The y of nature by means of the “probability” of the moral and intellectual world, is among. the. | most striking and most beautiful of the investiga-" tions of science. From the statistics of insanity, depravity of og bt ing intellect, and moral deform- ity, disease of , mind, and soul, tuese math- ematical formula have Produced laws, which otherwise would have escaped our utmost scru- tiny; and have thus enabled us to detect the causes and apply the remedy. From the theorems of this science, then, in their applications to our race, might be deduced the structure and tendencies of the human mind. fh ALG oe construct the average height of man; lay bear the influences that acted upon him, the motives, impulses, affections, hopes, fears, doubts and aspirations that prompted him toaction. But there was nothing in all the results of this itrange and wondrous science that conflicted in the slight- est degree with the fullest conviction of freedom and responsibility. He would add that the prose- cution of this science had indicated to us that the race-had steadily advanced in truthfulness, in honor, in virtue, and in fortitude. But more than all this, the teachings of this, combined with those of all the other sciences, would show that He himself who inscribed the manifestations of His glory on the face of earth, the sea, flowers, rocks, beasts, waves, fishes, birds. and stirs, was the saine Eternal Creator who had written these laws upon the tablets of man’s heart, and who had implanted the very same harmonious rela- tions in his intellect and thought—so clearly that they might write them in formula, or trace them ii curves. ts s0 large @s to requtre it to be put to press at an sarly hour; Advertisements, therefore, should be sent in before Twelve o'clock, m.; otherwise they may not appear until the next day. © ——+.0e- Notics.—District of Columbia Advertisements to be inserted in the BALTIMORE Sun are recerved at and forwarded from THE Star office.
