Tiny Lecturg oF Pror. FowLer.—Philbar- monic Hall was crowded again last evening. Prof. Fowler delivered a highly-interesting lec- ‘ure, on the “Social Relations.” He first advised his andience as to what course should be pursued in order to prolong life, and then proceeded to show “ who should and who should not marry.”” In education, habit, disposition, taste, and the so- vial qualities, there should be similarity in the husband and wife, to insure happiness. Many wnen are proud of their wives because of their in- telligence, and yet affording them no opportunity to continue the cultivation of their minds and in- diulge in their love of literature while at home or in their society, Coop! i them to seek it else- where. The fact ts, if young women and young men were peopeely educa! to be wives and husbands, the happiness of the domestic cir- cle would be greatly increased. A young man .vas not in a condition to marry until he was able "o take care of bimecif. A young man should “iret learn to value his own nature, bis own consti- “ation, bis own life. Many a young lady allowed herself to be burried into the marital relation without understanding her own character or uature—without putting that value upon herself that she ought to. All these various faculties in men and women have their natural language. “‘Adhesiveness” vives the disposition to hold the herd ina certain position. Itis on both sides of ‘he head. In its active state it manifests itself to- wards the person whom the individual loves; they sit holding their heads toward each other—always toward each other, thongh the individuals them- selves may not be aware of it. He very often saw it exbibited among his audience. (Laughter. ] ‘The faculty of adhesiveness, which Included love of children and animals, was more predomi- wantin men than women He deprecated mar- rying at an early age, and said that no young man eught to marry until he was at least twenty-five vears of age; and no young lady until she had reached ber eixhteenth—better wait until her twentieth year. He also condemned in severe terms the practice. now becoming so universal, of Perseus marrying those who were so much younger ider than themselves; also urged the interdic- tron of the intermarriage of cousins. In the former + ase be instanced the marriage of Mrs. E—., of this city, a lady of 54 toa young man of 19, and said be was always shocked to bear of such di- & esston from what should always be the rule ob- served with regard to marriages. No ordii mechanic shonld marry a handsome lady ofrefined and cultivated manners, and who moved in a higher grade of society, as it was very likely to render both parties unhappy, and engender mo- roseness of disposition, such a lady not being able fo accustom herself tothe humbie and perhaps secluded position she would be forced to occupy. let such a one rather take a wife who moved in the same circle, and whose disposition, taste, and manners Were in every way consentaneous to bis own Again, no jealous man should marry a band- some woman, as the admiration which she would very naturally receive would cause this faculty to develop itself {n the man, and his jealous spirit might cause him to act in such a way as to render them both unhappy. A lady once came to him and complained that since she had been married, because she was a remarkably fine singer, and possessed other attractive qualities of mind and Person, and from this fact received the approving smiles of many, her husband had required her to desist from singing tn cuurch, avd forced her to live in almost entire seclusion. He referred to this incident to show the unhappy results of such marriages. He denounced the far too prevailing idea that it was injurious to have girls and boys educated in the same room, and at | ey It was well known that a company of young mer would rehave in a very different manner if there was oy one lady cent, than they would otherwise; and he thought the samme might be said of the other sex. After the lecture, a committee designated to select persuus ty be caamined, brought forward Rev G. Butler of the Lutheran Church, and Mr. A. F. Cunningham, who took positions on the platform. Mr. Fowler first proceeded to state the phreno- logical organization of Mr. Butler, in which be ssid there were some peculiaritics worthy of note This organization was a very distinct one; the organs of the brain stood out as though they had been much exercised. His temperament in- dleated uncommon degree of action of the mind rather than of the body. He was noted first as heing a ‘positive’ man; he bad an individuality and identity of bis own; secondly, he was an in- dependent man, almost too independent; it cost bim considerable to sustain his independence. for he would not yield to another as long as he regarded himself as being inthe right. Another it in his character w: “Hope.” He was aracterized by much combativeness; fond of scussion; sharp in debate. He was aA too much energy for his bodily frame. He was also inclined to be sarcastic On being asked if what had been said of him was correct, Mr. Butler replied. --In some points; but he did not recognize «-combatative- ness” as being quite so strong. He was then asked his profession, when he stated he was a clergyman Mr. Fowler —Now, 4 will venture to say, that, #s a clergyman, he lays the law right down; he sives sinuers no quarters at all. [Laughter ] Mr. A. F. Cunningham was next examined — pire > the lecturer said, looked to ee Precisely whet be was. His physiology an pbrenology harmonized. He bad 2 muck of the vital mature and power of constitution as was necessary to act with the brain. His brain was not equal to his vitality; he had a surplus of flesh, which was an impediment in his way. The remedy was, ‘eat a little less. work a little more, and he will be all right.” He was generous. good hearted. yood natured; and an ‘excellent neighbor. He wasa very bs baal parses man. His mother was remarkable for her kindness of dispo- sition. He was not a very strict theologian. Kind- ness was a predominant characteristic; be is ver self-possessed; seldom quoted authors; but relied en hisown judgment. He had Ligh intellectual qualities; good, strong, practical common sense; ebaracterized by — individuatity of thought, and great originality of mind. Asa speaker. bis style was rather smcoth, conversationa ; bis char- acter as a speaker would be to impart knowledge. Mr Hatcher, a dent at Columbian College, the next subject. He was of a long lived family; 2 good mathematician; a great walker; though delighting in ladies company, his «ama. tiveneas’’ was uot predominant, and it would Me him half a dozen years to become sufficiently atfached to a lady to ask her hand in marriage; the lecturer therefore advised him to begin at once. [Laughter.} One or two others were examined, when Prof. Fowler announced as his next lecture “The choice Ta the most appropriate occupations or pursuits in le” Potice MatreRs—Before Justice Cull—Wm. Robinson and Jos. W- Thompson were attacked night before last, in front of Been’s tavern, on the Navy Yard, and beaten in an outrageous manner, by four men—three of whom are named John Lee, Jobn St. John, and —— Anderson. The parties were arrested, and tried yesterday evening before Justice Cull, Mr. Norris appearing for the defend- ants. The evidence disclosed a most cowardly and brutal attack upon Thompson and Robinson, both of whom were knocked down, kicked, stumped upon. and beat about the head with slung shot. Thompson was again attacked, when near his own house, by the same parties, after he had parted from Robinson, and beat about the head with a loaded cane. Justice Cull held the three accused to bail for court, and issued a war- raut against the unknown fourth party implicated. Tue Fisheries —The returns of fish from the Potomac landings are very small. xs yet. The supply of the fish market with fresh shad and her- ring is from the Potomac landings; but the insuf- ficiency of the supply to meet the demend causes an imperative price for shad of from 62 cents to $1 per pair. The number of fish arriving in the river, and the great number of selnes in operation, cut- ting the shoals to pieces as they advance towards the upper waters, afford but a small su ply for the upper landings, from which this market obtains its fresh fish Aj the present rate, Iindiugs will do Se than po tess a “IAN AND PuiLorHReNian Society College, will hold their annual the Smithsonian Institution on ‘Toursday evening, April 12th, commencing at § ae ler « = will be as fol- lows: 3 c; Prayer; Peem by Rev.
