MIAN Lecttaxs —Prof. Peirce deliv- ered his second lecture on Comets at the Smith- sonian, last evening, before a large audience. Having in a previous lecture treated of the nebula or tailof the Comet, the main subject on this oc- casion was the nucleus or head of this celestial voyager. It had been held by some, that the nu- cleus was composed of the same nebulous sub- stance es the tail, only in a state of much greater condensation. This theory the lecturer considered, itself, very nebulous; and argued mathematically to show that a nucleus bearing the computed pro- Portion of only two hundred miles in diameter to an atmosphere or nebula of twenty thousand miles, must be at least of the consistency of a metallic substance to support it. His theory—founded on the best telescopic observations and close mathe- matical computations of the known Comets—was, that they consist of a nucleus of some metallic substance, ranging from one hundred to two hun- dred miles in diameter; and that on coming into the solar system, the unusual heat causes an exha- ee 4 bd gst oe lly from the solar of the nucleus, which falls be! a the tail of the full-fledged Comet. ae acres Braxs* Birntu-Day.—Yesterday being the birth y of the Poet.
