Tue Cuar.xston Convention. —The Charles- ton Mercury defends the hotel keepers of that city ainst the charges of extortion brought against them, and says: Beyond the five or six thousand guests which our hotels can accommodate, we anticipate but narrow provision will be made. To some small extent a few restaurants, etc., will arrange their business for the occasion. We regard that nuin- ber as ample for the Convention, and hope that it will not exceeded. We look upon the cries of ten and twenty thousand strangers attendant upon the Convention. as insanely extravagant. If the outside mob can be curtailed, and the retain- ing host be but trifling. the old ers at such Conventions will confess that the Charleston Con- vention was the most comfortable and most quiet of all these quadreinial assemblies. ‘The only dis comfort attending the Convention of next month, will be the presence of ontsiders and blackguards, for whom no accommodations, except an increased police, will be made A TRIAL ConpUcTED IN THE ABSENCE OF THE Crimixat.—The right of an accused pe son to be Present athis trial and confront witnesses is a persoual right only, and is understood to be waived when the isoner voluntarily absents himself. as did Jas.
