Minamon.—The New Orleans Picayune says : The U. S. prize steamer Gen. Miramon, Lieut. Minor commanding, came oe the city day morning, and anchored of the Marine Hospital, where she now lies. She was Com. Marin’s flag- sbip. and consequently fitted up with more of an eye to comfort and elegance than her consort, the Barques de la Habana. Her cabin, in particular, is very neatly and tastefully arranged. toa 4 its ornaments are several very pretty drawings of the Commodore's two sons, whe were taken on board with him. Outside the Miramon’s cabin, however, things look very different. ‘The gun deck, upper works, Tigging and all, give evidence of the hot engage- ment she hasbeen in. The marksof cannon balls, Minnie balls, musket balls, and shell explosions, are everywhere to be seen. Among the most no- ticeable is the mark of » cannon shot on a large mounted iron piece in the centre of the vessel. It ts particularly curious in this that the iron has the appearance ‘of bel melted. rather than indented Thesmoke stack, also, curious enough, has a clean rannon shot through it. The wheel and wheel- house, compass, ventilator, &c., are completely smashed up, while the sides of the steamer are rid- dled tn every direction, and the rigging very badly cut up. The Miramon received three broadsides from the Saratoga, besides an innumerable number of ritte shots from the Indianola, during the engage- ment, and It is surprising that the loss of life, in each case great, was not even greater. Everything bears witness to the bravery and determined re- sistance of ber commander. He yielded, how- ever, very gracefully to adverse fortune. 'Retir- ing at once to his cabin hé divested himself of «very portion of his uniform, except a richly tas- reled commodore’s scarf, and attired himself in a plain but elegant suit of black, which he was worn ever since. Com. Marin is about years of age, but as pears somewhat younger. He is very alight built, net more than five feet five or six inches in height, and, perhaps, 120 pounds in weight. He is very firmly knit together, however, particularly in the shoulders, stands and walk perfectly erect, and altogether has a commanding appearance. A very dark complexion and jet black eye give bim also a somewhat flery appearance, or what would be such. were it not for quiet and exceedingly gentle manners. Vouice Law —The argument before the Court of Appeals on the constitutionality of the new pc- Hice law was continued and concluded yesterday by Wm. Schley, esq., for the Mayor and City Council. With the exception of a point raised as to the constitntionality of the ‘‘ Helper amend ment’? affixed to the bill in the Senate, the Jegal issues argued were the same as those adjudica on the Superior Court. The decision of the court will probably be announced in a few days.— Bal. timore American Destructive Fire ix Wasutnctox County, Pa.—The borough of Washington has been visit- ed by a destructive couflagration, the most serious that ever occurred in that place. The fire broke euton Wednesday morning in an extensive gro- cery establishment, and before it could he extin- suished communicated with and destroyed eight or ten stores and dwellings on both sides of the street. The total loss is mated at $50,000. [> The operatives in the Harmony Mills at Cokoes, N. Y.. to the number of 1,200, have struck for an advance of wages, and operations in the es- tablishment are for the present suspended. They claim old prices before the ‘‘panic.”” U7" The keel of a new iron-sheated line-of- vettle ship is «bout to be laid down at Cher- bourg She will be 328 feet in length, with an iron prow 30 feet long, and be called the Napo- leon J. iL Mr. Forsyth, of the Mobile Register, has been appointed by the Governor of Alabama, Commissioner under the act of the recent Legisla- ture for the promotion of direct trade with Europe. ‘The salary is $4,500.
