Someone may ise up who can tell us why it is that as we are g in intelligence, we seem to be falling » the licentiousness of the dark ages; why is it that while the church is boasting of its millions of heathen converts, we are doing se than the unchristianized cannibal; why tin the very church itself, many of the shining lights—divines, deacons, and sisters— are the ones whose hearts are given over to tand infamy. We need not dwell on the hypocrisy of this man, or this woman, who, when 4 neighboring female was accused of a /tason, she “‘oast the first stone,” and said she would not recognize her in society, even while she was receiving and returning the visits of this wretch in the form of a man, aye, and meeting him in his office. The affair was discovered strangely. The banker's jealousy was uroused by the familiar- ity of a young Englishman. an insurance agent residirg here, with his wife, and in watching for some overt act on their part, caught in com- pany with her his friend. his counsellor, under circumstances which led him to charge his wife with disloyalty to her marriage vows; and she confessed to acts of criminality, not only with the lawyer, but also with the insurance agent, and adistinguished artist well known in this city and in Washington. Th:s confession was acknowledged before a notary public. We have it from govd authority that the banker set his confidential clerk to watch the guilty pair, and one Sunday, while he was sup- posed to be attending to his mission-school du- ties, he, with his clerk, took part in tho watch. The clerk saw the honorable (?) enter the house and saw him enter the raom of the wretehed woman. He told her that he would make such settlement of property as her adopt- ed father thought right. He wrote thus to the person referred to, and subsequently went East to make the necessary settlement. Such are the main facts of a case of the truth of which there is too little reason to doubt. The ingenious attempts of the wily lawyer to cast over the whole an appearance of doubt, and meet it with positive denial, only tell more plainly the departure of every redeeming qual- ity from the heart of this ungrateful being. We are glad that the innocent husband has refused to imbrue his hands in the blood of the villain, and it is rumored that he will seek re- dress in our courts. Be this as it may, a pun- ishment more certain than that which can be meted out by any injured husband or human tribunal awaits this heartless villain.
