On Saturday night he was driving down Washington street, when his horse became frightened and ran off. On reaching the corner Of Prospect street he made a sudden turn, the vehicle upset, and the occupant was dashed head foremost upon the pavement. He was immedi- ately taken to the City Hospital, and after Lnger- ing for about three hours he breathed his last. I> The St. Louis Democrat of Friday last gives the following account of the sentence of Thornton, for the cold-blooded murder of Mr. Charless, in that city, some months ago : “When the prisoner arose, and was asked if he had anything to say why he should net suffer the fc of his crime, he simply answered + Noth- »’ in a firm voice, and proceeded with the ut- most calmness to refresh himself with a drink of ice water. Tur U.S Misister Goxe to Pexix.—By the following extract from a private letter, written by W. L.G. Smith, Esq., Consul at Shanghae, it appears that Mr. Ward, the American Minister, has proceeded to Pekin. The letter is of a date Tater than any newspaper accounts. After giving an account of the battle between the English and Chinese, Mr. Smith says: “In the meantime the American Minister and suite were aboard the Powhatan. and on the 26th received intelligence that a high Mandarin spe- cially deputed by the Emperor, was waiting to recefve him a few miles off, to escort him to Pekin. The fact that such a fraud has been perpetrated there, goes to show that the Democratic party managers in New York areas corrupt and untrustworthy, quite. as the American party managers in Baltimore, who their permit and encourage rowdies to prevent political opponents by violence from exer- cising their right of suffrage. All such occur- rences are fast bringing reflecting men, in all quarters of the country, to the conclusion that more or less of the cities of the Union rest under a despotism of scoundrelismn quite as objection- able as the despotism of any absolute government in Europe. —e American Covrtssy.— Recent advices from Genoa state that while the U.S. frigate Wabash was lying at that port, a large fire occurred in the city, when her commander, desiring to assist in subduing it, dispatched to the aid of the city a portion of her officers and crew, with the fire engines of that ship. Shortly after the occur- rence, a letter was received by the Commandant of the Wabash from the Vice President of the Royal Chamber of Commerce, attesting their gratitude, as well as of all Genoa, for the im. porta: New Mexican Laxp Craims.—Papers relating to eighteen private land claims in New Mexico» have been received at the General Land Office, and will be submitted to Congress at its next ses- sion.
