AN ADVENTURE IN THE CARS. There were five of us—yes, five as happy fel- lows as were ever let loose fromcollege. It was vacation, and we concluded to take a trip to the Falls. We got aboard at N——, and were soon traveling rapidly toward our destination. We had just seated ourselves and prepared for a comfortable smoke, when in came the conductor, and who should it be but our old friend, Fred b After the common salu- tations, ‘‘ How are you, old fellow.” etc., ete., had passed, Fred remarked he had some busi- ness for us to attend to. “Out with it, old chum,” said we; “anything at all will be acceptable, so let us have it.”” “« Well, boys,” said Fred, in a very confiden- tial tone, ‘‘in that next car there is as loving a pair as was ever my lot to see. They are going down to A to get married, and now if you can have any fun over it, just pitch in. They yaust be cared for, and I don’t know who can do it better than you.”” In a moment Fred was gone, and we set our heads together to form a plan for “taking care of the lovers.”” “T have it, boys,”’ said Bill Seevers; “we must make that girl think that her lover is married—’’ ** That's it, Bill Seevers—that’s it,”’ said we. not giving him time to finish the sentence. ~ That heis a married man and the father of children.” said Bill. «: That's the game, boys, now let us play it.” It devolved apon me to commence operations Accordingly I entered the car in which we were informed the lovers were. The girl thinking, I suppose, that she must give her lover all the seat, had taken a scat on his knee; and he, for the purpose of protecting her. of course, had thrown his arm around her waist; and so they sat, in real, soft loving style. All this [ gathered at a glance. Stepping up to them, I said Why, Jones, what in the deuce are you do- ing with this girl ?° The girl arose hastily, and seated herself on the seat. See here, stranger.’’ said the fellow, “you are a mite mistaken; my name ain't Jones.” ~ Why, Jones,”’ said I, “you certainly have not left your wife and children, and tried to Palm yourself off for a single man, have you?” ‘I tell you my name ain't Jones: its Harper. It never was Jones; “taint a goin’ to be.” I merely shook my head, and passed on to another seat, to see the rest of the fun. The girl looked ‘‘wild”’ after I sat down: but Jones alias Harper soon convinced her that I was mistaken. About the time they got to feeling quite well again, 1h vamo El Grogg. Walking up to SLarper, he accosted him with ‘Why, Jones, you here! How did you leave yowr wife and babies?” «Now see here, stranger, you ain’t the fust man that’s called me Jones to-day, an’ I must look awfully like him; but I ain't Jones. I hain’t got a wife. nor babies either, but this ere gal an’ me is a goin’ to splice, and then yon ean talk about my wife, and [ wouldn't wonder but what in the course of time you might talk about the babies, too; but you mus’n’t call me Jones.”” This retort brought forth vociferous laughter from the spectators, and it also brought blushes to the face of -‘the gal that was goin’ to be spliced.”” “‘Ah. Jones,’ said Gregg, this in the future I really pi and chi “you will regret ty your poor wife idren and this poor girl-"’ Mr. Harper. your real name is Jones, is it. an’ you have been foolin’ me, have you? Weil, we ain’t spliced yet; and I don’t think we will be very soon,’’ said the young girl, and her eyes fairly flashed with fire. «Jane, Jane,” said Harper, ‘don't you know I'm Bill Harper? Thar ain’t a darn drop of Jones blood in me, and I'll prove it.”” At this mowent, Jeff Jackson, Bill Seevers, and Jim Byers entered, and of course their attention was called to Harper by his loud talk- ing. They stepped up to him and said. “Why, Jones, what is all this fuse about ?”” This was more than Harper could stand. He leaped upon a seat ~ Now,”” said he, ‘my name ain’ I can lick any feller that says it By this time we had got to A-—, and Fred came into the car and made Bill Harper keep quiet. The girl that wouldn’t be “spliced” requested Fred to help heron the train that was going back to N » Which he did, and the notorious Jones, alias Hurper followed. We heard afterwards that he proved himself to be Bill Harper instead of Bill Jones, and ke and his gal got “‘spliced.”’ — +20 Steam Cars on Passenger Railways. [From the Philadelphia Gazette.] Some time ago we described in full a newly invented city passenger car, constructed at the works of Messrs. Murphy & Allison, and pro- Hed by steam, Socees on the railways of the city. Yesterday we enjoyed the pleasure of a trial trip in this car from the depot of the Fifth and Sixth street company in Kensington to the station of the same company in Frankford, with a number of gentlemen connected with the various railway lines of the city, representatives of the press, ete. The road traversed is a very rough one, built cheaply of cast iron rails, which are shor er than those of wrought iron used in the city streets, and as the material is less durable the joints well worn, and the traveling good for dyspeptics. There are also some sharp curves and steep grades, which are calculated to test the powers of alocomotive. But with all these difficulties the car made her trip in 30 minutes, against 45 usually taken by the horse cars. It was really a; ble travel ing to, for the car was heated by steam pipes, so that it was as comfortable inside as in a parlor. There is no escape of smoke, as theengine consumes only anthracite, and uses up her_ow: gas. Nor is there escape steam, that being carefully pro- vided aganst. Thus, when the locomotive is in full head of steam, there is no puffing or blowing, no wheezing to be heard outside, and in fact, nothing to frighten a horse. On tke road, all sorts of vehicles were encountered, drawn by every description of horse, from the thorough bred to the common draug’ t horse. They were passed at the ordinary pace and withoutstopping, but none of them took fright. And this se tles clearly enough that the steamer will not frighten horses. The time was somewhat faster than that made by the ordinary horse cars, but not so much so as could have been accomplished. This locomotive will travel at the rate of thir- teen miles per hour, which exceeds that al- lowed by statute. It can be made of any re- uired power, to suit the road. On the Darby ine it would have to be of considerable trac- tion to overcome the long and heavy grades, and the same may be said of the Ridge Avenuo and Germantown lines. It is to be tried on the Darby rosd shortly. On the Frankford route, notwithstanding the sharp curves and heavy grades, it is competent to make twenty- three miles per hour. Tuesday it rounded every curve with the utmost ease, stopped with the same facility as the ordi ary cars at the jal, and mounted the most difficult hill the same speed as the common horse cars. The engine has been tried with several cars attached, and draws them easily, a fact of ver: considerable importance on mikeads, as well as on city lines on extraordinary oceasions. is, it must be understood, is one of the fea- tures of the invention, that by the increased power it enables the company to transport a more commodious car. As 3 the danger of explosion, there is none whatever. The state of water the “Doiler is always visible to both the engineer and the passengers. by an unfailing index; and at every return to the station the whole appa- ratus is of course freshly examined. The bet was between a Water-street merchant and Ned Osborne, of the Tremont House, the largest cigar and to- bacco dealer in the city, and was to the effect that if Wentworth was not elected, Osborne Springer street. The day after the election, stomach store, and presented his person to him for the borne should take the stakes. Osborne had been training his right leg all the previous day, and had armed his foot with a heavy cowhide boot, with soles as thick as two elephants. The merchant started up by the Tremont, Osborne delivering a heavy kick as he started, but drew back his foot with a spasmodic action, and pa- roxysm of countenance absolutely pitiful.
