Cisco, United States ‘Treasurer. and not far from the palatial residence of Robert L. Stuart, the rich sugar refiner. Great is the excitement among the Fifth-ave-noodles in consequence. D> To Messrs. Taylor & Maury we are in- debted for two valuable publications—the Harper Brothers’ classical-library edition of “ The Satires of Juvenal, Persins, Sulpicia and Lucilius,” and the handsome reprint, by the same publishers, of Oliphant’s Narrative of Lord Elgin’s Mission to China and Japan. Laurence Oliphant, the author of the last-men- tioned work, was the private secretary of Lord Elgin, and is well known to the reading world as one of the most graphic and clear-headed descrip- tive writers of the day. His narrative furnishes not only a history pf all the noteworthy events of the mission, but affords a budget of highly-inter- esting particulars relative to the Chinese and Japanese, into whose domestic manners, etc., etc., we are enabled to pry, by means of Mr. Oliphant’s lorgnette, in the most satisfactory manner imagin- able. The volume js Ilustrated by over sixty en- gravings, many of them after original Chinese and Japanese drawings. es Personal. +++ Judge Brewer, of Md., is at Willards’. THE Szconp Gen From Vineinta came booming to Washington yesterday afternoon in the shape of authentic news that the Wheeling district had chosen Hunter delegates to the Charleston Con- venrion—another district claimed at the recent State Convention in Richmond as being ceftain to elect Wise delegates. Last night thethird gun came, from the Norfolk district, in which Pro, Wise delegates have been elected. A great desire was manifested night to learn who were yesterday elected to represent the Win- chester district. The Virginia politicians now in Washington swarmed the hotel halls, and ran down all likely, possibly, to have beard from Winchester, for information—but in vain. P.S.—Dispatches from Winchester this morning state that in the tenth electoral district, Messrs. Hoge and Funsten have been appointed delegates, and Messrs. Parsons and Duckwell alternates, to Charleston. All Hunter men. In the fifteenth or Fairmount district, Charles Russell, of Wheeling, and Wm. G. Brown, of Preston, have been appointed delegates to Charles- ton. Both for Hunter. The result in Virginia, so far, 1s as follows: For Wise—Norfolk district, two delegates. For Hunter—Wheeling district, two delegates ; Winchester do., two; Parkersburg do., two. Making six for Hunter, and two for Wise. The Tappahannock district meet on the 20th, and will undoubtedly follow suit by choosing two Hunter delegates with almost unanimity. This isthe district in which Mr Hunter resides, and has acustomof furnishing Presidents to the Union, having already supplied Washington, Madison and Monroe. It begins to look very much as if thisdistrict was going to furnish another President. Another noteworthy fact is that they all make ex- cellent and popular Presidents. =~ Mr. Mervocn axp Mus. GLapstane.—The season of this distinguished actor and actress in the Federal Metropolis, which closes to-night, has been the most remarkable one known to the history of the drama among us; for they have drawn fine houses here for thirty nights—an achievement which no others were ever able to accomplish. Public opinion in Washington has certainly stamped them as being the best actor and actress now on American hoards—a compliment of which they may well be proud, for Washington audi- ences are necessarily composed of a far larger Proportion of persons of critical acumen than any other American audieaces possibly can be; the first minds and the best taste of the nation being assembled here during the sessions of Congress, in far larger proportion than any where else, Strange to say, Mr. Murdoch bas found it impos- sible to obtain an engagement to play in a New York theatre, though no actor has performed his range of characters there in ten y: past at all comparable with him. His American nativity is doubtless at the bottom of the fact; all the New York managers being Englishmen and_prover- Mial for excluding really first class American sctors from their boards, lest if American stars obtain a solid footing in the New York thea- tres their control of the drama there shall depart. Forrest is the only American tragedian they suifer to play there, and they permit him to play only because they cannot help themselves. ge A Setrrrr.—if there be southern men still dis- posed to look kindly upon the idiosyncracy of “squatter sovereignty,”’ we advise them to get “by heart” the late speech of the Hon. Mr. Curry, of Alabama, wherein they will find what Attorney General Black left of it, so completely torn to shreds, as that nought of it really remains. Mr. Curry’s first speech of the session marked him for astatesman of great breadth of intellect, logical mind, close study, and, in these times, alin uf@xampled oratorical acumen. His last effort has certainly confirmed this reputation; earning for him a place in the very front rank of American statesmen of this era, as young and comparative! inexperienced as he is. If he continues in public life for twenty years, he will quit it with fame equal to that achieved by any man whose naine has 8» far graced the annals of the Congress of the United States. — VEATH OF A FURSER iN THE Navy.—A dispatch announcing the death of Purser Samuel Forrest, at Staunton, Va., has been received byja relative of that gentleman in this city. Mr. Forrest was a native of the District of Columbia, but for some time back has resided at Staunton, where his de- cease took place. He was appointed a Purser in the Navy ia October, 1836 = —— Forzicn Coxsvis.—Robert Barth, of St. Louis, has been recognized by the President as Vice Con. sul of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg for Missouri, and als> Consul for the Grand Duchy of Hesse Darmstadt for Missouri, Illinois, and lowa. ———¢ InpIaAN AGENTS APPpoIntep.—Robt.
