Sayers can last. The confidence of Sayers and his backers, on the other hand, is just as great, or if anything greater than the confidence which exists among the friends of Heenan; and the six to four which they are ready to lay on their man is the firm complexion of the market. A good deal of it has been taken, however, during the last week, and confidence in Heenan’s chances seems to be growing with the crowd. Sayers still remains at Newmarket. The subject of the battle continues to be the most popular subject of discussion, and new ballads are constantly coming out about “Tom Sayers and the Bold Benish,” and new carica- tures and lik@nesses of the heroes are orna- menting the shop windows. The matter has even found its way upon the stage, and the Olympic has catered to the public excitement in « farce which turns upon the ludicrous an- poyances a lusty young traveler is subjected to by being mistaken for the Benicia Boy. The piece is successful, as, indeed, is everything that is issued bearing upon the absorbing fistic tournament. Itis settled that the visitors to the arena shall be conveyed there by a special train, and to make the matter as select as possible the fare will be fixed at three and_five guineas for first and second-class cars. This will be all the ticket of admission es ap to see the fight, for the train will stop when ordered, and every one will at once swarm to the ground. Two rings will be formed, and trusses of straw will be furnished for the $15 and $25 spectators, according to their degree. The contest will probably come off, I think, exactly on the dey named, though if there be a reasonable appr hension of interference from the authorities on that date, it will be anticipated some three or four days—the only stipulation waar at resent on that subject being, as requested by jeenan’s party. that it eball not come off earlier than Thursday, the 12th of April; so you will perceive there is no foundation for the rumor cet has got into print, that it may even now come off at any day. The editor of Bell’s Life in London has the direction of this matter ——s in hisown hands, and I get the matter directly from him. I should mention in this connection, that many of the pine I write you in this letter, I would withhold but for the fact that they cannot come back in time br ae or interfere with the arrangements o it. The affair is looked forward to with great anticipation by the newspapers. Al! the sport- ing journals are moking ready to fi the towns with extras; the ilgstrated journals have already set their artists to work ‘upon a series Meentrated for “he f t n of the nation absorbing domestic incident.
