A trial has taken place aj Tours, in Franee, of mother and daughter named Lemoine, the charge against them being the burning to death of the ly-boru illegitimate child of Mile. Lemoine. e father was the coachman in Madame Lemoine’s service,a young man named Fotis. The court was each day crowded to ex cess, the principal inhabitants of the neighbor j ing country being present, and the Prefect of H the department and the principal functionaries | having seats in court. Mlle. Lemoine is dea : eri asrather below the middle size, with : fine eyes and good color. She was dressed in ; ; black, and at first hid her face with her pocket handkerchief, shedding tears. Madame Le imoine has also, it is said, fine eyes, a high fore- head, regular features, and black hair. The expression of her face is somewhat haughty, wand her bearing lady-like. Sne was hand- somely dressed = peng — Cae hag rr arrapged round her 5 anawer to the ‘usual questions, Madanie Lemoine said, in a somewhat strong voice, that her maiden name was Victoire Mingot, that she is the wife of M. Lemoine, her age 43, and her birth-place and present residence Chinon. Mile. Lemoine, in answer to similar questions, said that her , Christian name is Angelina, her age rather wore than 16, her birthplace Chinon, and her idence with her mother. The details of the case are mostly unfit for publication, but the crime was so great, and the prisoners of such a position in society, that unusual attention to the circumstances has been attracted, and Galignani's Paris Messenger gives the whole of the testimony to its readers. It seems that Mile. Lemoine has heen noted for boldness in her conduct and for her proco- cious taste for novel reading for some years, though only 16 years of age. The coachman asserts that she frequently romped with him, aud finally made improper advances and in- vited him to her chamber, while she maintains 3] that he accomplished his base designs by vio- lence and in acellar. The young lady became pregnant, and was delivered by hs mother in a] alonely chamber in an unfrequented part of the house, whither she had been removed for seerecy. Previous to her confinement her mother advised improper means to procure premature birth, but was unsuccessful. The indictment asserts that the child was born alive, and that Madame Lemoine was so struck cried, “See how big it is!” how she thrust the fi fire in the room, and held it there until it burnt to death. It adds that though she denied that thing only wanted to be allowed to live !”’ wa: interroga’ed. MADAME LEMOINE EXAMINED. I watched over my daughter as it was my «duty to do. I never observed any familiar- ities hetween her and the coachman, Fetis; I with my danghter, when I learned her situa- taken. I first heard the reports in November, they were true, and as no alter: pince in her health [ believed her. “Tell «aid to you after the discharge of Fetis.”’ *+Al- you to say what they were.” ‘It was very appear in the ev.nt of a miscarriage; but for her confinement | would be painful.”” “I insist an your answer- ing.’ “I did what every mother would have done, and mong other things I put a bed in the room."’ --And what happened?” «A dead child was born.”’ --And what did you do with you had condemned it in advance not “Oh, sir! what you now say deprives tt why to live?’” me of the cour: of stating what passed."” When a wou has the courage to the child of ber daughter into the fire she ought to have the courage to state what she did.” «I had the courage to do what was necessary to save the honor of my daughter.”’ The prisoner ufter- wrds, though with great Tepugnance, gave de- tails of the birth, and then said that she was ©mvinced that the child was dead, inasmnch asit did not move. “But often newly-born children do not move, though alive,”’ said the President. *-Ah, that is science, and I am not learned. The child had been lying motionleas sone time beforeI put it inthe fire.” Did You not say to your daughter that the child was alive, and a very large one?’ “I did not say that it was alive, though I may have said that it was large."’ ‘Your daughter says that the child moved—that she saw it move.”” “She could not have seen that, for I am sure that it tid not." “Why did you cast it into the fire?” When I was certain that it was dead, I had the honor of my daughter to protect, and I did not hesitate.””” “How did you light the fire?”’ There was already w in the grate.” “Give us the details of the burning.’ Pe so im my prelimina examina- ‘ion, and it is cruel to ask mae to repeat them."’ “Did the operation last long?" “I cannot tell.”’ “Afterwards you had the cour- — tv cast away the ashes of the burnt child your daughter."’ ‘Yes, I had the courage to do that. Why should I not have had the cour- age to-earry to the end what I had ‘com- menesd?"" ‘And the day after you compelled your daughter to take a walk in the town?” ~-When @ mother desires to save the honor of eH. d wughter, she does everything except © k The eoachman was also examined by the Court. He is described ag unlikely te aosate admiration from most ladies, being ungainly aud unprepossessing. The youn girl fre- f pmpa expressed disgust at him while giving % er testimony. We quote from Galignani. TESTIMONY OF FETIS. Witnesses were then called.
