Passed off in a most orderly and satisfactory manner. ‘The trial ested about two hours, and during the whole time the re pre streets and vacant spaces were crowded with highly interested spectators. ‘The time consamed in getting to work, from the time the eugine started from the Franklin engine-house, was between twelve and fifteen minutes, during which time the machine was cirawn from the starting point to Seventh street, and back to Tenth, (the e of trial.) At ber arrival at Teath street sufficient steam was made to enable the men to commence operations. As we zo to press, the visiting firemen are per- taking of a superb dinner, set out for them by their entertainers, the Franklin company. At 6 o'clock they leave on their homeward ip, and we trust they are as well pleased with Wash- ington as our citizens are with them. ixramovs Roseery.—On the 7th instant, an old svidier, named Francis Carver, a pensioner, resi- dent at the Soldiers’ Home, came from that inst’- tution to the city, for the purpose of drawing his money. He went to the banking house of Messrs. Riggs & Co., where be received his moi and ere he met with an acquaintance, named Daniel man with a wooden leg, and Barry saw t receive his pay. Having transacted some ess. Carver returned to the Soldiers’ Home, sining until night, started again on retura again to the city, for the purpose of is his father; and when he had approached t» within about a Balf mile of the Park, on Seventh street. he met a man named Hagh — whom he recognized clearly, it being a ‘ht moon- light might; and he also saw ry ing a ort distance off Ragan approached Carver, and asked Lim where he was going—whether he was coming to the city or was returning to the Seldiers’ Home; and without giving Carver time re he strack him a violent blow on the head, w 1 rendered bim prostrate and insensible. While on the ground, Garver was beaten in a most bratal and outrageous manner—hbis skull laid bere with a blow from a stone, and his face bor- ribly mutilated. He lay there, as he supposed. soue minutes before he recovered so far as to cry ont, which be then did, and he saw the two meu. Barry and Ragan, retreating towards the city. Warrants were issued by Jus- tiee Williams against Kagan and Barry, who were looked up and arr by the above-named officers When arrested they fought with des- perate determination, but were overcome and brought into the magistrate’s office, and commit- ted for a further hearing. On Tuesday the far- ther hearing was had by Justice Williams at the Jail, where Mr. Carrington appeared as counsel tor the defendants. Six witnesses were examined, f whom were called for the defence, and tied to a positive alist; but the magistrate re- tying uw the testimony of Carver notwithstand- ing, held them to bail in the sum of $1,500 each, for their appearance at court.
