THE EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON CITY: ‘The Constitution indulges in an editorial review Of the Inte card of the Hon. John Minor Botts to al friends, remonstrating against allow- ing divisions to creep into the ranks of the Oppo- his poli sition. ‘The Intelligencer thinks that the argument of un- availability, by which the Democracy have lately sought to retain the cooperation of the old-line Whigs, is about played out, and that the latter, under new combinations, are beginning to again have power and availability of their own. +0 07" The first case of yellow fever at New Or- leans this season, was reported on the 3d inst. ——— The Brownsville (Texas) Flag says the iad fever is fast disappearing from that place. {> The annual exhibition of the Maryland Institute, Baltimore, commenced yesterday (‘Tues- day) evening. I> The Great Eastern is 13} feet longer than ‘was Noah's Ark. and three feet deeper, but not so broad within eight feet. a Accounts received from Louisiana repre- zent the cotton crop in that State as being first rate. The sugar crop is said to be inferior and small. U7 Mr. Cornelius Wood, of New York, has made an aftidavit in which he states that he is the man who pushed John Stryker off the platform at the recent Democratic Convention at Albany. US They had a spicy time yesterday before the Baltimore criminal court on the trial of the steam- boat Express rivte:s charged with committing rape on colored women and stabbing and beating col- ored men on the way to camp meeting. Judge ‘Stump and the counsel on both sides wrangled and “ jawed” like so many b’hoys. I> Threo steamships—the Baltic (of the old Collins line), the Northern Light, and the St. Louis—were to sail for Aspinwall and San Juan, to-day, with passengers for California. Thy were taking passengers at various prices—some, it is stated, 2s low as forty-five dollars for the through trip, including bed and meals. D7 Later accow tueed Tepec I?" The Sons of Malta of New York city are making extensive arrangements for the celebra- tion, on the 11th instant, of «ye ancient festival” of the Seven Cardinals. There is to be a proces- sion (by night) and a variety of other grotesque things, that have never been seen or heard of in Gotham before. The brethren in Brooklyn and Jersey City are to cooperate. New Boox.—We have received from the pub- lishers, through O. E Duffey, 535 Seventh street, (who has the book for sale,) ‘ Letters to an Epis- copalian, on the origin, history aud doctrine of The Book of Common Prayer.” By Augustus Bede. Kelly, Hedian & Piet: Baltimore. As an able controversial work, this book will doubtless challenge considerable attention. I> The following additional dispatch has been received in regard to the Watertown balloonists : Ortawa, C. W., Oct. 3.—Prof. LaMonntain and Mr. Haddock came into Ottawa to-day, hav- ing landed 150 miles north of Ottawa in the great Canadian wilderness. They were brought out by Indian guides in bark canoes. They traveled in their balloon 300 miles, and were up in the aig from four to five hours only. For over four days peor ¢ have been in the wilderness, without food with no means of striking a fire. They were rescued most providentia!!lyv rT a Mr Caaeron, who was hunting timber with Indian guides. I> Another “ town meeting” is to be held in Balti more to-morrow, in pursuance of the follow- ing call : *: The undersigned, citizens of Baltimore, invite their fellow-citizens—merchants, mechanics and Dasiness men, interested in the peace, perity, them, in and reputation of the city—to meet wit! Monument Square, on Thursday, the 6th of Octo- ber, at 4 o'clock p. m., to declare their resolution to support the authority of the Mayor; and their disapproval of certain gross mlsrepresentations of the condition of this city, detrimental to its indus- try, prosperity and character.” 7 The intelligence now received from Vene- zuela is not of an encouraging character. While the Government forces are successful in defeating the Insurgents in every encounter, the insurrec- tion erects its bead at some other and distant point; and so fiercely is the war waged, that all the ordinary sanctities of civilized life are disre- garded. The French Charge had left the coun- try, dismissed for abetting the party of disorder. Trade emained at a stand still. The foreign Consuls and residents were eagerly awaiting the Protection of theic several Governments. The executive was, it is said, supported by the money- ed and Jaw and order men, plenty of volunteers, and the piety of the ladies. A Battimone Jeny.—One day last week, ajory empanelied to try the case of The State agt. Schaf- fer, acriminal case of great importacce, returned ® sealed verdict of * guilty,’ which had been duly agreed upon the previous evening, as was shown by the signatures of all the members of the Panel appended to it. The jury was, however, polled at the request of the prisoner’s counsel, whereupon five of those who liad found the trav- erser “guilty” overnight, declared him “ not guilty” in the morning. The foreman stated that the verdict had been concluded upon withouta dissenting voice, and the change of opinion is ut- terly inexplicable. What is more remarkable, the Judge dismissed the jury without a remark upon its proceedings. on Monday in the States of Georgia, Mississippi, and Florida. “The two former elect Representa- tives in Congress.
