Ds. Napat's Stconp Lectore.—The second ectare of Dr. Nadal, at Foundry Chapel last eve- 4. was largely attended. ‘This lecture was a ‘ntinuation of the subject descanted upon during toe first lecture, viz: Sights in and about London. Referring to the established Church of England, of which he discovered he had held very erroneous be said that nearly every four out of five traveler met, considered themselves as longing to this Church. It was at first ditticult for him te conceive how the le could recon- eile thetr love of liberty and. dha e of Romanism with their attacbment for the established Church; bat, as he had already remarked, he soon discov- ered he had entertained mistaken views in regard te this Church, its form of worship and character. There were peculiar and very natural reasons why home rages should have an especial fondness for it. This Bea! | Church had furnished martyrs whose blood had been offered for Cbrist. English literature, the richest in the world, everywhere emitted an odor of the Church, at least recognized the Church as au element of society—nay, more, the Church herself bad been the proper source of that literature; so that all literary men were accus- tomed to associ :te yenius and goodness, inte; rity and learning with their national! Church. The rich were attached to it from natural vauity, as it was the Church of the Sovereign, the Court, the nobitity and the yentry of the King. Those who had no religious affections, but considered re- ligion an essential attribute of respectability, and a mark of pablic decency, patronized the estab- lished Church as decidedly the best thing they could do in the light of spiritual things. ‘There were others, again, who attended this Church be- «ause they were paid for so doing, us in the way of distribution cf temporary benefits. The E: lish Goverament ri upon such a stable bas} that tt could not easily be destroyed. Romanism hed scarcely a name, much less an existeuce, in England. ‘ The speaker gave an exceedingly interest'n:: a_count of bis tour through and about the city of London, and particularly alluded to his visit to Nyse Park, and the burial place of the poet Gray, where the scenes there presented constantly called t» bis mind the beautiful stanzas of the poet, con- tiined in Bis elegy written in the same country cuurch-yard where he was entombed, which ~emed to apply as appropriately as if they had heen written that hour. He referred to the great + sationsness exercised by Englishmen in making traveling acquaintances; but could not bat ob- serve the fact that when one represented himself asan American tbis reserve was cast aside, and he was treated with the same familiarity as an el1 acquaintance. Tur New Cexrag Market-Hovsx —In_ the Sen: esterday, Mr Brown asked the bedy to indulze him so far as to take up the bill authoriz- ing the Corporation of Washington to makealoan and issue stock for 2200.00, for uilding a market- house. The working season was coming on, and it was important to the interests of the citizens of Washington that advantage should be taken of it, and the bill at once disposed of. The motion was agreed to, and the bil! was taken up, 38 reported from the Committee for the District of Columbia, together with the amend- ments made by the House, with amendments thereto. These amendinents were discussed by Messrs. Brown. Hale, Hamlin, Pagh, and others, when the bill was reported to the Senate and passed in the following shape: Be vt enacted, &¢ That all the ground lying be- tween Seventh and Ninth streets, and froating on Peansylvania and Louisiana avenues, now and bitherto used and occupied for the Centre Market, be, aud the same is hereby, ceded to the Corpe- ration of Washington, on condition that said Cor- poration, within two years after this act takes «tcet, erect thereon a market-house. The said house to beso constructed as te admit foot pas- sengers through only one entrance to the market eu tae north side; market wagons and other vebi- cles on the south side only, with means of exitfor the sime on Seventh and Ninth streets, and to ex- «tude marketing from Pennsylvania and Lo: avenves, aud the side walks and pa: on. And, for the purpose of erecting such market- house, it shall be lawful for said Corporation to create a debt in such form as may be found ex- pedient, not exceeding the sum of $200,000, at a Tate of Interest not exceeding 6 per centum per #naum, any restriction in the charter of said city or existing laws to the comtrary notwithstanding : Provided, however, That the Government of the United States shall, in no event whatever, be, either directly or indirectly, liable for the princi- pal or interest upon asy loan which may ve ob- trined under the provisions of this act The entire revenue of said building shall, after payinz con- tingent expenses and interest on the stock, be ap. propriated to the payment of tue stock issued in accordance with the provisions of this act. See. 2. And be it further enacted, That no more 2 3220.00 shall’be expended in building said toarket-house, nor shall any contracts be entered tato which involve a larger expenditure for the completion of the same. . ATTEMPT AT Svicipe.—Yesterday morning, about 11 o’elock, Joseph Sorg, a German, aged about 33 years, attempted suicide by cutting bis throat, in the ceil range at the Guard-house. He had stopped there the night previous, and after the guard of the day went up to report to the Chief of Police, he remained at the station. Upon the retarn of the guard, about tig o'clock, be fouud Sorg Iying na cell. and when the guard looked in at bim, melpotes his bead uader the bench, as if to conceal himself. The guard went back, ppien he had been put there by an of- fiver. ‘Phe guard went down a second time, and s«w that he had moved to another cell, and a large butcher knife, covered with blood, was lying on the floor In another cell. He asked Sorg what he had done, and he, raising up, sho xed the gash be had4nflicted upon bimself. It was evident that the firm intention of Sorz was to destroy himself, and his previous conduct was as if he was watching an opportunity to do it certainly. He was a cook by profession, and basa wife, who is employed es a cook at Brown’s Hotel. Sue is an Irish woman. The wounds red to be hacked as if more than one c' been made. Surgical sid was immediat-ly called, and the wounds temporariiy baud ged, and the sufferer was removed to the infirmary. Mr. Barnes kept him at the Guard- house all day Tuesday. at the request of his wife, and he was evidenti: deranged—kn ocking at the cell door, asking protection against the inhabitants a who had sent Mmegsengers to take his ife. We understand to-dry, from the physician in attendance he him in the Infirmary, that Sorg is doing well, and will soom be con raleacent, unless he should take it into his head to borrow, another butchers’ knife.
