—.——_. Mx. Dovotas axp THE RePvBLicaNs.— Our comments upon the recent speech of Mr. Kellogg, Published a day or two since, were written before seeing it in print—upon verbal accounts of it. Since reading it, we find that he has made his case out clearly against both Mr. Douglas and Mr. Greeley ; proving that the latter urged the su; of Mr. D.’s aspirations for reélection to the United States Senate upon the Republican Party, upon the ground that its (the Republican party’s) cause would be much more benefitted by It, than by the election of Mr. Lincoln. Also, that the former— Mr. Douglas—asked for Republican-party support on the ground that, if reelected, he would prove the unfaltering enemy of the Democratic National Administration, and a determined supporter of the Republican party’s cause in the contest of 1860—alleging, at the seme ie, that being a young man, he could afford td postpone his own aspirations for the Presidency. Mr. Kellogg gave the name of the Hon. John Covode, of Pennsylva- nia, as the gentleman with whom Mr. Douglas used that argument. Mr. Covode was not in the House at the moment; and thus was not called on to substantiate the allegation. Nevertheless, it is well known that he stands ready so to do when- ever called on to do so in open session. He is un- derstood to proclaim the fact to all who approach Lim on the subject. So, too, in the case of Mr. Colfax, who sat dumb under the interrogatories of his fellow-members on that occasion. No man here of an ounce of brains doubts that if Senator Douglas loosens his tongue by calling on him to tell all he knows THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON CITY: MONDAY....................March 19, 1860, Spirit ef the Merning Press. . At this time, when true men are so much needed, his death will be regarded as a national calamity. If there be those who wonder at the consistency and persistence of our opposition to the aspira- tions of Senator Douglas to the Democratic Presi- dential nomination, we point them te these facts in the secret history of his wiring in and wiring out during the heated term of his late offen- sive and defensive alliance with the Republican party, well known to us from the time of their occurrence—but not within the reach of our capacity to bring them to the knowiedge of the public Sustained by proofs carrying conviction with them. That proof can now be brought out by the interpellation of Mr. Covode upon the floor of the Hail, and by the act of Senator Douglas in calling on Mr. Colfax to state all he kuows about the Blair atlair. That Mr. D. does not dare to do, however—lest the result may be, that he will not receive a single vote in the Charleston Conven- tion. Persenal. Hon. P. C. Great is the fever here, almost equal to that in Baltimore, where they have in- sisted, like little Oliver, for “more,’’ and the opera company {8 re-engayed there after its six nights in this city. Madame Colson (who appears here to-morrow night) made a great hit in Baltimore, as well as Patti.
