Then, as to the fame he seemed t» crave, It took to itself such siarming shapes! Ona ionrnal had openly calied him “a knave ;” another had dubbed him *‘a. And once, when the bell like a gon; i rung, And she peeped from her room at the head of the stsir, Shesaw a man who a horsewhip swung— (1588 seven fect high, she was ready to swear— Vho inquired, with a strangely ferocious air, “Was the éditor there ? ~ And if he was not at home, where? B * in noticing the fact that a gentleman of Buc. touche, N. B_., while crossing the mouth of the river Cocaigne, on the ice a few days since drove into an oyster-bed losing his horse, sleigh and harness, narrowly escaping with his life, says: “Itis a curious fact, for which naturalists and men of science have as yet been unable to account thatin the Gulf of St. Lawrence, alo whose shores solid ice forms everywhere, the ice does not ,exceptin very severe weather. Even then ice does not become of the same consistence or solidity asin those places where oyster-beds are not formed. Itis owing to this peculiarity that the inbabitants of the Gulf coast are enabled to discover the exact | sealer of the oysters when the ice first makes, as the water remains unfrozen over the beds, when all around is firm ice. In the latter part of the Winter these oyster holds are very dangerous to those who travel on the ice, es- pecialy at night or during snow storms; and al- Most every-season we hear of serious accidents from persons driving into them. Rosstne tre SuakeRs.—For some time past the quiet of the Watervliet Shakers has been disturbed by a party of thieves, who have been in the habit of chtting young wood from their grounds.
