Notwithstanding that the fire- men worked unitedly, and with a will to stay the flames, the disadvantages above referred to pre- vented them from rendering effective service, except to save adjoining houses, until the three buildings were entirely consumed save the brick watls; and a large portion of those were of neces- sity pulled down by the hook and ladder company before the burning debris could be effectually extinguished. Mr. Waters’s loss is about $1,000 over and above an insurance of 3600. ‘That of Mr. Walter is esti- inated at 35.000, of which $3,000 is estimated as the cost of his house and the other $3,000 the loss of furniture which was stowed therein. He was not insured to the amount of a dollar. Mr. Einolf estimates bis loss at $3,000, which is partially covered by an insurance of $1,800. As the fire originated in the rear basement room of Walters’s house, which was unoccupied, and was first discovered bursting from a window within convenient reach from the adjoining alley fence, there can be no doubt but that it was the work of an incendiary.
