Naval.—The St. Mary’s at Guyamas. Correspondence of the Star. U.S. Sur St. Mary’s, Guramas, Sonora, Feb. 14, 1960. ‘This ship still ns here—officers and all well. ‘e have been here now four months, ing the interest of American citizens in Eiqeater, and ween t to remain until relieved one of the otber ships of the Pacific Squadron. is a ramor here of a revolution about to break out, and that in a few days there will bea t battle; but it willend insmoke, asall things a this quarter generally do. Mexico, without @@udt, is the greai for false re of any that I have ever been in. But! think as soon as the McLane treaty is ratified by the Senate that theae will be such » rush here from California that will make thée people stir Cradle faster than they do. Al ly some or forty have come down here from California for the Purpose of ac and there area great week more coming. This {sa fine mineral country, an J am told that there are richer gold mines here than there ever was in California, but the Indians will not let them be worked. The silver, copper and lead mines bere are very extensive; and if there is a large emigration hither they will of course develop the resources of the country, which will make this a San Francisco. This is a very healthy place; in fact, doctors have nothing todo. The climate is delightful, and in the hands of Americans Guyamas could be made a flourishing city. It has a yood harbor, an excellent back country, and Gort advantage for 2 railroad, with scarcely any grading to be done. The route from here to the. ican line is as level as a house floor; and three crops of corn can be rairei in a year. I have no doubt that it will not be long after the treaty goes into effect before Sonora will be one of the States of the American Union. The English frigate Amathyst was here about four weeks ago, and during her temporary stay the St. Mary’s took a small cruise across the Gulf to Lower California, for the purpose of exercising the crew and cle:ning the ship’s bottom. The St. Mary's went up about ten miles in the bay of presen, in Lower California, and while there the whole village (men, women and children.) came down on board of the St. Mary’s. They drought music, &c., with them, determined to have a good time. After being on board a short time the — deck was cleared, awnings spread, and festooned around with flags, &c; e ng being ready, the dancing commenc in ear to the delight of all. ‘they danced until about twelve o’clock. The weather being so — that they could not leave the ship, theybad to stay all —_ The cabin was given up to the I and the men were distributed about in the officers quarters and made themselves as comfortable as possible. The next morning the Weather still being rough, the ship was got under ‘way and led down abreast of the village e, when they all went on shore about 3 o'clock, highly delighted with their visit, and I have no doubt that they will always remember their trip on board of the St. Mary’s. After remaining at Molege a pe again got under way and reached cf be 5 absent about ten days. Soon after our ar- rival the English pe me Amathyst got under way and out of the harbor, bound down to Panama. As she passed us we gave her three cheers, which was answered by the British tars, while the band of the Amatbyst played ‘Hail Co- lumbia,”’ “Cheer Boys, Cheer,” “Sweet Home,” and “Nancy Dawson.” scene eons brig ae Payne, belonging apt. me's surveyin; ty, was wrecked on the night of the 26th of Janust and became a loss. She went ashore about thirty miles from here, while coming across the gulf to this port. Every effort was made to get her off, but witbout avail, and she finally went to pieces on the night of the 26th. We had Previously sent a party of our men to assist in getting her off, who were on board at the time she went to pieces, and sad to relate, three were drowned, one be- te the brig and two tothe St.’ Mary's; those belonging to the St. Mary’s were Conrad Metze and Napoleon Mabte, and that of the brig, Jacob Johanmeson. All the rest returned to the - in safety. We have had three arrivals here from San Francisco with the last week, viz: The schooner Geneva, bark Guyamas, and brig Carmelite, all ander the Mexican flag, and regular traders here. Some thirty miners arrived here in the Guyamas for the purpose of mining in the Yackee river, and it is said ‘there are a great number more on their way down here from California for the same pur- - Yours, &c., T.F.J. ————+e0e>—_____ ATrip to the Roaring Mountains. Correspondence of the Star. Ironton, Mo., March 11, 1860. Dear Star :—Since my last. I have had the re of making a trip to old Madison county, just for the purpose of seeing the much talked-of goa mines, and it was there that I came across above mentioned natural curiosity. This mountain is in Madison county, 14 miles south- ‘west of Fredericktown, the county seat. On the east of it is Trace creek; on the west side the wa- ters of Cantain’s creek forma semi-circle. One the right banks of the last mentioned creek is a ravine, which isthe bed of the newly discovered gold and platina veins, where the Roaring Moun- tain Company is about erecting extensive works. ‘The mountain has a height of some 400 feet, is one mile in diameter, chiefly of solid rocks, more or less interspersed with quartz. It derives its name from a peculiar roaring , something like the sound of distant thunder, which generally lasts about 15 minates, and which sounds have a singular effect when mingled with the howling of the wolves, who are still to be found in respectable numbe § in the adjoining forests. it is thought that the mountain. or rather the whole ridge of mountains, originated Py. _—_ volcanic eruptions, to which the roar, whieh sounds as coming from the bowels of the earth, must be attributed. The sound may be beard sometimes to the distance of two miles. ’ u easterly direction from the gold mines, ing a distance of one mile, there is au opening of two feet in diameter, which is appa- rently connected with a cave, filied with water a goed part of the year. It is believed that this cave may reach a greater depth, and that the peculiar sound is caused by gases formed by the water play = the metals, and then seeking an exit. ‘here have been extensive experiments made with the gold found at the foot of this mountain, and they are considered very satisfactory. You may be sure that old Madison county has been ex- tensively patronized lately by visits from capital- ists, geologists, and innumerable fortune hunters, in the shape of returned Pike’s Peakers; the latter c have, however, returned in disgust, as it ‘es a great outlay of money to erect the necessary works to extract the gold and platinum. A com- pany has formed who have sufficient means at command to work the mines in a manner which must insure success. The platinum, which com- such a high figure in the market, will iteelf remunerate the company handsomely. The honor of first discovering these veins is due to A. or two, we uyamas after C. Koch, of 8t. Louis, who. in company with Several gentiemen of experience in tnining, is stiH engaged in superin ding the workii the mines. eo won beget ee taken a sudden cool turn, is we've through th est time, as this has, bres toon the winter in the recolivctjon of that mythical, — being, the oldest inhabitant.
