The Midiand Company have secured the fish wharf for the coming season, for which they pay S450, and the Alleghany Company, which was not shipping last year, have resumed operations at the upper coal wharf, at the mouth of the canal. We suppose that during the busy season the amount paid out weekly for labor will not fall short of $3,000, besides ‘the large amount which will be expended here by vessels and canal boats which this trade will engage. “Two more splendid passenger cars for the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, arrived yester- day in the schooner Henry Finch, from Jersey City. They have all the modern improvements, and are fitted up in the most elegant style. The increased travel over the ‘Alexandria and Lyncb- burg Railroad demanded this increase in the pas- senger accommodation. The equipments of the road will now compare most favorably with any road in the country. “Within the last day or two several thousand shad have been ught to the fish wharf, at this e, principally the catch of the gillers in ashington’s Reach and below that, in the Poto- mac. Yesterday sales were made at $17 per bun- dred. ‘The regular hauling of the large seines, at the different landings, has ly commenced yet; the cold weather and high winds having pre- vented fishing operations. The catch of herring is as yet small—and soy bo only sold in buncher, for daily use. So far the weather has not been favorable for the fisheries Everything is now ready at the fish wharf for the receipt of fish, and the accommodation of purchasers. It is said that a few days ago, two policemen, one big and the other little, had a conversation something like the following, ata locality on H street, in rear of the Patent Office: Big Policeman to little ’un.—‘“Say, you'd per go and attend drill.” Little ’on.—*Nary time! there's no such lawon the books.”’ Big Policeman —“Mind 1 tell you, you had better go and drill, or the Mayor °ll have that harness taken off you quicker,” (pointing to the grey uniform. ARREST FOR INCENDIARISM.— Yesterday, Mr. Charles Brown, whose stable in the Sixth Ward was fired obtained a clue to the parties concerned in the act. Informing some of his friends and County Constables Plumsill and Williams, they succeeded in arresting Thomas Howard, aged ut 16 years. and Joseph Fuzitt, aged about 18, and carried them before Justice Cull. who sent them to jail fora further hearing. As they were being put in an omnibus to go to jail, one of them inted out a youth named Smith, who they said new something about it. Smith was put in the coach and taken to jail, but as he was not com- mitted he could not’ be received. It afterwards turned out that he had nothing to do with it. This morning Justice Cull proceeded to the jail, and succeeded in obtaining from Howard sutti- cient evidence to send Fugitt to Court. Justice Cull Bully committed Fugitt and retained How- ard asa witness. There are others concerned in the incendiary acts at the Navy Yard, who have not been arrested. The arrest of these created mucb excitement in that section of the city, and great joy prevailed at the discovery of the parties, though sympathy for the families of those con- cerned was everywhere expressed. Pror. Fow.er’s fifth lecture, last evening, was on “the perfection of character the right government, training. and proper direction of children.” He held that in order to have children grow up so.as to become useful and worthy citi- zens, they must have, as it were, their ‘faculties played npon” in childhood. See that their mind ‘was well balanced and all would beright. Unruly children could not be made better by either whip- ping or scolding. If a child .was inclined to be mischievous and bad he must be corrected by kindness. A pare should never speak derogatory of achild’s character in that child’s presence, lest it wounded its feeling and destroyed all its pride and ambition. Nor should they ever remark in the child’s hearing that they were unable to man- age it, lest the child should lose ell fear of the pa- rent, and act without restraint. It is to be regretted that the committee appointed to select persons for public examination do not Present those who are well known to the commu- nity, that the public may know whether the exam_ inations are correct. Tue Row at Geruanpt’s.— Saturday after- Roon, a young man named Wm. Lansford went to the lager beer house of J. Gerhardt. on C street, near Sixth, and drank there. Lansford. who had taken a little too mnch, fell on the floor. His friends asked fora chair for him to sit upon. which, being refused, one of them went to geta chair. upon which a row ensued, and Lansford was badly beaten with a stick by the bar-keeper, Fred’k Diedrich. He was arrested and taken be- fore Justice Donn, where he stated that Lansford was burt by falling on thestove, but this was con- tradicted by the evidence. The witnesses ted that the fre of the bar-keeper was raised by the fact of their drinking a bottle of sherry on the premi- ses not purchased in the establishment. Justice Donn held Diedrich to bail for court. Dry Goops —R. Brice Hall, the extensive dealer on the upper part of Seventh street, has recently opened as extensive and fine a lot of staple dry goods as were ever bronght to the District of Co- lumbia. His business up to this time has for the most part been confined to citizens in search for bargains—to those of us proverbially solicitous of always being sure to Ect their money’s worth in buying family supplies, and to the Maryland trade. To both these classes his sales for years past have been enormous. and they bid fair to in- crease, as all now know that no better goods and no lower prices tuan hie are to be met With In any dry-goods store in the country.
