Atthe hour anuounced for the commencement of the exercises, every available spot where it was possible to see or hear was occupied by eager spectators. Seated on the stage with the ministers of the elty and others we noticed the Hon. Secretary of State and lady. Shortly after 4 o'clock the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, headed by music, and ecorted by the Washington Commandery of Knights Templars, arrived, and took position around the spot selected for the laying of the cor- ner stone After prayer, the usual ceremony of adjusting the stone was performed by the Masons, when the Rev. W. D. Haley proceeded to deliver the Ma- sonic oration usual on such oceasions. After ad- verting to the ceremonies which had been formed, he greeted with appropriate salutation the ladies, the citizens, the church, and the craft Referring to the church be said - «In the specimen of the Gothic, (which had lately become the popular order of architecture) orany of its moditications. the giftof free masonry to the chureb was exhibited. “Go abroad—travel upon the Continent of Europe, and when in Manich. Milan. Prague, or Paris, you view with admiration the loftiest and most heautiful cathe- dral in it, you behold the giftof free masonry to the church. (oto London and stand under the shadow of that stupendous pile known as St. Pan!'s Cathedral; view its lofty dome; see its clond cleaving cross; walk in its Majestic corri- dors; through its transept and aisle; descend into its silent crypt, surrounded as you will be by the sleeping dust of earth's mighty ones, behold rizlht beneath the choir a slab, and upon it, engraved in Latin, the words: ‘ Beneath this lies the builder of this church, who lived above ninety years, not for himself, but for the public good. Reader would’st thou behold his monument? Gaze around.’ That bnilder was Sir Christopher Wren, Grand Master of Ancient Masonry. To the moral service of free masonry to the eburch I have not the, nor would it be proper under cir- cumstances like these to detiin you to speak of them. If I had weeks, instead of minutes, the time would still ne too short. And I have referred to this point not for the purpose of dilating upon it; but vs ly because ate the broad glare ofthe brightest day there are hidden valleys and ob- seure ravinesginto which this illumination never penetrates. so there are up to this time some who believe the church and free masor ry to be an- tagonistic forces. And not lony si was psined—not for masonry. for you can neither add to nor take away from fts glory; but pained for my humanity, pained for my profession. when Lsaw that in one of the otherwise enlightened States a Christian clergyman bad refused Christian burial to one of his flock, because. in accordance with aa ancient custom and at his request, his brother Masons proposed to offer the usual last mark of respect. But time did not permit him to dwell upon this or any other point.”” After addressing a few words to the craft, he concluded by invoking the blessing of the Almigh n the vest concourse that was present. Dr. Gurley then read a list of all the articles iny heart of two verses of the 100th Tustin offered up a most fer- Psalm, the Rev vent prayer. . Mr. Dickson then delivered an interesting ad- dress. in which he comerniatee the pastor and the clureb on the auspicious circumstances which had attended the commencement of the edifice, and trusted that the same success would mark its future course After a few remarks by Dr. Gurley, the exercises were concluded by a benediction. Pick-PockETs at THE Circus —Dax Rice.—The immense crowd that attended the circus last night afforded the light-fingercd gentry an opportunity for successful operation. So far, we have heard of but one person who was operated upon. Mr. King, a builder, went there with $25 in yold coin in his pocket, but came away without it. Te THeatRe.—Those national favorites, Mr. Peter Richings and his genial and accomplished daughter Caroline, were greeted atthe Theatre last night, by a large and fashionable audience— | more bright eyes than usual beaming from the | dress circle. +The Daughter of the Regiment” and “The Little Savage,’ were both admirably performed, not only the’ parts of the stars but of the entire company. While Mr. Richings does not lose any in histrionic power or public favor, Miss Caroline seems to be still in the ascendant. | both in dramatic and musical accomplishment. While her acting is all that can be deslred by the most fastidious, her singing certainly possesses a | sweetness and power that commands appreciation and challenge criticism. It was generally re- marked last night, that her singing was superior to that of Piccolomini. and after enjoving her de- licious rendertng of «Yes we must part,” and “France. I adore thee,” few would be inclined to = the decision. With this engagement of the Richings. we prophecy for the Washington Theatre this week, the largest and most fashion- able honses of the season. To-night the public will be treated to the musical drama of Louise Mueller, the Marseilles Hymn in costume. by Miss Richings, and the after-piece of --Bonnie First W ife.* Dan Rice's great show—atbletes, equestrians, acrobats, elephant, 75-year-old goat, rhinoceros, (alias Bebemoth,) learned mules (kicking up be- hind and before), kangaroo that can jum twenty ot est didn’t), Prof’ Canham and the Keystone an —all performed last night, perhaps before the biggest cirenus andience ever packed under canvas.
